Rams have timetable for Matthew Stafford's recovery from sore back but don't plan to make it public
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Rams have a timetable for quarterback Matthew Stafford's recovery from a sore back, but Los Angeles coach Sean McVay does not plan on making it public to avoid the perception of a possible setback.
Stafford is missing his second straight week of training camp because of an ailment that has been bothering him in recent weeks.
McVay has been steadfast in his optimism that Stafford, 37, won't miss the season opener against Houston on Sept. 7.
'At this point, there is a plan in place. But what I don't want to do is give you guys a date and then, you know, if that does change, then there's assumptions that I would imagine that I would have if I was in your guys' shoes that can lead you to think, 'Oh man, something's really up,'' McVay said Tuesday. 'So we are week to week with him. ... What I don't want to do is set a timetable with you guys, and then, if for whatever reason as we're continuing to gain information, that changes. But what I can say is I feel good about this is the smartest plan for him, and we're very confident that he'll be ready to roll against the Texans, and we'll take it a week at a time.'
Stafford has guided the Rams into the playoffs in three of his four seasons with the team, leading them to a Super Bowl title in their home stadium to cap off his first year in Los Angeles following the 2021 campaign. But the veteran going into his 17th season also missed games in 2022 and 2023 because of injuries, prompting the Rams to add a proven backup in Jimmy Garoppolo before last season.
The presence of Garoppolo, who has started 64 games for New England, San Francisco, Las Vegas and the Rams, is allowing the Rams to continue preparations for the season during camp at Loyola Marymount University as they would have with Stafford running the offense.
McVay described Garoppolo as one of the main reasons the Rams can afford to be patient with Stafford's health.
'There's nobody like Matthew, we know that, but to be able to have somebody that has done all the things that you're mentioning, going into Year 12, played in big games. ... Now we're still able to evaluate the other 10 around him, and we're able to kind of continue on with the installations where that hasn't always been the case with us if we needed to be smart and rest Matthew,' McVay said. 'We'll certainly be really excited when we get No. 9 back out here for us, but in the meantime, I've been really pleased with Jimmy.'

McMenamin: LeBron James is still monitoring the Lakers' moves
Ever since LeBron James opted into the final season of his contract in late June, there has been lots of speculation about his immediate future with the Los Angeles Lakers. That speculation stemmed from a statement his agent, Rich Paul, gave to ESPN that stated, in part, that the two "want to evaluate what's best" for the superstar moving forward. James is 40 years of age and is headed toward his record 23rd season in the NBA. It does appear he will start the new season as a member of the Lakers, but what happens afterward with him is anyone's guess, especially now that the franchise revolves around Luka Doncic, who just agreed to a three-year contract extension. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that James is supportive of Doncic being with the team, but that the four-time MVP is still looking at what the team will do to build a championship-caliber roster (at 10:42). "I'm told that the statement that Rich Paul gave to Shams Charania back in June when LeBron opted in still stands," McMenamin said. "LeBron and his representatives will be monitoring the Lakers' moves that they make, because they recognize that there's only a very limited amount of time left in his career and he wants to be competing for championships, whatever time that is." It has been rumored that James and his camp have been unhappy that the Lakers are now catering to Doncic and not James. However, Charania also reported that James is supportive of this shift. With Doncic now under contract for at least the next three years, Los Angeles can fully shift its focus to building a championship team around both superstars. Once James leaves, there's no telling how long it will take the team to find another star to put alongside Doncic, and therefore, now is the time for it to go for its 18th NBA championship, especially since Doncic made it clear that he wants to get a ring now. Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season.
