Melaka Health Dept drafting proposal to ban vape manufacture and sale
State health, human resources and unity committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said the proposal will be presented to the state executive council for a decision later this year.
"At this stage, the state government has yet to take a position on whether to support or reject the ban, as the matter is still under review,' he said during the Melaka legislative assembly sitting at Seri Negeri on Wednesday (July 23).
Low Chee Leong (PH-Kota Laksamana) wanted to know the state government's stance on the sale of e-cigarettes.
Ngwe explained that while e-cigarettes are often seen as a safer alternative to conventional smoking, their nicotine content still poses addiction risks and health hazards, and they are by no means a hundred percent safe.
He said vape liquids contain various harmful heavy metals, such as nickel, chromium and arsenic, which are all classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and known to cause cancer.
"They also contain cobalt, which is toxic to the lungs, and cadmium, which can damage the kidneys and is also linked to cancer.

MELAKA, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government has stepped up its sugar reduction campaign at eateries in the state after a 2023 health study revealed that at least one out of two people in the state were either overweight or obese. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said based on the findings of the four-year National Health and Morbidity Study (NHMS), the overweight rate of people in the state was 33.3 per cent while the obesity rate was 25.1 per cent, adding that both rates were higher than their national averages. "Melaka is the state with the second highest number of diabetic patients overall, at 20.5 percent, inloving those who knew they had diabetes during the study and those who didn't know they were diabetic during the study but with blood tests indicating that they actually had the disease.

Two Sabah media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@Hawana

One of the recipients, Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, said he was moved by the kind gesture of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who personally visited his home in Kampung Hungab here today to deliver the contribution. 'I feel appreciated, even though I'm just a photographer. Today is my first day back at work, but I'm only doing light duties as I haven't fully recovered,' said Vicky, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in March. He said the initiative also reflected the Madani government's concern for the welfare of those facing hardship, especially media practitioners nationwide. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Sabah State Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor; and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil. Sabah Media journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is still recovering from surgery for a bowel complication and ruptured appendix in June, expressed his heartfelt thanks after receiving the contribution from Nur-ul Afida at his residence in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, last Tuesday. 'Thank you for taking the time to visit and hand over the contribution. It will definitely help with my treatment expenses during my recovery,' he said. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida said media associations in Sabah could reach out to the secretariat of Tabung Kasih@Hawana, managed by Bernama, to provide information on media practitioners facing health issues or hardships. 'I would like to seek the cooperation of media associations in Sabah to share information with us so that we can assist our fellow media practitioners in need,' she said. Meanwhile, Mariah expressed hope that the SJA could serve as a key platform for coordinating aid to media practitioners in need. 'We will suggest the names of those eligible to receive donations and assist in providing the necessary information,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. Malaysian doctor dies while hiking at Italy's Dolomites

(EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian doctor was found dead while hiking at the Dolomites in Italy, with the 60-year-old believed to have fallen from a height. Dr Khaw Bee Ling, a specialist at Metro Specialist Hospital in Sungai Petani, Kedah, was reported missing on July 18 while hiking at Croda del Becco. She was reportedly hiking with a friend when they decided to split up, with Khaw continuing the ascent while her friend turned back, Buletin TV3 reported. At some point, Khaw managed to send a message to her friend saying she was lost and needed help, but she could not be reached after that. Her friend contacted the authorities, who launched a search operation using a helicopter, drones and tracker dogs to look for Khaw. She was found dead in a crevice on July 19.
