What happens to us when everything we thought we knew turns out to be fiction? Should we keep trying to recreate our fantasy world, or face up to reality and maybe even try to change it?
Barcelona Bites is a tapas restaurant, and Lara's been working there for five months. The service industry isn't where she'd thought she'd be after her Creative Writing course; it's probably not the dream destination for many arts graduates but it's where most of them end up. Times have changed since the 1960s, when a degree in English was a hot ticket to the BBC and Fine Art students could spend the rest of their days painting nudes in a Parisian garret. But Lara doesn't mind; she knows she'll get her novel finished someday, and in the meantime serving up plates of patatas bravas does pay the rent.
In Constance Peel's one woman show Service Please we first meet Lara as a relatively new – and relatively keen – member of the tapas team. It's no fun being the newbie, there's no practical training and she gets everything wrong, but the Head Chef is kind to her, he's her 'weird chef Dad.' What's more, this baptism of fire soon inspires her to start writing a fantasy romance starring Amara, a pupil at Dragon Academy. It's all good.
As Lara runs from kitchen to table and back again, Constance conveys the ever more frantic atmosphere in a restaurant beset by the challenges of too many Christmas parties, entitled customers, stupid jokes and endless complaints. Lara even begins to enjoy herself; customers, good and bad, inspire her writing, and Amara is flourishing too. The Head Chef showers her with gratitude and prosecco.
Lara thinks she has everything under control, but Constance drip feeds us little nuggets that show us how innocent her heroine really is. Lara doesn't question the chef's motives any more than Amara questions her Headmaster's; both of them look to men for validation. Lara lives in a fictional fantasy world, where happy endings are there for the taking – if men are good enough to hand them over.
When Lara's promoted to the management team she's pleased – until she finds out just what that entails; more rushing from pillar to post, more fielding of complaints, overrunning shifts, now all served with the added seasoning of staff problems, and for a generous pay rise of 19p per hour. Her writing is suffering, she's too exhausted to think about it; instead she goes to bed with a head full of misplaced orders and mismanaged tables.
And then something happens, something that shocks Lara to the core and sends her confidence into freefall. Lara tries to get it out of her system and into her novel, but that doesn't help; Amara's as lost as her creator. Abuse of power and gaslighting are both explored as Lara blames herself to excuse behaviour that has no excuse, but still so often finds one.
Lara's eventual escape from her torment comes through the much greater suffering of another woman. It's to Constance's credit that she makes sure her character realises that most people in service jobs are far more 'stuck' than she is; for them the work isn't a stopgap, and no matter what it throws at them they have little choice but to suck it up.
The resolution of Lara's story did, however, seem to me a little too easy, calling to mind the ending of so many chick lit novels in which the heroine inevitably ends up with a lovely little life. The difference here is that Lara's love life hardly features at all; she makes frequent references to her boyfriend Ash, but we know nothing about him, and I began to wonder why he featured at all. Some development of his character, if only as he affects Lara's life, would have added interest, alternatively he could have been axed to sharpen the focus on Lara herself. When she leaves the restaurant, Lara tells us that Ash is 'proud of her'; should this have mattered?
Service Please does perhaps place a little too much reliance on the one swear word; I have no objection to it, and one only has to watch any fly-on-the-kitchen-restaurant-wall documentary to know how frequently it's screamed across the counters, but a bit of variety in the oaths department would have been welcome.
A show at 9.55 in the morning is not an easy thing to pull off, especially when Edinburgh's weather has taken a turn for the worse. Audiences are neither warmed up by the sun nor other shows, nor are they fuelled by a good lunch or a few beers. Despite this, Constance keeps the audience's attention throughout, and really brings home to us the challenging drudgery of restaurant work, an aspect of modern life rarely addressed in theatre.
There's also a lot of humour in a play that could otherwise have turned into a relentless serving of woe; I particularly enjoyed Lara's description of middle-class parents encouraging their offspring to take their time to recite the entire table's orders while the infuriated waiting staff stand smiling through gritted teeth. I bet this scene has been played out in every eatery across the city this month. Parents who assume everyone will find their children every bit as enchanting as they do really do deserve spittle in their soup.

