The quashing of the resolution is expected to give relief to many bungalow owners and housing societies from several areas in the city, including Sahakarnagar, Kothrud, Prabhat Road, Deccan Gymkhana and Aundh, who had raised concerns over the possible increase in high-rises in narrow lanes fronting their properties and the resulting pressure on the service lines and traffic.

The TOI campaign evoked spontaneous support from residents and political parties, including Congress and then undivided NCP and Shiv Sena. Yet, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s standing committee and the civic officials had sent the proposal to the state urban development department (UDD) for its approval.
BJP members Ujjwal Keskar and Suhas Kulkarni, both former chairman of PMC's standing committee, and undivided Shiv Sena's Prashant Badhe moved Bombay High Court accusing the PMC panel of not following the due legal process as stipulated under Section 210 (1) [B] of the 1949 Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act while bulldozing the road widening proposal.
The high court had asked the state UDD to give a hearing to both the parties and work out a solution. Accordingly, the state urban development principal secretary K H Govindraj held a joint meeting with Keskar, Kulkarni, Badhe, and PMC commissioner Rajendra Bhosale and city engineer Prashant Waghmare on April 11 this year.
The UDD on Monday published the minutes of the meeting, in which it has asked the PMC to resubmit a proposal recommending quashing of its earlier standing committee's resolution.
Pune municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale said he was yet to receive the minutes, but added "further steps will be taken based on instructions issued by the UDD".
A senior PMC engineer said, "We will study the UDD's instructions." He argued that the PMC had followed the necessary steps while tabling the road-widening proposal and had given a hearing to residents before sending it to the UDD.
BJP's Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasne was the standing committee chairman when the resolution was passed in 2020. He said he would seek more details on the instructions issued by the UDD.
"I also plan to discuss the issue with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the state urban development minister," Rasane said, arguing that the proposal to widen the six-metre roads to nine meters was aimed at allowing redevelopment of old societies
Petitioner Ujjwal Keskar said, "The standing committee's resolution was not in favour of citizens. We have successfully explained how the proposal was approved by PMC in an abrupt manner and in a haste. The due process was not followed. We appeal to the PMC to hold a survey of all six-metre roads to check the status of the construction activities and then prepare a fresh report."
Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay More and Prashant Badhe said, "The BJP-led govt in 2015 banned the use of TDR on six-metre-wide roads and hence, they were forced to push such a controversial proposal. Also, if the city has over 2,000 such six-metre roads, why only 323 were selected for widening?
Congress leader Aba Bagul, who opposed the proposal, said BJP pushed the proposal based on a "clear majority" it had in the general body.
"Their leaders did not explain why only 323 roads were identified. Also, they did not consider the huge burden the high-rise buildings on these smaller roads would put on the drainage, water supply, and other infrastructure," Bagul said.

A state-appointed expert committee has recommended that Mulshi water can be brought to the city and that the proposal should not be delayed further. In the last week of July, civic officials had put forth the same demand during a meeting held by Vikhe Patil at PMC headquarters to discuss water-related issues. The minister had told reporters that the state govt was positive towards granting 10 TMC water from Mulshi to the city and rural areas. He also mentioned that PMC must take efforts to reduce water leakage and wastage. Sources from the irrigation department said teams are already working on the technical aspects of the proposal. "It is a major challenge to bring water from Mulshi to Khadakwasla circle. We are conducting surveys and studies to make it possible. All surveys and reports will be completed on priority. Meat shops in Pune & Pimpri-Chinchwad to remain open on I-Day & Janmashtami
With neither the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) nor the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) ordering the closure of slaughterhouses or meat shops on Independence Day, meat shops in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain open as usual on August 15. The PCMC has over 1,200 meat and chicken shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. While there are as many as 200 meat shop licence holders in the PMC jurisdiction. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The decision comes amid a nationwide controversy sparked by some municipal corporations in the country ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15 and 16 on account of Independence Day and Janmashtami, respectively. In Maharashtra, similar directions from civic bodies in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Malegaon and Nagpur have triggered sharp (political) reactions. While some groups have come out in support of the closure as a symbolic gesture, others have criticised it as unnecessary and discriminatory. In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, civic officials confirmed that no such order has been issued which means these shops will remain open as usual on Independence Day and Janmashtami. The absence of a closure order in these cities has been welcomed by traders who said that such restrictions directly affect their livelihoods. However, the broader debate over whether or not meat shops should remain closed on national holidays continues across the state. Sandip Khot, deputy commissioner of the PCMC, said that no such order has been issued or will be issued directing closure of meat shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. 'Some municipal corporations in the state who had issued similar orders have scrapped the decision. All meat shops in the twin city will remain open as usual. Also, there is no slaughterhouse in the PCMC jurisdiction,' he said. The PCMC has over 1,200 meat and chicken shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. While there are as many as 200 meat shop licence holders in the PMC jurisdiction. Whereas, the PCMC does not have a slaughterhouse and the slaughterhouse in the PMC area is closed due to non-compliance with pollution control norms. Dr Sarika Funde-Bhosale, chief veterinary officer, said, 'We have not issued any orders to keep meat shops or slaughterhouses closed in the city on Independence Day or Janmashtami. After news that meat shops would remain closed in other districts on August 15 went viral, several traders contacted us and requested that we refrain from issuing similar orders. However, the PCMC does not plan to keep meat shops or slaughterhouses closed,' she said.

MNS demands action against PMPML contractor for flouting rules
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded action against a PMPML contractor for allegedly installing 300 bus stops in the city without securing mandatory permissions from the civic body. No permissions were obtained by the contractor, causing loss to the civic body, says MNS leader. (FILE PHOTO) The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) had appointed the contractor to set up 300 bus stops in the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal areas under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The work is currently underway. MNS leader Hemant Sambhus said he had sought details under the Right to Information (RTI) Act regarding permissions taken for the project. 'These bus stops are being installed on a BOT basis, allowing the contractor to display advertisements on them for 15 years before handing them over to PMPML. However, the PMC's Sky Sign and Road departments have confirmed in writing that no permissions were obtained,' he said. Following the RTI response, Sambhus met municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to highlight the issue. 'We informed the commissioner that despite being a PMPML project, it is mandatory for the contractor to obtain PMC permissions. This lapse causes financial loss to the civic body, which would otherwise collect advertisement fees. We have demanded action, and the commissioner has assured us he will examine the matter and take necessary steps,' Sambhus added.
