Nagaland cabinet to discuss Centre's directive on creation of frontier territorry: Minister
The development follows the third Tripartite High-Level Committee meeting held on July 23 in New Delhi, attended by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Nagaland government, and representatives of the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO), which has been demanding separate statehood since 2010.
'We have a cabinet meeting tomorrow, and we will discuss the matter there. We shall also discuss with the ENPO leaders tomorrow,' Mr. Patton told reporters here on the sidelines of an official programme.
During the New Delhi meeting, several contentious issues were reportedly resolved, barring a few pending ones from the Nagaland government side, ENPO had said in a statement on July 25.
The Centre subsequently directed the state government to resolve the pending issues within a fortnight, it said.
ENPO, the apex organisation representing eight tribes across six districts – Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator – has been demanding separate statehood since 2010, citing 'decades of neglect in governance and development'.
In April, the organisation had announced a temporary suspension of its statehood demand and agreed to the Centre's proposal for a certain degree of autonomy under the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) framework.

Amritsar: Responding to Rajasthan govt's recent decision to allow Sikh candidates to appear in competitive examinations while wearing their articles of faith, including the 'kada' and 'kirpan', Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Wednesday said the step had been long overdue. The decision followed widespread outrage within the Sikh community after a Gursikh girl, Gurpreet Kaur from Tarn Taran district, was denied entry to a competitive examination for the recruitment of civil judge of Rajasthan high court (Jodhpur) for wearing a kada. Dhami appealed to the chief minister of Rajasthan to make special arrangements for the affected Sikh candidate to be allowed to retake the exam, which she missed due to the misconduct of certain officials. This, he said, would ensure justice is delivered. Dhami also appealed to the Centre to instruct all state govts to uphold the constitutional rights of Sikhs and to take strict measures to prevent such discriminatory practices. He called for clear guidelines to be issued to examination authorities to ensure Sikh candidates are not harassed for wearing their articles of faith during exams. He demanded stern action against officials who violate constitutional provisions and harass Sikh students, so that such incidents do not recur.

OPS to take decision on alliance today
Madurai: Former chief minister O Panneerselvam has said that he would announce his next course of action in the run-up to 2026 assembly elections in Chennai on Thursday. "I will make an announcement on Thursday in Chennai,'' he told reporters at Madurai airport when asked about his decision on alliance for 2026 election. When reporters asked if he was holding a meeting with supporters to decide on the alliance, OPS said everything would be revealed on Thursday. Earlier speaking to reporters outside his residence at Periyakulam in Theni district too, he gave a similar response, maintaining suspense around his next political move. The development comes in the backdrop of recent events that have unsettled OPS's camp. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Tamil Nadu , Panneerselvam's request to meet the PM was turned down. Subsequently, OPS publicly criticised the Centre for not releasing funds under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), indicating a change in his stance towards BJP . His advisor Panruti Ramachandran had said that OPS should walk out of NDA in the wake of the rejection of his plea to meet PM. OPS is likely to meet his supporters before making an announcement to the media in Chennai on whether he would continue in the BJP-led NDA or explore other options ahead of the 2026 polls.

HC seeks Chandigarh administration, Centre's reply on delay in withdrawal of farm stir FIRs
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday asked the central govt and Chandigarh administration to respond to a petition filed by farmers over a delay in the UT sending a no-objection communication to Centre for withdrawal of cases registered during the 2020-2021 farm stir. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The central govt issued a policy in 2021, according to which, upon receiving no-objection from the state, the cases against the farmers registered during the farmer agitation would be withdrawn. Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi issued the notice after hearing a petition filed by Kirpal and other farmers (a total of 28 petitioners), who were booked during the farmers' agitation. The matter has been fixed for Aug 18. The high court was informed that following the farmers' agitation against the three farm laws enacted in 2020, the central govt agreed not only to repeal the laws but also to withdraw all criminal cases and FIRs registered against protesting farmers. Thereafter, a directive dated Dec 9, 2021, was issued by the Government of India, delegating powers to respective state govts to withdraw such FIRs under Section 321 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The court was informed that in pursuance of the Centre's directives, several other states, including Haryana, initiated the withdrawal process. The petitioners, who were booked by UT police Chandigarh during the agitation, also submitted a representation in 2022 to the SSP Chandigarh. According to the plea, the process to withdraw cases against them could not be completed because no-objection communication was not communicated to the Union govt by the UT. The petitioners submitted that even after more than two and half years, the authorities failed to act, and such inaction by the UT amounts to a violation of their fundamental rights including the right to equality under the Constitution.
