Actor knocks 'Fantastic 4' hero as 'womanizing' guy, says his portrayal in new film will be different
Film actor Joseph Quinn claims in a new interview that his portrayal of The Human Torch in Marvel's reboot of the "Fantastic Four" franchise will be a departure from the past.
Marvel Studios is working on a reboot of one of the oldest teams of superheroes in the genre. The new version of the series, with an entirely new cast, will be set in a retro-futuristic, alternative-history version of the 1960s.
Entertainment Weekly writer Christian Holub, who got a behind-the-scenes look at the film in production, noted "these classic characters are headed back to the big screen to see if they can inspire the same kind of wonder they did when they debuted in the '60s — and in the process, save not just their fictional world but also the struggling Marvel Cinematic Universe."
One of the actors, Joseph Quinn, who will be playing Johnny Storm, a.k.a. Human Torch, spoke with the magazine about how he hopes to put a new spin on the character.
"Johnny is Marvel's archetype of a 'hothead' teenager, but what exactly that means has been open to interpretation over the years," Holub observed. "In the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four movies, for instance, Chris Evans played the character as a skirt-chasing scallywag. Quinn wanted to do something different."
"He's a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he's funny," Quinn told the magazine. "Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don't think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people's feelings, and hopefully there's a self-awareness about what's driving that attention-seeking behavior."
Holub also wrote about how Sue Storm, better known as the "Invisible Woman" and portrayed by Vanessa Kirby, will have a political aspect to her character.
"Sue has accomplished just as much in the political realm. As head of the Future Foundation (a concept taken from writer Jonathan Hickman's 21st-century Fantastic Four comics, one of the successor stories that is as beloved by fans as Lee and Kirby's originals), she has helped achieve global demilitarization and peace," Holub wrote. "When Shakman and his collaborators say the dreams of the '60s have been made real in this movie, they don't just mean rocketships."

The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, previously told Entertainment Weekly that Seasons 2 and 3 are actually one continuous story but were split into two seasons because of the number of episodes — which is also why the third season is arriving sooner than expected. The first season of Squid Game saw Gi-hun entering the last-man-standing competition, in which the wealthy watch as poor players battle it out in a variety of deadly challenges for a shot at a life-changing cash prize — 456 billion won, which is around $33 million. Gi-hun wins but is forever changed by the cruelty and violence he experienced. He's hellbent on destroying the game — even if that means returning to the arena. In Season 2, Gi-hun reenters the Squid Game in order to take it down from the inside — which, of course, was always going to be easier said than done. Instead of convincing his fellow participants to walk away from the game, or successfully taking down the game makers with his rebellion, the second season ends with Gi-hun having lost nearly everything. His allies are dead, including his best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), who was killed by the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). As the teaser shows, Gi-hun is brought back into the game in a coffin and forced to play a series of new childhood games with a violent twist. Those games include a very dangerous round of jump rope and a maze experience that quickly descends into violence. Naturally, the scenes have a disturbing playful aesthetic that hides their true nature. In a letter to fans, Dong-hyuk wrote, 'Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3.' The creator isn't totally ruling out more Squid Game. Dong-hyuk told IndieWire earlier this month that he already has a potential plan. "I have an idea," he said. "Our next spin-off will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There was like a three-year gap between Season 1 and 2, so I will show what they did for those times." If you're eagerly anticipating more Squid Game, you can check out Netflix's reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, a game show based on the TV series. The show has 456 contestants compete in challenges inspired by the South Korean drama for a cash prize of $4.56 million. (Obviously, no contestants are killed — just kicked off.) And if that's not enough, Netflix also has Squid Game: The Experience, a tourist attraction currently in New York City in which you can compete, too. Unfortunately, there's no cash prize in this one.

Fantastic Four's Reed Richards, The Thing, & More Get a Customized Logo in New Art
New art for the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps shows off some unique logos for each member of Marvel's first family. The new promotional images showcase four separate horizontal logos for the movie. Each one features different designs unique to each member of the family. Reed Richards' logo, for instance, features various equation symbols, while Johnny Storm and The Thing's feature fire and rocks, respectively. Marina Squashes Charli XCX Beef, Says She 'Fully Deserves' Success
According to Marina Diamandis—aka MARINA—Charli XCX has worked it out on the remix in more ways than one. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone ahead of her album PRINCESS OF POWER's release on June 6, the 'Butterfly' singer revealed that any old beef between her and Charli has officially been squashed. When Charli and Lorde worked their complications out on the remix of 'Girl, so confusing' last summer, it struck a chord with Marina. She sent Charli a message on social media and admitted that the 'courageous' track made her cry amid their own falling out, which marked a moment of reconciliation between the artists. 'I think these moments are important. It was sweet to see people respond to that,' Marina told Rolling Stone. 'I love her work and it's so inspiring to see what she did with Brat. She just fully deserves it.' In case you need a refresher, the two Britpop darlings ran Tumblr back in the day thanks to the visual aesthetics brought forth by their True Romance and Electra Heart eras. The artists even toured together during the blogging site's prime in 2013.
