Penn Badgley says he was ‘close to broke' before Gossip Girl and took the role out of necessity, revealing the harsh reality behind his big break

Time of India24-04-2025

Before he became the face of one of the 2000s' most iconic TV characters, Penn Badgley was a teenager shouldering far more than lines and auditions. On the April 23 episode of Call Her Daddy, the You actor opened up about the financial and emotional challenges he faced before landing the role of Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl — a job he initially tried to avoid.
Badgley revealed that by the age of 15, he had become financially independent and, at times, the main breadwinner for his family. 'I wasn't always the provider,' he said, 'but I felt the need to support my parents from a young age.' Having started acting at 12, with roles in The Young and the Restless and other early gigs, Badgley said the grind of Hollywood wore on him quickly.
Penn Badgley said yes to Gossip Girl out of necessity
By 20, after nearly a decade in the business, Badgley was drained — both emotionally and financially. 'I had a tiredness about me at 20 that I think is not typical for a 20-year-old,' he shared. When the opportunity for Gossip Girl first came along, he wasn't interested. But with money running low and a strong pull towards living in New York, the decision soon became clear. 'I was close to broke,' he admitted. The rest, as they say, is TV history.
Badgley opens up about how Dan Humphrey became his identity
Badgley went on to star in all six seasons of the hit teen drama, which followed a group of privileged Manhattan high schoolers. Despite later success, including his current role as Joe Goldberg in Netflix's You, he admits Gossip Girl continues to follow him. 'I will still be answering questions about this show I decided to do when I was 20,' he told Call Her Daddy. 'And whatever. That is what it is… It sets you on a certain track that you have to in a sense resist. Work with it, interface with it. Otherwise, it just sort of takes you on its ride.'
He also opened up about the emotional toll of playing Dan, especially at such a formative age. 'I lacked the emotional maturity to understand how to differentiate [myself from Dan] in terms of self-worth,' he said. 'What people seemed to think of Dan seemed to be what people thought of me… I wasn't like losing myself. But it bothered me.'
Now starring as the chilling Joe Goldberg in Netflix's You, Badgley reflects on the role that changed everything. 'It sets you on a certain track that you have to resist… or it takes you on its ride.'
What's next for Penn Badgley?
Looking ahead, Badgley is set to release a book titled Crushmore, co-authored with his Podcrushed co-hosts, slated for publication in October. Beyond acting, he also stars in Moncler's Spring 2025 campaign.

Who is Aaron Rodgers' wife? NFL star confirms marriage but keeps her identity secret

NFL star Aaron Rodgers has confirmed he's a married man — but he's not saying who the bride is. The 41-year-old quarterback, who's preparing for his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, revealed the news at the team's minicamp this week, adding to the growing mystery around his personal life. Aaron Rodgers was seen wearing a wedding ring during a press interaction on Tuesday. When asked directly, he confirmed the marriage, saying simply, 'Been a couple of months,' referring to an offseason wedding earlier in 2025. However, that was all he would reveal. Rodgers offered no name, no date, and no details about his wife, keeping both fans and media guessing. Speculation has swirled for months. Back in April, Rodgers hinted on *The Pat McAfee Show* that he was in a 'serious relationship,' though he didn't name his partner. In a December 2024 interview, he mentioned dating a woman named 'Brittani' — with an 'I' — but whether she is now his wife remains unclear. Rodgers has had several high-profile romances in the past, including Olivia Munn, Danica Patrick and Shailene Woodley. In the 2024 Netflix series 'Aaron Rodgers: Enigma', he reflected on those public relationships, saying he now prefers to keep his love life out of the spotlight. 'I didn't do myself any favours with some of the girls I dated after that that were in the public eye,' he admitted. Aaron Rodgers is set to play his debut season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. The veteran quarterback has signed a one-year deal worth $13.6 million, with performance-based incentives that could take his earnings up to $19 million. As Rodgers gears up for a new chapter on the field with the Steelers, it seems he's also starting a new life at home — quietly and away from the public eye.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has frequently voiced his concerns about the Hindi film industry's shortcomings. Recently, he also took aim at streaming services, accusing them of putting business and profits ahead of creativity and artistic quality. According to him, these platforms have turned into commercial hubs, losing sight of true artistic values. Streaming Platforms Turning into Marketplaces Talking to SCREEN, Siddiqui said, 'Irrespective of any platform or any process, it starts out as great and then turns into a market. Baazar toh ban hi gaya hai. Studios in India keep saying we need 'commercial' qualities attached to every project. I don't agree with that. If the product is of a certain quality, then the commercial aspect eventually gets attached to it organically.' The Harm of Overemphasizing Commercial Aspects He explained that placing too much emphasis on the commercial side of art can cause significant harm. Over time, projects that begin with great passion often end up becoming purely business ventures.
