Marrakech – Moroccan national team coach Tarik Sektioui described Sunday's match against DR Congo as a 'final' ahead of their crucial CHAN 2024 Group A encounter. Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Nairobi on Saturday, Sektioui stressed the decisive nature of the game for both teams.
'We can consider this match as a final. It's very important for us and for DR Congo,' Sektioui said. 'We are fully aware of what's at stake, determined and motivated to win.'
The Atlas Lions will face DR Congo at Nyayo Stadium in what will determine their progression to the next round of the tournament. Sektioui's team currently sits in second place with 6 points from three matches following their 3-1 victory over Zambia.
Sektioui pointed out DR Congo's strengths, noting they possess quick players in transition. 'DR Congo is strong in long balls and set pieces. They also have good headers and fast players. These are their strengths. We must stop them,' he explained.
The coach plans to organize Morocco's gameplay according to their opponent's specific characteristics. 'In this type of competition, there are no weak or strong teams. What makes the difference is what happens on the field and mental and physical preparation,' Sektioui said.
He also mentioned DR Congo's history in the tournament as additional motivation. 'DR Congo has won CHAN twice before, which is one more reason to play good football and control the match,' he stated.
Sektioui's squad has faced challenges with injuries and player availability. 'We lost two very good players with Assal and Mouloua. I hope they recover quickly,' he said. He added that the team lost 11 players after the transfer window and two more to injuries.

Despite these setbacks, Sektioui remains confident. 'We weren't even at 50%, but we compensated with an exemplary mindset and technical qualities. We're growing day by day in the competition.'
The coach insisted on maintaining humility against their opponents. 'If we look down on our opponents, it means we have a 'big head.' We are very modest in our values and way of life. DR Congo is a team that's difficult to beat.'
National team defender Mohamed Moufid echoed his coach's sentiments, saying the players are aware of their responsibility. 'We know the match will be difficult against a compact and aggressive team. We've analyzed their weaknesses and strengths. We'll be ready and will win the three points,' Moufid said.
The victory against Zambia earlier in the tournament boosted the team's confidence. After that match, Sektioui praised his players' mental strength, saying: 'The players were mentally strong and managed the game well to secure this deserved victory.'
For Sektioui and his players, the objective is clear: win against DR Congo to advance to the next round of CHAN 2024. 'This is a decisive match and our primary goal is to reach the second round. We will do everything to be ready, managing the game with heart and intelligence,' Sektioui concluded. Tags: Atlas LionsCHAN 2024Moroccan National Football TeamTarik Sektioui

Morocco Secure CHAN Quarter-Final Spot with Win Over DR Congo

Morocco's home-based national team have reached the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after beating DR Congo 3-1 in their final Group A match. Oussama Lamlioui opened the scoring in the eighth minute after a well-worked move. DR Congo equalised through Japhti Kitambala two minutes before half-time following a defensive blunder. In the second half, coach Tarik Sektioui brought on Khalid Baba, whose impact was immediate. He won a penalty that captain Rabie Hrimat converted in the 70th minute to restore Morocco's lead. Lamlioui added his second and Morocco's third ten minutes later. Two further goals for Morocco in the closing stages were ruled out – one for offside and another after the ball had gone out of play. The result leaves Morocco second in Group A with nine points, behind Kenya who top the group with ten after beating Zambia 1-0. The Atlas Lions will now relocate to face hosts Tanzania next Friday, August 22, at 6:00 pm (GMT+1). Tags: DR CongoMoroccoTanzaniaZambia

Raymond Domenech Says Hakimi Deserves Ballon d'Or More Than Dembélé

Marrakech – Former France national team coach Raymond Domenech has stunned football circles by backing PSG defender Achraf Hakimi for the 2025 Ballon d'Or over teammate Ousmane Dembélé, who has dominated headlines as the presumed frontrunner for months. In a candid interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 73-year-old Domenech declared: 'Let's spice things up a bit: Hakimi,' before delivering his critical assessment: 'Dembélé certainly deserves it, but he only woke up in January, with the match against City.' The former defender, who managed Les Bleus from 2004 to 2010, pinpointed Hakimi's decisive contributions as the difference maker. 'Hakimi, on the other hand, had a solid season. And as a defender, he scored important goals in the Champions League quarter-final, semi-final, and final. That's what Dembélé didn't do,' Domenech asserted. Hakimi's exceptional campaign with Paris Saint-Germain has catapulted him into serious contention for football's most prestigious individual honor. The Moroccan right-back proved instrumental in PSG's European triumph, with his crucial goals in the knockout stages propelling the Parisian club to Champions League glory. This endorsement from Domenech carries particular weight as the former coach played in the same position as Hakimi during his career. It also disrupts the carefully crafted narrative surrounding Dembélé. While Qatar-owned media outlets have mounted an aggressive promotional campaign for the French forward, Hakimi's consistent performances have forced their way into the conversation. Read also: Achraf Hakimi's Ballon d'Or Bid: Why the Moroccan Deserves the Prize? From Doha to Paris, Qatar's media machine has mobilized across Arabic channels and English and French platforms to elevate Dembélé's status in what has evolved beyond a simple player award into a symbolic battle for cultural and media influence. Every highlight, every pass, and every news item has become ammunition in a promotional war aimed at cementing Dembélé among football's immortals. Yet Hakimi's record-breaking season speaks for itself. The 26-year-old defender appeared in 55 matches across all competitions, netting 11 goals and delivering 16 assists. In Ligue 1 alone, he registered four goals and eight assists in 25 appearances. His 27 goal contributions this season shattered the European record for a defender, surpassing the mark set by Dani Alves. Public sentiment appears to be shifting toward the Moroccan star. A recent online poll conducted by L'Equipe reveals Hakimi commanding 38.5% of votes, well ahead of Dembélé's 18.1% and Lamine Yamal's 3.7%. If successful, Hakimi would become the first defender since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 to claim the award, and the first African player since Liberia's George Weah in 1995 to hoist the prestigious trophy. Football experts across Europe and Africa have rallied behind Hakimi's candidacy. Adrien Chantegrelet of Le Parisien had previously called him 'one of the three best players at PSG this season' with 'an impressive regularity' and 'immense influence on the game,' dubbing him 'clearly the most complete right-back in the world.' The Ballon d'Or winner will be announced on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The award is determined by a panel of 100 journalists from top-ranked FIFA nations, based on individual performances, team achievements, and sportsmanship. With nine Paris Saint-Germain players among the 30 nominees, the club's dominant season has garnered widespread recognition. However, Domenech's unexpected endorsement of Hakimi over Dembélé has injected fresh drama into what has become an increasingly heated race for football's ultimate individual accolade.
