Chebbak Confident as Morocco's Women's Team Gears Up for AFCON 2025
Rabat – Ghizlane Chebbak, the captain of the Moroccan women's national football team, is optimistic about the future of the Lionesses as they prepare for the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
All players are determined to compete with great challenge and ambition to win the continental title for the first time, she said in a recent interview.
Chabbak made the remarks to the press following the Atlas Lionesses' friendly game against Ghana on Friday. The game took place at the Père Jégo Stadium in Casablanca
The friendly match, which saw Morocco beat the Ghanaian national team 1-0, was part of both teams' preparations for the 2025 WAFCON.
'The Ghanaian team is strong, and we wanted to play against tough teams like this to test our real level. Today, thankfully, we managed to win, but it was difficult,' Chebbak said.
Ghana put the Moroccan team in a 'tough situation', the Atlas Lionesses' captain explained, vowing that this is something the team 'needs to work on later.'
But the most important aspect of that game, Chebbak says, is that her team remained focused until the last minute and managed to score the winning goal. 'That is a good point for us. We will keep working to improve our performance in the next match against Haiti,' she added.
The Moroccan women's national team players are determined to shine in the upcoming WAFCON, which will take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26.
The tournament's draw recently placed Morocco in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Moroccan team will be looking to build on their strong performance at the 2022 WAFCON, where the Atlas Lionesses reached the final for the first time ever.
Despite their 2-1 loss to South Africa, it was a historic achievement for the team as they also secured their first-ever qualification for the Women's World Cup in 2023. Tags: Ghizlane ChebbakMorocco women teamWAFCON

Morocco's Women's football team holds strong at 60th in FIFA rankings, third in Africa
The Moroccan women's national football team has maintained its 60th place in the latest FIFA world rankings, released on Thursday, and remains third on the African continent. Following a 1-0 loss to Cameroon and a 3-1 win over Tunisia—both friendly matches—Morocco closes the June rankings with 1,419.63 points, down 8.09 points from the previous update. The Atlas Lionesses continue to rank third in Africa, behind Nigeria (1,623.29 points) and South Africa (1,488.49). They are followed by Cameroon (1,396.20) and Zambia (1,395.35). Egypt, ranked 93rd globally, was the biggest mover in this edition, climbing seven places. At the global level, while the United States remains at the top of the rankings, the competition is tightening. Spain (2nd) and Germany (3rd), both undefeated this quarter, are closing in on the Americans, who suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Brazil (4th, up 4 spots) in April. Brazil's rise is significant—they now sit just outside the top three, a position they haven't held since December 2013. England (5th, down 1) rounds out the top five, just ahead of Sweden (6th). Japan (7th, down 2) and Canada (8th, down 1) slipped after defeats to Brazil and Argentina, respectively. Colombia (18th, up 3) made headlines by defeating South Korea 1-0, earning their first-ever place in the Top 20. Paraguay (45th, up 1) and Venezuela (48th, up 3)—who surprised New Zealand with a 3-1 win—also reached their highest-ever rankings. Central American teams are making strides too: Haiti (50th, up 3) and Puerto Rico (79th, up 2) both achieved their best rankings to date. Elsewhere, Saudi Arabia (165th, up 1) reached its highest position, while Luxembourg (111th, up 6) and Bangladesh (128th, up 5) also made notable progress.

AC Milan Step Up Interest in Lille Youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi
AC Milan are weighing up a move for Lille's teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, with new head coach Massimiliano Allegri understood to be a major admirer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Bouaddi has enjoyed a breakout season in Ligue 1, making 24 appearances in the French top flight and nine more in the Champions League. He grabbed headlines after starting Lille's group-stage win over Real Madrid – on the same day he turned 17. Milan have been monitoring the French-Moroccan for some time, but this summer could finally see the club make a formal approach. Allegri is keen to reshape the midfield, especially with Tijjani Reijnders expected to join Manchester City, and sees Bouaddi as a player with both immediate impact and long-term potential. Sporting director Igli Tare is reportedly preparing to open talks, with Milan hoping to move quickly before other clubs enter the race. Bouaddi has a contract with Lille until 2027, so any deal won't come cheap. The midfielder came through the ranks at AFC Creil before joining Lille's academy in 2021. Since then, he's risen through the system, featured for France at every youth level up to U21, and built a reputation as one of the most promising talents in Europe. Milan see him as a smart investment – someone with composure, technical ability, and the maturity to handle top-level football despite his age. Tags: AC MilanAyyoub Bouaddi
