In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look back at another great USC defensive lineman, Everson Griffen. Position: Defensive line Years played at USC: 2007-2009 Career highlights: A highly-touted recruit out of Arizona, Griffen arrived at USC in 2007. He became an immediate contributor as a true freshman in a loaded front seven that featured the likes of Sedrick Ellis, Lawrence Jackson, Keith Rivers, Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing, and Clay Matthews III. In three seasons with the Trojans, Griffen recorded 82 tackles and 16 sacks. After USC: Griffen declared for the 2010 NFL draft, where the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the fourth round. Texas A&M lands a commitment from Kansas transfer guard
Texas A&M wasted no time responding to Duke Miles' departure, securing a commitment from Kansas transfer guard Rylan Griffen for the 2025 class. Griffen, a 6'6" sharpshooter, spent two seasons at Alabama, where he played a key role in the 2024 Final Four run before transferring to Kansas for his junior season. In his lone year with the Jayhawks, he averaged 6.3 points and 1.4 assists, shooting 33.6% from beyond the arc. Advertisement His breakout season came during his sophomore campaign at Alabama, where he posted 11.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and a 39.2% three-point shooting percentage. A former four-star recruit, Griffen returns to his home state of Texas, where he was ranked as the No. 5 prospect coming out of high school. His elite shooting ability and aggressive defensive play make him a strong fit for Bucky McMillan's fast-paced "Bucky Ball" system, which thrives on high-energy, up-tempo basketball. With Griffen in the mix, Texas A&M continues to reshape its roster under McMillan, aiming to build a competitive squad for SEC play. Former Alabama Four-Star Transfers to SEC Rival
The college basketball transfer portal has been chaotic since the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament, and players from seemingly every team heading to the portal to find their next destination. Among those is former Alabama Crimson Tide guard Rylan Griffen, who spent two years in Tuscaloosa before transferring to the Kansas Jayhawks last year. Advertisement During his lone year at Kansas, Griffen started in 20 of his 33 games, while only averaging 6.3 points per game, almost five less than he averaged in Alabama the year prior. He entered the portal again, and found his way back to the SEC (and his home state), as he has committed to the Texas A&M Aggies, according to Joe Tipton. During the Tide's Final Four run in 2024, Griffen averaged 12.4 points per game off a stunning 48.1% three-point percentage in the NCAA Tournament. After an off year with the Jayhawks, he hopes he can bring back that playmaking magic for the Aggies. Advertisement Texas A&M has put together an incredible transfer portal window, with Griffen being the fifth four-star transfer they have brought in for next season. Combining new head coach Bucky McMillan's impressive transfer portal window with two incoming freshman (one being a four-star guard), the Aggies have another season of promise ahead of them. As one of the more experienced teams last season, they will need to find replacements for their top scorers in Wade Taylor, Zhuric Phelps, and Henry Coleman, and a strong transfer portal window may help them do just that. Former Alabama guard, transfer portal target commits to SEC program After beginning his collegiate career in the conference, former Alabama Crimson Tide guard Rylan Griffen is set to return to the SEC this upcoming college basketball season, but it will however not be in Tuscaloosa. Yes, a potential transfer portal target for Alabama this offseason, Griffen will not be returning to Alabama for the 2025-26 campaign, as the guard announced a commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night. Griffen, who transferred from Alabama to Kansas last offseason, is coming off a year in which he started 20-of-33 games for the Jayhawks to average 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game on 37.2% shooting from the field. The guard also shot 33.6% from three, as well as 67.5% at the free throw line. How many players are on Texas A&M's roster after landing junior guard Rylan Griffen?
How many players are on Texas A&M's roster after landing junior guard Rylan Griffen? New Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan has already exceeded expectations ahead of his first season with the program, bringing in eight commitments from the transfer portal after landing former Alabama and Kansas guard Rylan Griffen, beating out Alabama head coach Nate Oats, who was hoping to reunite with the sharpshooter. Griffen's skillset is borderline elite, and while he only averaged 6.3 points and 1.4 assists, and shot 33.6% from beyond the arc with the Jayhawks, his final season with the Crimson Tide included 11.2 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, and a 39.2% three-point shooting percentage. On Thursday, former Texas Tech forward Federiko Federkio committed to the Aggies after attending Texas A&M's baseball game vs. Lamar on Tuesday, and for those unaware of the Egypt-born big man's play style, the Aggies won't have to worry about rebounding and defensive effort on his end, while his inside game led by making nearly 75% of his shots last season. With the Aggies, Federiko looks like a starter. However, just hours before Griffen's commitment was announced, McMillan lost one of his first portal commitments, former Oklahoma guard Duke Miles, who may have seen the writing on the wall after Griffen entered the picture. With the recent movement, Texas A&M now has nine players on the 2025 roster, but McMillan is not finished adding just yet. Still, it's hard not to be impressed with the talent and experience he and his coaching staff have to work with, ranging from proven star power in Mackenzie Mgbacko to unproven, but potential big men who can stretch the floor in Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson IV. Here is the complete 2025 roster in its current state: 6'0 Guard Jacari Lane 6'2 Guard Jeremiah Green 6'2 Guard Josh Holloway 6'4 Guard Marcus Hill 6'7 Forward Chris McDermott 6'9 Forward Mackenzie Mgbako 6'11 Forward Zach Clemence 6'11 Forward Jamie Vinson IV 6'11 Forward Federiko Federiko Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
