Giles Richards is in Melbourne for this year's race and his piece on the unapologetically dominant world champion is well worth a read. Share
Born in Melbourne and growing up in the suburb of Brighton – meaning he would have been able to hear the F1 cars rolling around Albert Park from his house – Piastri logged the fastest time of any driver in FP3 earlier today, logging a time of 1:15.921.
That was 0.039 seconds clear of next best George Russell in his Mercedes, while Verstappen was 0.081 back.
The Maclaren's widely recognised across the grid of coming into the season with some great speed, Lando Norris also looked on pace to set one of the quickest laps but ran into some traffic, holding up what was being projected as one of the quickest times. Share
Hello everyone and welcome to the Guardian's live coverage of the first qualifying session of the 2025 Formula One World Championship season, coming your way from the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia.
My name is Joey Lynch and I'll be taking you through all the action from Down Under as we look to see who has the pace to place themselves atop the grid for the season's first race tomorrow.
Yet again, Max Verstappen is the hunted; the Dutchman guiding his Red Bull to a fourth world title last season to vault himself further into the pantheon of the sport's all-time greats.
Will be the season in which the crown begins to weigh heavy on his shoulders? Or tyres, perhaps? There's a hungry pack chasing him and eager to send a strong message in the first race of the season in Melbourne, led by local-hope Oscar Piastri in his McLaren. Share

Wayne Rooney urges Man Utd to sign two players before transfer deadline

Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to sign two players before the transfer window closes and says Ruben Amorim would be 'crazy' not to pursue Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Red Devils have spent just under £200m so far this summer, bolstering Amorim's squad with the additions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. While they were beaten 1-0, there were signs of improvement in United's opening-day performance against Arsenal, in which the visitors benefitted from a mistake from back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Andre Onana was Amorim's No. 1 last season and the United boss confirmed his absence against Arsenal was a tactical decision rather than enforced by an injury. Despite appearing to have reservations about Onana and watching Bayindir let the team down, Amorim insisted he was happy with his goalkeeping options and suggested United would not be entering the transfer market for a new shot-stopper. But club legend Rooney believes the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford is an 'issue' and says it would be 'crazy' for Manchester United not to pursue a deal for Donnarumma. The Champions League and European Championship winner is searching for a new club after being banished by PSG boss Luis Enrique despite his incredible form last season. Donnarumma is open to a move to the Premier League but United have indicated they are not in the race to secure his signature. 'There's the goalkeeper situation and I'm sure every Man United fan is asking the same question,' Rooney said on his BBC podcast. 'For me, Donnarumma is out there and if there's a possibility you can get him, you have to go for him. Clearly that [the goalkeeper] is an issue. 'I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal. I don't think there was 100 per cent trust from the defenders in front of those two goalkeepers. 'But the minute [Edwin] Van der Sar came in and calmed everything down, the defenders trusted him a lot more and you see a better output of performance. 'These United players want that confidence and trust in the goal behind them and I just don't see that with the ones we've got at the moment. 'With Donnarumma, he's 26 and one of the best keepers in the world. It would be crazy if Manchester United didn't go for him. 'If the deal can be done and what Donnarumma wants [in terms of a salary] is another question but I'd certainly be asking the question and try to get him to the club. 'So you hope if they don't sign a new goalkeeper he can get back to that level of form, but he certainly didn't fill us with confidence last season.' While Manchester United are not currently planning to sign a new goalkeeper, they have shown interest in bringing a new midfielder to Old Trafford. Brighton's Carlos Baleba is a top target and United have also been linked with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, though neither will come cheap. Asked if he would be 'crying out' for a new midfielder if he was Amorim, Rooney said: 'You would be, yeah, but obviously we don't know what the situation is with PSR. 'But to get a midfielder and a goalkeeper is a priority, if they can address that before the window closes they will be in an okay place.' Rooney also insisted he took 'many positives' from Manchester United's defeat to Arsenal and felt it was a sign the team are 'on the right track' under Amorim. Amorim's job will be under threat if United do not show significant improvement this season after they finished just 15th in the Premier League last season. More Trending 'I think there were so many positives for Manchester United throughout the game,' former captain Rooney added. 'The players will be disappointed to lose but for the fans there were positives to take. 'It's not going to completely change in one transfer window, it's going to take a bit more time, but it looks like they're on the right track now.' Amorim's side return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. Rodrigo Muniz scored an injury-time equaliser as Fulham drew 1-1 with Brighton in their opening game. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Ferrari chief tells 'extreme' Lewis Hamilton to 'stay calm' as he warns the 40-year-old his public outbursts 'only make things worse'

