How to stand out at your Big Four internship, according to KPMG partners

Summer internships: where ambition and imposter syndrome so often collide.
At KPMG, the tiny fraction of applicants who landed a coveted place on its program are now working to secure a full-time job post-graduation.
A summer internship at a Big Four professional services firm is as competitive as it is prestigious. For most interns, the two-month KPMG internship comes after more than 18 months of applications, networking, and building up their resumé. Just 2,200 of more than 42,000 applicants made the cut this year.
Business Insider asked KPMG partners, including its head of talent, how they should impress in an office of busy people, new AI-enabled ways of working, and tight competition.
Soft skills and good attitudes
"You are in a job interview for the whole internship," Wendy Lewis, managing partner of KPMG's Richmond, Virginia office, told BI at the company's purpose-built Lakehouse in Florida, where around 225 interns gathered in June for four days of inductions and training.
Interns often have a misconception that they only need to be technically impressive, but soft skills are equally important, Lewis said.
She told BI she's interested in whether interns can communicate well, take initiative, and demonstrate their eagerness to learn.
Leaders aren't expecting interns to conduct audits themselves, Lewis added — attitude makes them stand out.
Jason LaRue, KPMG's national talent & culture lead, also emphasized the importance of attitude. LaRue told BI that an intern should be "a great learner."
He said that requires transitioning from classroom learning to an environment where you learn on the job with colleagues. "You have to make that shift from one mindset to the other," he added.

KPMG interns start that transition at the firm's Lakehouse, where they attend training sessions and can unwind with mini-golf and karaoke alongside partners and their peers, before returning to work in KPMG offices around the country.
Be a 'sponge'
"The people who really stand out and are the ones who are sponges. They're looking to be able to build new skills all the time to give themselves that extra advantage," LaRue said.
Becky Sproul, the talent and culture leader for KPMG's audit division, said interns should show curiosity,especially amid rapid change in the industry.
The Big Four are restructuring as they try to recover from a recent slowdown in demand for consulting, while also trying to anticipate how AI will change the world of work and their business models.
Sproul described the industry's rapid pace of change as "the new world order." In that kind of environment, continuous learning and agility are important traits, she said.
Rema Serafi, KPMG's vice chair of tax, said interns should show curiosity about the firm's business model and take advantage of its tech tools. Show that you're "interested in what we do as a business," she said.
She said some Gen Zers now entering the workforce arealready knowledgeable about generative AI and automation.
"Ideas are welcome," Serafi said, adding that she wanted to know how interns thought KPMG could enhance its use of generative AI.
Overcoming impostor syndrome
BI spoke to two KPMG interns at the Lakehouse who said they were worried about impostor syndrome.
"I've talked to interns about this too, not just at KPMG but also my friends interning at other companies, and impostor syndrome comes up a lot," said Andre Gaviola, a 21-year-old audit intern, adding it could feel intimidating to be around so many older, more experienced people.
Evelyn Nunez-Alfaro, a 22-year-old tax intern, told BI that, though she loved stepping outside her comfort zone, she has wondered, "Am I really supposed to be here?"
"Deep down, usually we all feel the same. We're a little nervous, we're a little scared, and don't want to ask the wrong question or seem like we don't know," Nunez-Alfaro said.
LaRue told BI he advised interns to find support figures in their workplace who can coach them through moments of imposter syndrome and sponsor them as they progress in their careers.
At a Q&A at the Lakehouse, one intern asked partners what advice they had for managing impostor syndrome.
Lewis told the interns to build up their self-confidence and realize that they can be themselves and still be successful.
Tell yourself, "I am confident. I can do this. I do belong here," she said.

CPAs Amanda Han and Matthew MacFarland worked alongside real estate investors for years, helping them save on taxes. However, working with investors and actually investing are very different, as the accountants learned the hard way. The California-based couple has built an impressive real estate portfolio that includes rentals and syndication deals outside their CPA day jobs. But, early in their real estate investment careers, a mistake cost them about $100,000 worth of retirement savings. "I think each of us lost like $50,000 in our 401(k)," MacFarland told Business Insider of the failed deal they invested in back in 2008. "We were very prevalent in the industry of people talking about self-directed IRAs and using your retirement accounts, and so we happened to use our retirement accounts to invest in a syndicated real estate deal," he explained. "In retrospect, the timing was horrible." It wasn't just bad timing. Han and MacFarland forewent a critical step: due diligence. Real-estate syndication is a way for a group of investors to pool their capital together and purchase a single property managed by a "syndicator." Once the investor contributes capital, their role in the deal becomes completely passive, as the syndicator is responsible for finding the deal, executing the transaction, and, ultimately, delivering returns to the investors. The hands-off nature of these deals is great for investors with more money than time, but you're putting a lot of trust in the syndicator and depending on their competence. You're investing in both the deal and the person running it. And while a good syndicator can turn a mediocre property into a success, a bad one can ruin a great opportunity — or, drain your retirement savings, in the case of Han and MacFarland. They met the syndicator through a colleague and, "we trusted that he knew what he was doing," said MacFarland. Looking back, they would have spent a lot more time on the vetting process. An easy first step when vetting syndicators is to type their first and last names into Google along with keywords like "fraud," "complaints," or "SEC." You can also talk to investors who have worked with them in the past and ask about their experience. "You might find a lot of things that you didn't know about someone," said Han. Using syndication deals to build wealth passively Han and MacFarland are invested in multiple syndications, which allow them to own a portion of larger properties they wouldn't be able to purchase individually. Between their 16 passive syndication deals, they own condos, apartments, and mobile home parks. Another perk is the distributions, which are payments that investors receive from the income generated by the property. Investors typically get paid quarterly or monthly during the life of the deal, but it all depends on how the deal is structured. "It kind of runs the gamut. You see a lot of different things," explained MacFarland. "But, a typical cash flow deal, you'd expect to start getting quarterly distributions probably after the first year. But some are set up in such a way that they're value-adds, and that it's going to take two to three years to stabilize the property." Having experience with both active and passive real estate investments, "I don't think there's one that's necessarily better than the other," said Han. "It just comes down to your resources: Do you have more time, or do you have more money?" It also depends on your strengths and weaknesses. "We have clients who do their own rentals, and they do super well. They generate much higher returns than any syndication could provide," she said. At Han and MacFarland's current phase in life, passive real estate investments make more sense. "When we first started out, we were cash poor and really looked for properties where we could add forced appreciation by doing things to rehab and improve them," said Han. "But now, we're at a phase where we have young kids and it's just more time-consuming." If the right deal on a rental property came around, they'd still jump on it, but "more of our resources are now for passive investments in larger deals," she added. "Because now, for us, the limitation is not as much funding. It's more so just the time." Plus, they recognize that their main strength is still tax strategy. "We're really good at being tax strategists — that's our specialty — and we know there are people who do real estate investing that are a lot better at it than we are, so it makes sense to leverage their expertise," said MacFarland, adding: "We do our due diligence now."

