Big 12 football title projections: Kansas State, Arizona State, Texas Tech favorites
Want proof? Arizona State was picked to finish last in the conference last season and ended up winning the Big 12 title and going to the College Football Playoff.
If that's not enough proof for you, here's another nugget: Eight Big 12 teams are given at least a 6% chance to win the conference in ESPN's latest Big 12 projections for the upcoming season.
That's half of the conference (yes, the Big 12 has 16 teams).
Kansas State tops ESPN's projections for the conference, with a 17.1% chance to win the Big 12. Arizona State is second, at 10.1%, followed by BYU (9.7%), Texas Tech (9.7%), Utah (9%), Iowa State (8.5%), TCU (8.4%) and Baylor (6%).
ESPN's Bill Connelly recently wrote of each team's conference title chances: "Eight teams have at least a 6% chance at the Big 12 title, and no one has better than a 1-in-6 chance. And everyone has at least a 1-in-50 chance. Yes. Bring it on."

Byron Leftwich still a 'volunteer' under Deion Sanders at Colorado: What to know
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders introduced Byron Leftwich to his team this week, telling his players that the former NFL quarterback would be part of the team's coaching staff and work with the Buffaloes' quarterbacks. 'This guy knows what he's doing,' Sanders told his team, as documented in a YouTube video posted July 29 by Deion Sanders Jr. 'And he's gonna be an intricate part of our success. I already know that. … So, let's welcome Coach Leftwich.' The team clapped. However, the university confirmed Friday, Aug. 1 that, 'as of right now, Mr. Byron Leftwich is still considered a volunteer with the University," as he was in the spring. This could change in days or weeks if Leftwich officially joins the staff as a paid assistant. The university didn't respond to requests for further comment. In the meantime, it's the second or third time since March that Sanders Sr. has suggested Leftwich has been hired or is on the verge of being hired at Colorado, raising questions about whether Sanders is getting what he wants from the university in terms of staffing. He's at least been having to wait for it. Deion Sanders brought it up at Big 12 media days Sanders previously brought up the subject at a Big 12 Conference media days event July 9, when he indicated he wanted to add Leftwich and former NFL head coach Mike Zimmer to his staff in Boulder but that something was in the way of making it official. After noting his staff already had more than 150 years of combined NFL experience, Sanders said, 'This is without Byron Leftwich, which I'm praying that he does the right thing, and Mike Zimmer." Sanders didn't say who he wanted to do 'the right thing.' It sounded then like he might have been hoping that Leftwich accepted the job. But considering that Leftwich has returned to Boulder and is not yet getting paid by the university, it's also possible Sanders could have been applying public pressure on a decision-maker at CU to do 'the right thing,' meaning fund and approve the hiring of Leftwich. Colorado is getting a great deal with Leftwich working for free. He previously helped lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in February 2021 as the team's offensive coordinator. The New England Patriots also interviewed him for their head coach vacancy in January. Leftwich, 45, declined comment when contacted by USA TODAY Sports July 11. The university confirmed in July that Zimmer isn't on the Colorado staff. Other previous comments by Deion Sanders In March, Sanders said more notable staff hirings were on the way. 'We have a couple more huge moves we'll probably make this week, maybe one next week that you're gonna really appreciate the understanding of how wonderful this staff is,' Sanders said March 17. Two days later, on March 19, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that 'Leftwich is back in coaching as he is joining Deion Sanders' staff at Colorado.' At the time, Schultz was a client of the same talent agency that works with Sanders, SMAC Entertainment. But no big staff moves were announced after that. Leftwich wasn't officially hired. He was spotted at Colorado wearing school gear in March. In response to questions about it, the school said then that Leftwich was a volunteer. Also in March, Sanders made a cryptic remark about money on a show called "The Morning Run." 'These people better go and get my money and stop playing," he said. He then quickly said 'bye, bye' before exiting the show. It's not clear what he was talking about then, but it could have been about pay for his staff. Sanders also got a new five-year contract after that worth more than $10 million annually, nearly double his previous annual pay. Bigger staff and new costs Despite any holdup with Leftwich, Colorado still has expanded its football staff under Sanders, including the addition of two former Dallas Cowboys players to coach its offensive line – Andre Gurode and George Hegamin. Meanwhile, Colorado's athletic department is facing the same financial challenges as other major colleges after a judge recently approved a legal settlement that allows schools to pay players up to $20.5 million for their names, images and likenesses (NIL). That's a whole new cost to add to the budget, starting July 1. The Buffaloes began preseason practice this week and will open the season at home against Georgia Tech Aug. 29. 49ers starting offensive lineman predicts that he'll make the Pro Bowl in 2025