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has urged Lewis Hamilton to keep his head amid a difficult start to his time at the Scuderia. Hamilton, 40, has been told to 'stay calm' by Vasseur, 57, with the Frenchman saying that his public outbursts 'only make things worse' for the team. The Brit has endured a tough first half of the season since signing for Ferrari after leaving Mercedes - where he won six of his seven Drivers' Championships. However, in the red of the Prancing Horse, he has struggled to replicate such form, failing to even notch a podium with a best finish of fourth place on three occasions. This has resulted in him frequently venting his frustration in public following a string of below-par results. In turn, that appears to have now irked team principal Vasseur, who has spoken out on the issue. He told German publication Auto Motor und Sport: 'Stay calm. 'Build on the fact that he has already taken the first step. Don't let things like what happened in Budapest get you down. 'Lewis is very self-critical. He is always extreme in his reactions. Sometimes he is too hard on the car, sometimes on himself. He wants to get the most out of himself and everyone in the team. 'You have to calm him down and explain to him that in Q2 [in Hungary] he was only a tenth of a second behind the driver [Leclerc] who later took pole position. That's no big deal. 'The message he sends out only makes things worse. 'Most of the time, he's only that extreme with the press. By the time he comes into the briefing room, he's usually calmed down again. That's just his way.' The Formula One season is currently in the middle of a summer break - with Hamilton sitting a lowly sixth place in the race for the title and a whopping 175 points behind Oscar Piastri. The F1 season returns with the Dutch Grand Prix - with race day on August 31 as Piastri looks to extend his advantage at the top of the standings over McLaren team-mate Lando Norris.

Paul Merson 'cannot believe' Chelsea aren't trying to sign £60m star this summer

Paul Merson says Chelsea's attack are 'predictable' in their current guise and he 'cannot believe' the club have not been in the race for Eberechi Eze this summer. Chelsea got their season off to a disappointing start as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace, despite spending in excess of £230million on new signings in the transfer market. It could have been worse for the Blues after Eze fired home a superb 13th-minute free-kick at Stamford Bridge, only for the strike to be disallowed by VAR. Eze has been courted by several top teams throughout the course of the transfer window and the latest reports suggest Tottenham have reached a £60m agreement for the versatile 27-year-old. Arsenal have also been credited with a strong interest in Eze, but the Gunners are thought to have dropped their pursuit of Palace's FA Cup hero after Ethan Nwaneri decided to put pen to paper on a new contract. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. While Chelsea are not known to have held serious discussions for Eze, Merson feels the England international would be an ideal signing for the Club World Cup winners to help ease the pressure on Cole Palmer. 'I cannot believe Chelsea aren't going for Eberechi Eze. I really don't know what I am missing,' Merson – a lifelong Chelsea supporter – wrote in his Sky Sports column following the weekend's Premier League action. 'They buy winger after winger, but they need guile. They need more than Palmer. 'If you get Eze, you then have two players who can break teams down. 'They are predictable for me. They play with two quick wingers with Palmer trying to feed them.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Merson believes there were several 'worrying' signs in Chelsea's stalemate with Palace and Palmer needs far greater 'support' if the club are to challenge at the top of the table. 'Chelsea were not good against Crystal Palace. The draw was worrying,' the ex-Arsenal, Aston Villa and England man added. 'If Cole Palmer isn't going to break a team down, I'm not sure who is for Chelsea. 'Palmer is now the talk of the town in team talks up against Chelsea. Teams are trying to stop him because they think stop him, stop Chelsea. 'Stop Cole Palmer will be the message for West Ham on Friday. That's just how it is. 'He needs some support. If opposition teams pick him up and mark him well, I'm not sure what threat Chelsea have. Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens have pace, but they struggled to beat their defenders on Sunday.' According to Merson, it should not always be down to Palmer to make the breakthrough and Enzo Maresca will have to 'come up with solutions' ahead of Chelsea's trip to West Ham on Friday night. More Trending 'It's hard for Palmer. You've got have runners around when you get the ball and for me, he hasn't got those,' he continued. 'It's not just all on Palmer because Enzo Maresca has to come up with solutions too. 'He has to work out a way to get him the ball in areas where he can hurt teams. But for Palmer, patience is key. He has to wait for the ball a bit more instead of dropping deep to come and get it. 'You cannot hurt anybody on the halfway line. He needs the ball in and around the box where he's special.'