The comedian, 66, picked up the outstanding achievement award at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday and reflected on his career and experience starting out in the industry in the 1970s. 'It was hard, you know? I mean, they didn't have a light for me', he told the festival. 'I called it the negro light. I said, 'Break out the negro light' and they'd bring out this big-ass spotlight and point it at me.' Sir Lenny, who made his TV debut on British talent show New Faces in 1975, said someone who worked at the BBC 'started to realise that I needed different lighting to those guys'. 'Also there's the thing on (TV series) Three Of A Kind where all the wigs were for white people,' he said. 'So we had Michael Howard and Dave Allen's wigs, and they never had any wigs for me. 'I had to get some dreadlocks for a character. So they sent me to the London wig company, and they made some dreadlocks for me. 'And then a year later, they had more stuff for me to do, and they got nearer, closer to what they should be like. 'And so I sort of began a whole thing where they had to know how to make black hair, and they had to know how to do black make up.' He added: 'They're still struggling with it. People like (make up artists) Jan Sewell and Sally Sutton really knew how to do it, because they did it on my show. 'But before then, they never had to do it. 'I went to a black make up lady on The Fosters in 1976 and I thought, 'Oh, it's going to be like this. There's going to be people that do make up for us'. 'Once The Fosters was over I never saw her again.' Sir Lenny was born in Dudley, near Birmingham, in 1958, and shot to fame in 1975 when his stand-up comic routine won TV talent show New Faces. After his TV debut, Sir Lenny appeared on landmark black working-class comedy The Fosters, and comedy sketch show Three Of A Kind, before landing his own self-titled show in the mid-1980s. In 1985 he co-founded Comic Relief, and in 2015 he was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to drama and charity. A year later he was presented with a special Bafta award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television and in 2020 he helped to launch an independent body that examines representation in journalism, acting, film, television and radio in the UK called the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity. In February he received the Freedom of the City of London and in May he and filmmaker Richard Curtis accepted a philanthropy award recognising Comic Relief's efforts to address inequality and poverty.

The Fortune Hotel Season 2: release schedule, eliminations and where to watch

ITV competition show The Fortune Hotel is in full season 2 swing, with 11 pairs of contestants battling it out to find a briefcase stuffed with a £250,000 prize. Hot off the heels of BBC show The Traitors, in eight episodes players must work out which pair has the winning briefcase, and the goal is to end up with it at the end of the show. Daily challenges decide what order players can either keep or swap their briefcases, with the quarter of a mill secretly changing hands throughout the series. Eight briefcases are empty, while the ninth has an 'early checkout card' – which eliminates players landed with it at the end of each episode. Presenter Stephen Mangan told Metro how the show can be pretty savage, as winning requires contestants to lie and cheat. 'It's really difficult to brutally pull the plug on another pair and send them home, but you have to do it,' he explained. The series began with 11 pairs of contestants who know each other in some capacity, much like Race Across The World's format. Hoping for a chance to win were best friends Maz and Max; fellow besties Chelsey and Briony; father and son Atholl and John; brothers Jake and Mike; couple Allan and Jacob; couple Nella and Tope, partners Fred and Min; mum and daughter Martina and Briony; friends Gurk and Guv; and dad and daughter James and Yasmine. Players come from all walks of life, with jobs ranging from tech to cleaning, and retirees are also having a stab. Last week's episode ended on a cliffhanger – spoiler ahead – as with the introduction of a second early check-out card, both Fred and Min and Allan and Jacob seemed to be at risk. However host Stephen revealed only one of the pairs would be going home – as voted for by their other contestants, ouch . Tonight revealed Maz and Max sent home Allan and Jacob through tears, leaving them 'gutted'. So far other eliminated contestants include cleaning business owners Briony and Chelsey; retired police officer Atholl and son John from the Scottish borders; Wigan-born brothers Mike and Jake; and salesman Guv and poker player Gurks. Episodes are airing weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Huw Edwards, former BBC news presenter, is still wearing his wedding ring although his wife Vicky reportedly launched divorce proceedings in October 2024 Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has been spotted in public with his wedding ring still firmly on his finger, despite reports that his marriage to wife Vicky Flind has broken down. The disgraced broadcaster, 64, was photographed in Swansea earlier this week, marking his birthday with miniature bottles of prosecco. He was wearing his wedding band in the images. Edwards and Vicky Flind were married for three decades and share five children. However, it was reported in October 2024 that Flind had filed for divorce. Reports at the time suggested he had moved out of the family home and that their long marriage had come to an end. However, his wedding band was clearly visible in the photos taken in Wales, where he could be seen clutching three small bottles of fizz and a baseball cap while heading to his car. The sighting comes during his ongoing public fall from grace. Although he was once one of the most respected faces on British television, Edwards has largely vanished from the public eye since pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. He was sentenced in February to six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, after admitting to possessing seven Category A images – the most serious – alongside dozens of Category B and C images. Though Edwards avoided an immediate prison term, his sentencing made clear how close he came to jail. The court handed down a suspended sentence after hearing of his major depressive disorder and the considerable risks he would face in custody. Alongside the suspended sentence, Edwards was ordered to complete a 40-day Sex Offender Treatment Programme and attend 25 rehabilitation sessions to address both his mental health and alcohol use. He also lost his career over the incident, and Edwards resigned from the BBC in April 2024, a year after he last appeared on air to announce the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, the Welsh journalist has kept an extremely low profile, only being seen a handful of times. Earlier this year, he was photographed vaping in public, with onlookers describing him as "a shadow of his former, super-confident self". Flind, who is a TV producer, has not publicly commented on the current state of their relationship. She was previously praised for standing by Edwards during his mental health struggles and his wife's comment about his mental health problems at the time.
