
Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival to honour Laila Eloui - Screens - Arts & Culture
This honour comes in recognition of Eloui's long and distinguished artistic career—one of the most prominent in the history of Egyptian and Arab cinema.
Born in 1962, Laila Eloui has left a significant mark through a wide range of roles—classic, social, romantic, and comedic—delivering performances that have become iconic in Egyptian cinematic memory.
She has starred in nearly 100 films, sharing the screen with many of Egypt's most renowned actors, including Adel Imam, Ahmed Zaki, and Farid Shawky, and working under the direction of dozens of filmmakers, such as Youssef Chahine.
Chahine cast her in Al-Masseer (Destiny, 1997), alongside Nour El-Sherif, Mahmoud Hemeida, and Khaled El Nabawy. The film competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Eloui also starred in his Iskendereya Kaman We Kaman (Alexandria Again and Forever, 1989), again appearing with El-Sherif and Hemeida.
She has also worked with directors Mohamed Khan, Samir Seif, Atef El-Tayeb, Yousry Nasrallah, Ahmed Yehia, Raafat El-Mehy, Kawthar Younis, Ayten Amin, and many others across generations.
A highly versatile actress, Eloui has also appeared in more than 60 television series and 20 theatre productions.
She has served on the juries of several local and international film festivals and has received numerous honours from the cinema industry.
Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival
One of Egypt's oldest film festivals, the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival is an annual event organized by the Egyptian Association for Film Writers and Critics, under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture, Information, and Tourism. It highlights the cultural wealth of the Mediterranean Basin.
The 41st edition will take place from 2 to 6 October under the theme Cinema and Beauty, with broad participation from filmmakers across Egypt and the Mediterranean.
Prominent Egyptian film critic, writer, poet, and journalist Amir Abaza heads this year's edition.

Built on a multi-disciplinary concept, Tones of Paris is an extension of COLORS' new large-scale project to introduce a refreshing spin on traditional music festivals through city-wide curated programs that reflect France's vibrant cultural and musical interests. Last year, Tones of Paris featured regional heavyweights Saint Levant and TIF, who were joined by international superstars like James Blake. This year, COLORS' Tones of Paris will be taking place at the stunning Centquatre. Joining Lella and Zeyne on the lineup is a roster of up-and-coming talents from across the globe, such as French-Gabonese R&B sensation Anaïs Cardot, French indie-rock duo Ibeyi, RUBII, one of the UK's most promising neo-soul artists, Dutch-American multi-instrumentalist Leven Kali, best known for his work on Beyoncé's 'Renaissance', and Sage Faye, hailing from Stockholm. The two-day festival will also feature a series of workshops, talks and exclusive listening sessions, bringing an audio-visual experience and all sorts of communities all weekend. Tickets will go on sale on COLORS' official website this Friday, July 25th, at 11 AM CET and 12 PM Cairo time.

Armenia Unveils Statue Honoring Charles Aznavour, Captured in Striking Photo by Essam Nagi
Ahmed Emam Armenia has unveiled a new statue commemorating the life and legacy of legendary French-Armenian singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour, in a public tribute to his profound influence on music, culture, and Armenian identity. The statue honors Aznavour's extraordinary career, which spanned more than eight decades and earned him global acclaim. A symbol of national pride, the monument has quickly become a point of reflection and admiration. Egyptian filmmaker and photographer Essam Nagi, who lives in Armenia, captured a striking image of the statue that beautifully conveys both the artistic detail and the emotional weight of the tribute. The photo was shared on the Armenian National Committee of Egypt's community page on Facebook, which also extended special thanks to Nagi for donating the image. 'Essam Nagi's lens has captured not just a statue, but the spirit of Aznavour and the deep connection he holds within Armenian hearts,' the page noted. Aznavour, who passed away in 2018, was known not only for his iconic voice and songwriting but also for his lifelong dedication to humanitarian causes and advocacy for Armenia.
