Megaflash: Longest lightning strike ever recorded spanned 829km

'These new findings highlight important public safety concerns about electrified clouds which can produce flashes which travel extremely large distances and have a major impact on the aviation sector and can spark wildfires,' Celeste Saulo, the secretary general for the World Meteorological Organization, said in a statement about the discovery.
Lightning specialists are calling the episode a 'megaflash', noted for its exceptional duration and size. They can occur in sprawling storm clusters and complexes that have horizontally expansive areas of electric charge.
Most thunderstorms are fewer than 10 miles (16km) tall, so to get a megaflash, you'd need a long or wide thunderstorm complex.

The WMO's committee on weather and climate extremes used data from the GOES 16, 17, 18 and 19 satellites, positioned some 22,236 miles (35,785km) above Earth's surface, to map the origin of the flash.
Each satellite has the ability to sense lightning discharges from above, even if they don't strike the ground.
That data was then merged with ground-based lightning strike data from the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network. It was found that the same ultra-expansive flash also produced 64 bolts that struck the ground.
'The extremes of what lightning is capable of is difficult to study because it pushes the boundaries of what we can practically observe,' said evaluation committee member Michael J. Peterson, a researcher at the Georgia Tech. Adding observations from satellites was the final piece of the puzzle, he noted.
Megaflashes are also known to be long in duration. On June 18, 2020, an enormous bolt spent a total of 17.1 seconds discharging over Uruguay and northern Argentina.
'The duration of this flash was over seven seconds,' Randy Cerveny, a researcher and professor at Arizona State, said in an email.
Megaflash research helps scientists understand how geographically expansive lightning hazards can be, particularly since flashes can evidently travel far distances from the initial region in the cloud containing charge. Scientists have coined a term – 'bolt from the grey'.
'This type of lightning event, a mega flash, typifies the kind of flash that appears to come from 'clear skies,'' Cerveny added.
But, as with all lightning, it 'actually does come from a thunderstorm ... from a very great distance. These mega flashes can travel immense distances from their origin point'.
In its new announcement, the WMO also referenced two other lightning records – both for fatality counts from single strikes.
In 1975, 21 people in Zimbabwe were killed by a bolt as they huddled inside a hut for safety. And in 1994, 469 people were killed in Dronka, Egypt when lighting struck a set of oil tanks, sparking a fire and causing burning oil to flood the town.

‘We Are The Present': Tajik Climate Activist Urges Leaders To Include Youth Voices In Dialogue

29 May 2025 At the end of April, Fariza Dzhobirova attended a Model United Nations Conference on Glaciers' Preservation in Tajikistan's capital, Dushanbe, where she represented Switzerland. For Ms. Dzhobirova, it was a rehearsal of sorts for the actual High-level Conference on Glaciers' Preservation which began on Thursday in Dushanbe. There, she will serve as a panel member representing her own country. 'The [Model UN] conference gave me a platform to raise my voice, collaborate with like-minded peers from across the region and develop policy recommendations that we hope will influence real-world decisions,' she said. The High-level Conference on Glaciers' Preservation, hosted by the Government of Tajikistan and supported by variety of United Nations agencies, will work to underline the extreme urgency of melting glaciers, elevating it as a global climate and development challenge. Will glaciers survive the 21st century? Glaciers, alongside ice sheets, account for over 70 per cent of the world's freshwater resources and are integral to many local economies, providing water, sustaining agriculture and generating energy. However, due to the increasing temperature of the planet, glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates – scientists predict that if the current rate of melting continues, many glaciers will not survive the 21st century. In Tajikistan alone, 30 per cent of glaciers have disappeared over the last century, disrupting local and national water supplies and agricultural patterns. And Slovenia and Venezuela have lost all their glaciers. Just yesterday, one day before the conference was set to begin, a partial glacier collapse in Switzerland buried most of a small village, according to news reports. 'The death of a glacier is more than just the loss of ice,' said World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Celeste Saulo. Youth voices are the present and the future Before the conference, Parviz Boboev from the UN ountry team in Tajikistan sat down with Ms. Dzhobirova to discuss what motivates her climate activism. Parviz Boboev: What inspired you to get involved in the climate movement? Fariza Dzhobirova: Growing up in Tajikistan, where more than 90% of our freshwater comes from glaciers, I've seen how climate change is already impacting people's lives. Rivers are shrinking, water is becoming less accessible, and natural disasters like landslides and floods are affecting more and more communities. I've met a family who lost their home because of mudflow. I saw a teenage girl from that family of the same age as me that had totally different problems because of this climate-related disaster. I was thinking about my classes. She was thinking about how to survive. My message is that young people are not just the future — we are the present, and we are ready to contribute today And I know there are many examples similar to this - farmers whose land can no longer be irrigated and children whose futures are at risk. Seeing this pain and injustice made it impossible for me to stay silent or uninvolved. Participating in the upcoming Glaciers' Preservation conference means a lot to me. It's about raising the voices of people who are often left out of global discussions. For me, it's a chance to speak on behalf of my generation and my country, and to show that young people are ready to be part of the solution. Parviz Boboev: What message do you hope to share at the conference about the impact of climate change on your community and generation? Fariza Dzhobirova: Being invited to speak is a great responsibility for me. It's a chance to represent not only Tajikistan, but the voice of a generation. My message is that young people are not just the future — we are the present, and we are ready to contribute today. Climate change is not only about the environment — it's about how we live, how we work, how we learn. It affects our opportunities, our mental health, our ability to plan for the future. And yet, many young people are still excluded from decision-making processes. At the conference, I want to encourage leaders and policymakers to truly listen not just to the facts and data, but to the experiences and hopes of young people. When you give youth a platform, you don't just invest in their potential — you strengthen the resilience and sustainability of entire communities. Parviz Boboev: Youth voices are becoming increasingly important in global climate conversations. How do you see the role of young people in shaping solutions? Fariza Dzhobirova: I truly believe that young people have a unique role to play in shaping more just, inclusive and forward-looking climate solutions. We bring fresh ideas, the courage to question outdated systems and a strong sense of responsibility for the future. In countries like Tajikistan, where glaciers are directly connected to people's livelihoods, youth are already stepping up. What we need now is more trust and investment in young people. We don't expect to solve everything alone, but we do hope to be included — in dialogue, in decision-making, and in designing real solutions. Protecting glaciers and water resources is not just a technical challenge; it's a human one. By working together — across generations and borders — we can make our region stronger, more resilient, and more united in the face of climate change.

