The programme, aimed at long-term, community-driven engagement, is set to begin this month as schools reopen after summer break. Each mentor will 'adopt' a school and regularly interact with students, offering guidance, motivation, and exposure to diverse career paths.
Among the mentors are key officials of the UT administration, including acting UT director general of police Pushpendra Kumar, deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav, and home secretary Mandeep Singh Brar, who have each been assigned schools.
Prominent academicians like Panjab University registrar YP Verma, Nandita Shukla Singh (department of education, PU), and faculty members from institutions like IISER and NIPER, Mohali, will also serve as mentors. In the medical field, several experts from the departments of community medicine and psychiatry have been included, with PGIMER director Dr Vivek Lal mentoring Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Dhanas.
The programme also brings on board leading entrepreneurs, including Taranjeet Singh Bamra, chairperson of CII Chandigarh, former CII chairpersons Sarvjeet Virk, SPS Grewal, and Manish Gupta, and Bharti Sood, regional director, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Educationist Dr Madhu Chitkara and entrepreneur Naveen Manglani are also among the mentors.
Explaining the structure, UT director of school education Harsuhinderpal Singh Brar, who himself is mentoring GMSSS Dhanas, said, 'The initiative is designed for sustained, monthly engagement. Mentors are expected to visit schools at least once a month, interact with students, attend parent-teacher meetings and serve as role models. Their role is non-administrative, focused solely on guidance, support, and inspiration.'
Mentors' names and photographs will be displayed in the respective schools to signify their association.
'Currently this scheme is for senior secondary schools only but we are looking to expand it to all schools. We will also rope in more mentors looking at the response from the first phase of this scheme,' Brar said.

KAU-ABI opens Common Incubation Centre, launches farm exports to GCC

Kerala Agricultural University's (KAU) Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) has set a new benchmark with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Common Incubation Centre and the flag-off of the country's first international agri export from a university-based agribusiness Incubator. The facility, established under the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India, was inaugurated on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) by P. Rajeeve, Minister for Law, Industries & Coir, and presided over by K. Rajan, Minister for Revenue. Equipped with modern processing lines for Kerala's traditional spices, rice, coconut, millets and fruits and vegetables, the new facility also houses laboratories for product quality analysis. It is designed to support entrepreneurs, start-ups, farmers, and students in developing, processing, and scaling value-added agricultural products. Highlighting the broader vision, Mr. Rajan said, 'The presence of such a business park and environment will enhance the entrepreneurial spirit of indigenous start-ups. The facility will also boost the processing and export of Kerala's local products.' Met PMFME targets In his inaugural address, Mr. Rajeeve said Kerala is among the few States to have met the PMFME scheme's expected targets. The programme is implemented in Kerala by the Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-BIP) under the Department of Industries & Commerce, in partnership with KAU, with Centre–State funding shared in a 60:40 ratio. He added that the State government's upcoming plan to establish food parks in collaboration with universities will create further opportunities for innovation and growth in food processing. B. Ashok, Vice-Chancellor and Agricultural Production Commissioner of Kerala, said, 'Such common incubation facilities give entrepreneurs the space to test their ideas, gain market confidence, and connect with global buyers. This is a prime example of academia driving innovation, enterprise, and export growth.' K.N. Anith, director of research at KAU, stated that the Common Incubation Centre is poised to become a model for other States by integrating academic expertise with industrial infrastructure, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), to boost value addition in the agri-food sector. The inaugural export – executed by M/s. Nouka Enterprises – features fruit-based beverages, cookies, honey-based products and ready-to-drink and ready-to-serve produce, bound for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This is the first time in India that products manufactured using an agri business incubator's facilities within a university have entered the export market, according to KAU sources. 'The facility's processing lines for coconut, spices, rice, fruits, vegetables, and millets, combined with advanced quality-control laboratories, are now fully operational and ready to support both domestic and export-focused enterprises,' said K.P. Sudheer, principal investigator, PMFME.

Transformer sales to cross ₹40,000 crore by FY26 on T&D push: Report

New Delhi: Sales in India's domestic electric transformer industry are projected to rise 10-11% annually through next fiscal, taking the market size beyond ₹40,000 crore from an estimated ₹33,000 crore in FY25, CRISIL Ratings said on Tuesday. The growth will be driven by significant investments in transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure to meet the sharp rise in electricity demand, as installed generation capacity is expected to increase from 485 GW to 570-580 GW, while peak demand is likely to jump over 20 per cent to 296 GW in the same period. The National Electricity Plan (NEP) has targeted a 776,330 MVA increase in transformer capacity to 1,847,280 MVA by FY27, of which only 30% has been achieved till FY25, indicating the need for accelerated investments. 'The strong pipeline in power T&D is creating a revenue opportunity of ₹70,000-75,000 crore for the transformer sector through this and the next fiscal,' said Rahul Guha, senior director, CRISIL Ratings. 'Order books will swell to more than a year's sales from the current nine months, ensuring high sales visibility.' CRISIL noted that capacity utilisation will climb above 80%, pushing up working capital requirements and capex, estimated at ₹200 crore by next fiscal. Companies are expected to take on additional debt to fund this, but credit profiles should remain stable due to healthy balance sheets and rising cash flows. Replacement demand will also contribute, as units installed during 2000-05 reach the end of their average 25-year life. Operating margins are projected to hold at 8-10% with no aggressive bidding expected. 'Despite higher debt levels, our rated portfolio's gearing and interest coverage ratio will likely remain stable at 0.6x and 4x respectively through next fiscal,' said Nitin Kansal, director, CRISIL Ratings. However, the agency flagged timely payments, pace of order awards, and bidding aggression as key factors to watch.
