'There is no need to fire Nabi, blame players'

Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mabedi has urged the club to keep Nasreddine Nabi for next season.
The Tunisian coach has struggled to get Amakhosi to the top this season, having just won eight league matches. He can still end the season on a high if he guides his team to the Nedbank Cup triumph next month. Chiefs play archrivals Orlando Pirates in the final next month at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Mabedi believes Nabi has improved Kaizer Chiefs this season despite the lack of results.
'Yes, the results are not looking good at the moment. And it's true, any team is judged by its results, but from where I am standing, the team has improved under coach Nabi. Look at the chances they have been creating, though they can't convert,' he told SNL24.
The Kaizer Chiefs legend feels the club would start over again if they sack Nabi at the end of the season. He feels the Tunisian tactician has done his job and it was now up to the players to deliver.
'If you change the coach now, things have to start all over again, which won't be good. That's why I am saying Chiefs should keep Nabi. There is no need to fire him.
'You know, as a coach, Nabi can only do so much. The rest is up to the players to do their job on the field of play.
'The coach does his work at training and in the dressing room, but in the field of play, it's up to the players, and I think they haven't been 100 percent perfect so far. They need to work on that and keep the coach,' Mabedi said.
Chiefs have not tasted success in 10 years and Nabi has an opportunity to change that in the final of the Nedbank Cup.

Expect fit and fast Springboks on Saturday

After the conclusion of the July Incoming Series, the Springbok coaches changed some of their preparation plans and called the squad in for an extra week of training and conditioning work. It was perhaps an indication that Rassie Erasmus and his assistants weren't entirely satisfied with what they had seen during the start of the season, and by all accounts, they have really ramped up the intensity during the latest training sessions. Jesse Kriel, renowned as one of the fittest and most well-conditioned Springboks in the team, highlighted just how much focus has been placed on bringing a Test match feel to practice sessions. 'We have very high standards in this environment and there is also good competition in each position, so we spent the last few weeks working on our conditioning and match detail, and we are confident about our level of our preparation going into the game,' said Kriel. 'For us it's about how you pitch up at training every day, and we are excited about the match.' With Grant Williams and Manie Libbok paired at halfback, and Kurt-Lee Arendse, Edwill van de Merwe and Aphelele Fassi in the back three, there is a real sense that the Springboks will be looking to deploy a high-paced attack. 'We weren't happy with our effort in the first Test against Italy, and we also conceded maul tries against Italy and Georgia,' assistant coach Jerry Flannery said. 'We've invested time into our maul defence. Across the four games – including the Barbarians – we conceded 40 points, but performances varied. 'We've also tried to replicate Australia's intensity in training.' The match kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport. 'Underappreciated' Orlando Pirates player wanted in North Africa

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is a wanted man in North Africa, it appears. The 28-year-old is just six goals shy of breaking the club's all-time goalscorer but could miss out if he decides to leave. He hasn't had much game time under the new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, with Boitumelo Radiopane preferred as the main striker. Mabasa's agent Gary Cassisa has revealed that Moroccan outfit Mas Fez are interested in the Bafana Bafana forward. 'Yes, there has been interest from Mas Fez, but Tshegofatso Mabasa remains committed to Orlando Pirates only,' Cassisa told Soccer Laduma. 'He is closing in on the club's all-time leading goalscorer record and would like to make history with the Soweto giants.' Last season, Mabasa scored seven goals in 25 league matches for the Buccaneers. The season before, the 28-year-old attacker netted 16 goals to win the PSL golden boot for the first time. With the record just a few goals away, it appears that Mabasa might stay another season and fight for his place in the starting eleven.
