Charlie Morton shines on the mound, Dillon Dingler drives in 3, and Tigers rout Twins 7-0
MINNEAPOLIS — Charlie Morton gave up two hits and struck out five over six innings and the Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning of a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Dillon Dingler hit a two-run single in the first, in which the Tigers batted around against Twins starter Pierson Ohl (0-3), who was making his fifth career start. An error by Minnesota second baseman Luke Keaschall led to four unearned runs. The was enough for 41-year-old right-hander Morton (8-10), who bounced back after a rough start against the Angels his last time out. Ohl, who faced Detroit earlier this month, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Four of the seven total runs he surrendered were unearned. Dingler drove in his third run of the game with a double in the third. Javier Báez also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are leading the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored twice for Detroit. The start of Friday's game was delayed 26 minutes due to rain. Keaschall reached base three times, but his error in the first inning helped open the floodgates for the Tigers. It was the second error of his young 17-game MLB career. Friday was Morton's second start of the year in which he did not allow a run. He also put up a zero in a five-inning start against Baltimore in June. RHP Casey Mize (11-4, 3.50 ERA) starts the third game of the series for the Tigers and looks to win his third straight outing. The Twins counter with RHP Zebby Matthews (3-4, 5.11), who beat Detroit in his prior start against the Tigers this season. ___ AP MLB:

UFC 319 loses Battle, cancels tomorrow's fight after early-morning weigh ins disaster
A lot of people were focused on Khamzat Chimaev, which is why matchmakers hired a backup fighter for the UFC 319 main event. Meanwhile, Bryan Battle missed weight by four pounds, yet again, for his middleweight showdown against Nursulton Ruziboev on Sat. night (Aug. 16, 2025) at United Center in Chicago. Needless to say, Ruziboev — who weighed in at 186 pounds — was not happy. 'Instead of talking too much, you need to make the weight first,' Ruziboev wrote on Instagram. 'This a professional sport blondie.' In a move not unlike the old Johny Hendricks days, Battle moved up a division after blowing up the scale at welterweight, though it didn't seem to matter once 'The Butcher' clocked in at 190 pounds. As a result, UFC canceled his fight shortly after today's UFC 319 early (and official) weigh ins. Ruziboev is expected to be paid his 'show' purse. LIVE! Watch UFC 319 PPV On ESPN+ Here! Orioles right-hander Young loses perfect-game bid on infield single in the 8th inning vs Astros
HOUSTON (AP) — Baltimore Orioles right-hander Brandon Young lost his bid for a perfect game against the Houston Astros on Friday night on an infield hit by Ramon Urias with two out in the eighth inning. Urias hit a slow dribbler toward third base side that Young fielded. Young grabbed the ball and threw wildly to first, and the play was ruled a single and an error. Young, who entered the game 0-6 with a 6.70 ERA through the first 10 starts of his MLB, struck out six through eight innings while throwing 93 pitches, 61 for strikes. Baltimore leads Houston 7-0. There have been 24 perfect games in MLB history, the last was thrown by Domingo German of the New York Yankees on June 28, 2023, and the Orioles have never thrown one. A native of Lumberton, Texas, about 100 miles northeast of Houston, Young was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Orioles in 2020. He made his big league debut on April 19. Young had not thrown more than six innings before Friday, and 95 pitches is his career high. The Astros had a perfect game thrown against them by Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants on June 13, 2012. ___ AP MLB: Adam Spolane, The Associated Press