While the San Francisco 49ers have a few jobs up for grabs in training camp ahead of their 2025 campaign, one player who's set in his spot is right tackle Colton McKivitz. McKivitz, 28, was San Francisco's fifth-round pick (No. 153 overall) in the 2020 NFL draft after a five-year collegiate career at West Virginia, where he earned All-Big 12 and All-American honors as a senior. After he spent most of his rookie season as a backup and most of the following year on the practice squad, McKivitz eventually took over as the team's starting right tackle in 2023 and has started all 34 games over the last two seasons. As he prepares to enter his third season in the role, McKivitz believes he'll be recognized as one of the top players at his position in the NFL in 2025. 'I'm going to be a Pro Bowler this year, I've told countless people," McKivitz shared with NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco earlier this week. "I'm just putting it out there just because that's going to hold me accountable and get me to where I want to go. If you don't fight for it, you won't get it.' The 49ers are no strangers to having one of their starting tackles make the Pro Bowl, as left tackle Trent Williams made it four straight seasons from 2020-23. However, McKivitz will really have to play great in 2025 to unseat Philadelphia's Lane Johnson, who's made the Pro Bowl each of the last three seasons and has made six in his career. Interestingly, the San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado reported that McKivitiz had the "most impressive offensive/defensive lineman one-on-one rep of the day" on Friday, as he completely shut down a pass rush from Nick Bosa. Jake Retzlaff still loves BYU but expresses faith in his fresh start at Tulane
NEW ORLEANS -- Jake Retzlaff is embracing some new nicknames. 'BYJew' is an endearment of the past. Now, 'Kosher Cannon,' 'Shabbat Shotgun' and 'Bayou Jew' are among the monikers mentioned by the sizeable Jewish community at Retzlaff's new school, Tulane. It's a fresh start for Retzlaff, but one the former BYU quarterback wasn't necessarily seeking until May, when he was named in a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit. Retzlaff maintains that he loved playing for the Cougars, despite being one of very few Jews on BYU's predominantly Mormon campus in Provo, Utah. 'BYU was an amazing place. It made me into an amazing human being. I feel like it helped me grow in so many ways on and especially off the field,' Retzlaff said, wearing a Star of David on a chain around his neck. 'It helped me connect stronger with my faith than I did before, because I was in a place where it was so faith-oriented that it was just right in front of you.' Retzlaff went 11-2 as a starter for a 2024 BYU team that finished the season at No. 13 in the final AP Top 25 Poll. His decision to withdraw came while he reportedly faced a suspension for acknowledging what he described as a consensual sexual relationship while defending himself against the lawsuit. The university's honor code requires students to abstain from premarital sex. Speaking on Friday for the first time since arriving at Tulane about a week ago, Retzlaff declined to address the factors that led him to leave BYU, where he spent the past two years. 'I'm just worried about where my feet are," Retzlaff said. "I'm just worried about this next chapter, being at Tulane, winning football games.' Tulane coach Jon Sumrall said the university's administration vetted Retzlaff before clearing the way for Sumrall to bring him to the Green Wave, where he'll now have to outperform three other transfer QBs — Kadin Semonza from Ball State, Donovan Leary from Illinois and Brendan Sullivan from Iowa — to win the starting job. 'I was very transparent with the guys in the (quarterback) room. I was also very up front with Jake,' Sumrall said. 'None of them were promised anything in regards to who's going to start.' Retzlaff said he had other offers, but remembered fondly his recruitment by the then-coach of Troy in 2023 — Sumrall. Retzlaff recalled telling his father, Steve, that he could envision playing for Sumrall one day. 'I knew he's a guy I want to be around,' Retzlaff said. Tulane didn't have a scholarship available for Ratzlaff, but the 22-year-old graduate transfer said that being a walk-on suits him because he plays with a chip on his shoulder and doesn't want to be short-sighted about money at the expense of setting himself up for long-term success. 'I know that I'm going to get what I deserve, hopefully, at the next level," Retzlaff said. "If that means sacrificing a little bit of money on my side (now) .. so what? Let's go win football games.' First, he has to learn a new offense, which he said has meant a lot of late nights. He also is working to acclimatize himself to oppressively hot, heavy air of swampy south Louisiana in the summer, even wearing a sweat absorbent wrist band on his throwing arm for the first time. 'I'm soaked right now,' he said after practice, contrasting his new home to the cooler, mountainous, semi-arid Salt Lake area. 'I haven't sweat this much in my life.' One adjustment he won't mind is being on a campus where around 40% of students are Jewish. 'It's a cool deal. It's so opposite" from BYU, Retzlaff said. 'My faith is super important to me. So, that fact just made it that much sweeter to come here." He said he's felt welcome in the locker room as well. 'The guys have been nothing but great to me — every guy on the team and especially the quarterback room,' Retzlaff said, noting that he has tried to eat each meal of each day with different players in an effort to get to know them better. Whoever plays quarterback for Tulane will do so for a team that has appeared in three straight American Conference title games, but also had a lot of turnover after last season — including the loss of one-year starter Darian Mensah to Duke in the transfer portal. Sumrall not only isn't projecting Mensah's replacement, but said he might play two quarterbacks in the Green Wave's season opener against Northwestern in New Orleans on Aug. 30. 'No matter what, this is a new chapter in my life,' Retzlaff said. "I'm excited to attack it and make the most of it.'
