First look at new Edinburgh high school with swimming pool and dance studio
The new Currie Community High School has now been completed with students returning for the new academic year.
Edinburgh council have branded the space as a 'state-of-the-art learning and community campus.'
Those behind the building have said the school has been designed with the interest of learners at heart. The school includes a four-court sports hall, a gym hall, fitness suite, dance studio, a Passivhaus four lane swimming pool and a 3G pitch.
The main entrance foyer includes the school library alongside informal social and meeting spaces for the community to use. These facilities include a wellness centre, meeting room and café area which has been included with the aim of providing refreshments for community users in the near future.
Currie Community Hihh has been built to Passivhaus standard, minimising energy consumption and with a green focus in mind. The school also containes two easily accessible large open plan learning plazas on all three floors.

Designed with inclusion of all learners in mind, along with classrooms in an Integrated Support Zone, there is a sensory room and nurture room. Breakout and retreat spaces throughout the school offer pupils choice on where they want to work, socialise or take time out.
Children, Education and Families Convener, Councillor James Dalgleish, said: 'The handover of Currie High School marks a new era for staff and pupils alike, as well as the local community, and it's fantastic to see that the new school building is officially open.

'The new school has been designed with future proofing and sustainability front and centre. The design and landscape was informed and influenced by the school's senior leadership team to ensure that the needs of pupils were prioritised throughout. Alongside this, it was crucial that the building met our sustainability commitments, and it is fantastic that the school is one of the very first Passivhaus secondary schools in Scotland. I am thrilled that the school and wider community will benefit from this fantastic new building both now and well into the future.'

East Lothian mum feels 'abandoned' and 'forgotten' in 'horrible' home

More info An East Lothian mum has described being at her wits end as she feels 'abandoned' in her home. Shannon Stewart, 28, was placed in temporary accommodation in Ormiston before claiming she was 'forced' into an unfit home in Macmerry in November 2024. Shannon said when she moved in she was met with a host issues. She claims the home has a dangerous back garden, a broken driveway, mould in the kitchen, damp on the walls, draughts throughout the house and broken roof tiles. Ina video shared with Edinburgh Live, newspaper appears to have been used to plug draughts, plaster is falling away and old discoloured wallpaper can be seen throughout the property. The mum is pleading with the council to fix the issues so her daughter can play in her garden and live in a suitable home. 'It is horrible,' she said. 'I've not received a duty of care from the council and I feel at times they are trying to force me out into a private rent. 'I'm feeling abandoned and forgotten, they always say ring if you have a problem but they never do anything. It all started when they offered us this place and told us if we did not take it then we would be put to the bottom of the list for housing. 'After moving in I pointed out some glaring problems but my worries were brushed aside. The house was clearly not fit for occupants but we were forced into it in a way. 'When we moved in I pointed out the floors were uneven, and the wallpaper was coming away from the walls from what I suspected to be damp. But the woman showing us around was uninterested. 'Then we saw the back garden which was completely overgrown, there was a wooden structure which was about to collapse and barbed wire along the ground meaning my daughter cannot play in it. 'When I raised the state of the garden the council told me it would take a few months before they could fix it but it has still not been fixed. I was assured it would be resolved by summer but now they are telling me it is a winter job.' Shannon said she is growing weary of the issue with neighbours complaining about her back garden. But the problem does not end there, with both her and her daughter unable to use their front garden due to faulty slabs - one of which she claimed damaged her car which she has been unable to afford to get it fixed. As well as issues with the garden, she claims draughts in the home have also been detected, which the concerned mother alleged have been plugged by 'paper and gaffer tape' by the local authority. 'There was mould in the kitchen which they have just painted over and not treated,' her ex-partner, who has been trying to help with the house, said. 'The house is freezing due to the draughts. 'They have fixed about 80 per cent of the plastering issues but have left the rest for months. Roof tiles keep coming loose in storms which is a hazard as well.' Shannon said she wants the issues to be resolved so she can live in a 'warm' and 'safe' house with her daughter. 'My daughter is a very active three-year-old and now she is stuck inside unable to play in her garden,' Shannon added. 'It is very frustrating as a mother.' "However some matters may involve working with other experts and teams across the council and also with external contractors so some more complicated problems can take time to resolve. We do always try to keep tenants updated and appreciate their understanding if delays do happen.'

Arthur's Seat Edinburgh: Huge gorse fire breaks out as people 'run down hill'

More info A major gorse fire has taken hold of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, with flames seen for miles. Orange flames can be seen from the top of the iconic landmark in the capital, with one eye witness reporting seeing people 'running down the hill' as the blaze 'spreads rapidly'. Video footage from miles away shows smoke billowing into the air shortly before 4pm. A witness told Edinburgh Live: "There is a major wildfire on Arthur's Seat which spreading rapidly. "People are running down the face of the hill to get away from it and smoke is spreading really fast." We'll bring you more information and updates on this breaking news story as we get it.