What investors should be listening for in Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech

Tensions in the market are running high ahead of Jerome Powell's remarks at the Fed's Jackson Hole policy symposium. The Fed chairman is expected to give fresh insight into the central bank's plans for rate cuts. Investors have a lot riding on what Powell says on Friday, as coming rate cuts are thought to be bullish for stocks. However, uncertainty is once again creeping up after a mixed bag of economic data slightly lowered the odds of a cut. The CME FedWatch Tool shows an 85% chance of a cut next month, compared to 99% a week ago. Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management, says told Business Insider that investors should be listening for a few big themes from the Fed chief. Powell's tone Arone says he'll be focused on how Powell could use the platform to signal a potential shift in the central bank's monetary policy, and this should be top of mind for investors tuning in. "I think the biggest thing that investors should be looking for is [the] type of language where Powell suggests that the Fed is moving from moderately restrictive policy to more neutral policy," he told Business Insider. Arone said that he thinks the biggest shift will center around that topic, and that investors should also pay attention to language around the balance of risks in regards to the Fed's dual mandate of lowering inflation and boosting the labor market. "I think that the one from moderately restrictive to more neutral is the key phrase and the balance of risks is another often key signal, suggesting that the balance of risks have moved to a level where it's more appropriate to cut rates," he said. That said, Arone predicted that if Powell signals the possibility of a September rate cut, he will likely remain fairly cagey regarding what will follow in subsequent meetings. Even if interest rate cuts are coming, the market's reaction may be mixed As Arone sees it, Powell will likely use his speech from Jackson Hole to reveal that the policy shift investors have been waiting for is coming. "I believe that he will suggest that it's time to move towards a more neutral target, and that that will likely resume in September," he stated, adding that if he does not, markets will likely tumble. Despite Trump's constant criticism, Arone doesn't think Powell will opt for rate cuts because of political pressure. Instead, he believes that the Fed chairman will continue relying on economic data and monitoring the impact of tariffs on inflation. While Arone also predicted that markets will likely react well to the signal that interest rate cuts are coming, he thinks that the longer-term effect could be more complicated, particularly if Powell opts against providing much detail beyond plans for next month's meeting. "It'll be interesting to see how markets react to that," he said. "They may want more specific guidance on future monetary policy, and I believe that Chairman Powell will be reluctant to give it." Arone added that if Powell doesn't signal a shift toward more rate cuts, he expects a negative reaction, with volatility spiking in the stock market. .

A lot can change in a year — just ask TikTok. Last year, the US government took the extraordinary step of voting to ban the popular app used by millions of Americans, citing national security concerns. On Tuesday, the White House became its latest user. The White House TikTok account launched with a video montage of President Donald Trump narrated by the man himself. "Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation," Trump says over images of him with UFC head Dana White, law enforcement officers, and American workers. "I am your voice!" The account's second post featured various shots of the White House during different seasons. The White House joined the app less than a month before it's set to be banned in the US on September 17 unless it's sold to a US buyer, though that deadline has already been extended several times. "The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible," Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, said in a statement to Business Insider. "President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before." The White House did not respond to questions about whether the divest-or-ban deadline would be extended again or if a deal was expected by the deadline. Lawmakers in April 2024 voted to ban TikTok unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold its American assets. Some officials cited concerns that sensitive data belonging to American users could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, and members of Congress have said it could be used for Chinese Communist Party propaganda. TikTok has said it does not share data with the Chinese government. The TikTok divest-or-ban law, signed by President Joe Biden last year, gave TikTok until January 19 to sell or risk shutting down. The app briefly went dark that day for US-based users before coming back online, with TikTok crediting Trump for its return. The White House has said the president does not want TikTok to go dark and prefers it be sold. Trump has delayed the divest-or-ban deadline three times since taking office in January. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC last month that TikTok will go dark again unless China agrees to a deal that will give Americans control over the app. "We've made the decision. You can't have Chinese control and have something on 100 million American phones," Lutnick said, adding that China's decision would be coming "very soon."
