Orlando: Productive talks with Libya's Attorney General to support judicial reform
In a post on X, ambassador Orlando said the meeting featured a fruitful dialogue on the EU's support for the priorities of the Prosecutor General's Office—particularly in the areas of combating human and fuel smuggling, corruption, and money laundering.
He also highlighted the importance of information sharing with the EU's naval Operation IRINI, especially concerning suspected oil and fuel smuggling operations, as part of joint efforts to tackle transnational organized crime.
The two sides also discussed ways to improve detention conditions in Libyan prisons, review the status of detainees, and ensure respect for standards of justice and human rights.
The meeting emphasized the need to support the justice system—especially juvenile justice—and to create the right conditions for holding free and fair municipal elections across the country. It also stressed the importance of strengthening oversight and accountability institutions as key pillars of the rule of law.
According to the European official's post, both parties expressed their agreement on deepening their effective partnership and continuing close coordination and cooperation in the coming months in a way that serves stability and supports national institutions. UN refugee chief warns of rising migration from Libya amid funding crisis
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has warned of a surge in migration flows from Libya and North Africa to Europe due to severe funding shortages facing the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). In comments to the Financial Times, Grandi said that Sudanese refugees are already moving from Chad into Libya — one of the key transit routes towards Europe. He stressed the urgent need to boost support for host countries to help displaced populations remain in place, which could ease growing pressures on migration corridors. Grandi noted increasing signs that thousands of Sudanese refugees are heading north toward Libya and onward to Europe, instead of staying in Sudan or neighbouring countries such as Chad. He described the current budget cuts affecting UNHCR as 'catastrophic,' warning that the lack of resources is pushing thousands of migrants toward Europe. Grandi urged European capitals to fund existing refugee reception systems in Africa rather than investing in new migration control frameworks. He added that donor-imposed budget reductions are seriously undermining the agency's ability to manage migration flows, calling the international community's neglect of the situation in African nations 'a grave strategic mistake.'
