USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Everson Griffen in focus Everson Griffen made the jump from USC to the NFL and became a great pro
The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 93 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look back at another great USC defensive lineman, Everson Griffen.
Position: Defensive line
Years played at USC: 2007-2009
Career highlights: A highly-touted recruit out of Arizona, Griffen arrived at USC in 2007. He became an immediate contributor as a true freshman in a loaded front seven that featured the likes of Sedrick Ellis, Lawrence Jackson, Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing, and Clay Matthews III. In three seasons with the Trojans, Griffen recorded 82 tackles and 16 sacks.
After USC: Griffen declared for the 2010 NFL draft, where the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the fourth round. He would go on to play 12 seasons in the league—all but one of which came with Minnesota—earning four Pro Bowl honors. His best statistical season came in 2017, when he recorded 45 tackles, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one pass defended as the Vikings advanced to the NFC Championship Game.
Griffen has openly discussed his struggles with bipolar disorder. Last November, he was arrested for a DWI. He was sentenced to 60 days of house arrest and four years of probation.

Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Joe Milton III earlier this offseason with the hope he could develop and serve as backup for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. Advertisement So far, so good ... as Mike Fisher of reports that the 6-6 second-year prospect with the cannon arm took second-team reps this week at OTAs. As NFL fans know, Milton impressed during his one regular-season appearance with the New England Patriots as a rookie last season. In New England's Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills this past January, Milton completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. "I went in there and did what the play caller and head coach wanted me to do, and that's win the game," Milton said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. It was the last game of the season. I was just going off happy. I went out with a win in my first game ever in the NFL. That's pretty much all I was thinking about, until two months later and boom, I'm here." Advertisement While speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Florida native spoke about 'looking for a fresh start' with the Cowboys after just one season with the Patriots. "It did catch me by surprise," Milton said about the trade. "Was I surprised? Yes. I woke up around 7:00 a.m., woke up to a call and knew I was getting traded. Only thing I did at that moment was thank God. I'm blessed. Coming here was a blessing. I didn't know it was going to be here. My agent said there were multiple teams that called. I didn't know where I was going to end up. I was just thankful to go somewhere." To many in Cowboys Nation, this was less of a surprise, as Dallas' rumored interest was well known. And now that "Bazooka Joe'' is getting to know his way around The Star? He's got four reasons to view the move as a "blessing,'' as he lists 1) the warm weather, 2) an indoor stadium, 3) "It's America's Team!'' and 4) the opportunity to learn from Prescott.