Five-year forecast sees more killer heat, fires and temperature records

Get ready for several years of even more record-breaking heat that pushes Earth to more deadly, fiery and uncomfortable extremes, two of the world's top weather agencies forecast. There's an 80% chance the world will break another annual temperature record in the next five years, and it's even more probable that the world will again exceed the international temperature threshold set 10 years ago, according to a five-year forecast released yesterday by the World Meteorological Organization and the UK Meteorological Office. 'Higher global mean temperatures may sound abstract, but it translates in real life to a higher chance of extreme weather: stronger hurricanes, stronger precipitation, droughts,' said Cornell University climate scientist Natalie Mahowald, who wasn't part of the calculations but said they made sense. 'So higher global mean temperatures translates to more lives lost.' With every tenth of a degree the world warms from human-caused climate change 'we will experience higher frequency and more extreme events (particularly heat waves but also droughts, floods, fires and human-reinforced hurricanes/typhoons)', emailed Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. He was not part of the research. And for the first time there's a chance -- albeit slight -- that before the end of the decade, the world's annual temperature will shoot past the Paris climate accord goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and hit a more alarming 2 degrees Celsius of heating since the mid-1800s, the two agencies said. ADVERTISEMENT There's an 86% chance that one of the next five years will pass 1.5 degrees and a 70% chance that the five years as a whole will average more than that global milestone, they figured. The projections come from more than 200 forecasts using computer simulations run by 10 global centres of scientists. Ten years ago, the same teams figured there was a similar remote chance — about 1% — that one of the upcoming years would exceed that critical 1.5 degree threshold and then it happened last year. This year, a 2-degree Celsius above pre-industrial year enters the equation in a similar manner, something UK Met Office longer term predictions chief Adam Scaife and science scientist Leon Hermanson called 'shocking'. 'It's not something anyone wants to see, but that's what the science is telling us,' Hermanson said. Two degrees of warming is the secondary threshold, the one considered less likely to break, set by the 2015 Paris agreement. Technically, even though 2024 was 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial times, the Paris climate agreement's threshold is for a 20-year time period, so it has not been exceeded. Factoring in the past 10 years and forecasting the next 10 years, the world is now probably about 1.4 degrees Celsius hotter since the mid 1800s, World Meteorological Organization climate services director Chris Hewitt estimated. 'With the next five years forecast to be more than 1.5C warmer than preindustrial levels on average, this will put more people than ever at risk of severe heat waves, bringing more deaths and severe health impacts unless people can be better protected from the effects of heat. Also we can expect more severe wildfires as the hotter atmosphere dries out the landscape,' said Richard Betts, head of climate impacts research at the UK Met Office and a professor at the University of Exeter. Ice in the Arctic — which will continue to warm 3.5 times faster than the rest of the world — will melt and seas will rise faster, Hewitt said. What tends to happen is that global temperatures rise like riding on an escalator, with temporary and natural El Nino weather cycles acting like jumps up or down on that escalator, scientists said. But lately, after each jump from an El Nino, which adds warming to the globe, the planet doesn't go back down much, if at all. 'Record temperatures immediately become the new normal,' said Stanford University climate scientist Rob Jackson.
