BMW hit-and-run: After 5-yr-old child, her uncle, 18, dies of injuries in Noida
Raja, a resident of Sadarpur in Sector 45, was returning home with his brother-in-law Gul Mohammad and five-year-old niece Ayat Khatun after visiting a doctor at the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health (Child PGI), when their Honda Activa was hit head-on by a BMW around 12.20am on Sunday. The impact of the collision dragged the scooter nearly 200 metres, police and eyewitnesses said.
Ayat died on the spot, while Gul Mohammed and Raja were rushed to separate hospitals with serious injuries. Raja sustained multiple fractures in his legs, hands and head, and remained unconscious until he died late Sunday night.
'Doctors told us he fractured his skull and had internal bleeding in the brain. He never regained consciousness,' said his brother Mohammad Masoon Ali.
Ali added, 'We shifted Gul Mohammed to a private hospital in Sector 39 on Monday and have spent ₹3.5 lakh on his treatment so far, without any financial assistance. Now we've been told the accused have already secured bail.'
The BMW, being driven by Yash Sharma, 23, a BBA graduate from Sector 37, had fled the spot after the collision, leaving the injured people behind. Police said Sharma and his co-passenger Abhishek Rawat 22, an MBA student from Sector 70, were found to be in an inebriated state when tracked down. They were both arrested on Sunday and granted bail by a Surajpur court on Monday.
'There is no separate section under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for drunk driving; it is addressed under the Motor Vehicle Act,' said Additional DCP Noida, Sumit Shukla.

Akal Takht summons Punjab minister on Aug 6 for hurting Sikh sentiments
The Akal Takht on Monday asked Punjab cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains to appear before the five Singh Sahiban (high priests) on August 6 for allegedly hurting Sikh sentiments. The Akal Takht on Monday asked Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains to appear before the five Singh Sahiban (high priests) on August 6 for allegedly hurting Sikh sentiments. (HT file photo) Bains has been summoned for organising 'entertainment performances' at a programme held in Srinagar to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur. A meeting of the five Singh Sahiban will be convened at the Akal Takht Sahib Secretariat in Amritsar on August 6 under the leadership of the officiating jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj to deliberate on various Panthic and religious matters, said a statement. Bagicha Singh, who is in-charge of the Akal Takht Secretariat, said an e-mail has been sent to Bains, summoning him to appear before the five Singh Sahiban. He said Jaswant Singh, the director of the language department, Punjab, will be summoned at a later date as he has gone abroad until August 12 for a relative's wedding. Earlier, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) had taken strong objection to the 'entertainment performances' involving singing and dancing at the event organised by the Punjab government's language department in Srinagar last month to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur. The SGPC had condemned the performances, calling it an affront to Sikh religious values. Bains had earlier said that he would appear before the Akal Takht and would be bound to obey every order while accepting moral responsibility. Bains had said that he, as a Sikh minister, seeks forgiveness for whatever happened due to negligence of the organisers, knowingly or unknowingly, at the event.

Mamata Banerjee angered by Delhi police mention of ‘Bangladeshi language', BJP reacts
'Scandalous, insulting, anti‑national, and unconstitutional" is how Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee described an August 3 letter by the Delhi police that called Bengali, or Bangla, a 'Bangladeshi language'. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee at a function in Kolkata.(HT File Photo) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, sharing an image of the letter on X, emphasised that Bengali is sanctified by the Indian Constitution, and the mother tongue of icons like Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The police had purportedly written to Banga Bhawan, West Bengal's state guest house in New Delhi, seeking assistance with translating documents written in 'Bangladeshi language' for eight individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. HT has not independently verified the authenticity of the letter, while police have not yet responded. The image shared by Banerjee showed that the letter, dated July 24, said police needed an interpreter 'proficient in Bangladeshi national language' for documents belonging to the eight persons 'strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India'. TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee demanded an apology from home minister Amit Shah, under whose ministry Delhi Police falls, for the way the letter was written. 'For months now, Bengali-speaking people have been targeted, harassed and detained across BJP-ruled states,' he added, and called the letter 'a shocking escalation' and an attempt to 'undermine Bengali identity' and "equate Indian Bengalis with foreigners'. Reacting to the allegations, Samik Bhattacharya, the West Bengal BJP chief, accused the TMC of resorting to 'fear-mongering tactics' for Indian Bengalis while 'shielding' illegal immigrants. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya reacted, too, accusing Mamata Banerjee of spreading misinformation for 'vote‑bank politics'. He called her X post 'a badly scripted political stunt'. Bengali artists were incensed by the notice too. "Bangla referred to as Bangladeshi language... Exactly the kind of ignorance I expect from the people responsible... Not surprised at all," wrote singer Surojit Chatterjee. "That's not Bangladeshi language… that's Bangla or Bengali," film director Srijit Mukherji posted on X, 'the same language in which your national anthem was originally written and one of the 22 official languages of India.'
