Dubai Hosts Global AI Leaders at 'Machines Can See 2025' Summit
The event, the largest of its kind in computer vision, is a key platform for innovation, policy, and partnership in artificial intelligence.
Organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence and part of Dubai AI Week, the summit is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It aims to advance collaboration between public and private sectors, align global AI efforts, and promote responsible innovation.
Opening sessions featured a high-level ministerial dialogue titled 'Wanted: AI to Retain and Attract Talent to the Country,' with representatives from the UAE, Malaysia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, and beyond. Discussions focused on national strategies to nurture AI talent and leverage technology for economic and societal benefit.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, highlighted the UAE's commitment to developing transformative AI that enhances governance, well-being, and global competitiveness.
Key announcements included Malaysia's focus on talent and infrastructure, Egypt's expanded AI strategy, and Kazakhstan's launch of Alem.AI and a Digital Nomad Visa. A landmark MoU was also signed between Central Asian innovation hubs and the UAE to support regional start-ups.
Global experts, including leaders from Amazon, DeepMind, Roche, and IBM, explored real-world applications of AI—from personalised media and biopharma innovation to ethical deployment and regulatory frameworks—cementing Dubai's position as a hub for the future of AI.

Jackie Bezos, Jeff Bezos ' mother and one of the first investors in Amazon, died Thursday in Miami. She was 78. Bezos said on social media that his mother had Lewy body dementia, a neurological disorder. In 1995, Jackie Bezos and her husband invested just over $245,000 in Amazon, the online bookstore that her son founded in 1994. It grew to become one of the world's most valuable companies, valued today at almost $2.5 trillion. They were married for nearly 60 years until her death and had two children, Christina and Mark, in addition to Jeff, whom Miguel adopted. At 45, she returned to college, receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology from Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey. Bezos was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2020, the Bezos Family Foundation said in a statement. She was president of the foundation, which she started with her husband in 2000 to provide educational grants. She is survived by her husband, her three children, 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, the family foundation said.

Amazon expands same-day grocery delivery to perishable foods to compete with Instacart, Walmart
Subscribers to Prime service can now receive strawberries, milk, meats and frozen dinners on the same day they order them as the company expands its fast-delivery option to perishable food items, Amazon announced on Wednesday. It is the latest move by Amazon to compete with grocery delivery services offered by Walmart+ and Instacart. Shoppers in more than 1,000 U.S. cities - including Phoenix; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Tampa, Florida - can get ice cream delivered to their doors within hours, while Amazon plans to expand the service to 2,300 cities by the end of the year. The company announced in June that it is investing $4 billion to bring same-day and next-day delivery services to more than 4,000 rural U.S. communities by the end of the year. Previously, Prime subscribers' grocery orders were fulfilled through Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods. Now the additional service will complete orders through its same-day delivery logistics locations. Same-day delivery is free for Prime members, who pay $14.99 monthly or $149 annually, for orders over $25. Walmart's membership service, Walmart+, costs $98 a year and offers same-day delivery in under three hours—with some orders arriving in as little as 30 minutes. As the largest grocery retailer in the United States, most of Walmart's deliveries tend to be dry groceries and perishables. In May, Walmart said it will soon be able to offer delivery within three hours to 95% of the U.S. population, and that faster delivery speeds are helping drive its business. Between February and April, Walmart reported a 91% increase in deliveries under three hours compared with the same period last year. Amazon shoppers "can order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project - and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours," Doug Herrington, chief executive of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said in a press release. E-commerce giant Amazon has struggled in previous years to get shoppers into its physical stores. While the company is focusing on its U.S. grocery experience, it is facing hurdles in the UK with its suppliers, a study by British grocery regulator the Groceries Code Adjudicator found.
