Amul parent GCMMF gets new leadership: The dairy behemoth's tasks ahead

India Today6 days ago
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the powerhouse behind the globally renowned Amul brand, held its highly anticipated elections in Anand on July 22. The event marked a significant transition in the leadership of one of India's most influential cooperative institutions, with Ashok Chaudhary elected unopposed as chairman and Gordhan Dhameliya as vice-chairman, succeeding Shamal Patel and Valamji Humbal, respectively.Chaudhary, 55, hails from Chitrodipura village in Mehsana district's Visnagar taluka and is a prominent figure in the state's cooperative sector. He took over as chairman of Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy in 2021, after defeating a panel backed by former GCMMF chairman and a man of standing in the community Vipul Chaudhary.advertisementAshok Chaudhary's political roots go deep within the BJP, having served as general secretary of its Mehsana unit and president of the Mehsana municipality from 2005 to 2007. His ascent to GCMMF chairmanship reflects how political and cooperative clouts typically ally in Gujarat.Gordhan Dhameliya, the new vice-chairman, leads the Rajkot District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (Gopal Dairy). The unanimous election underscores his standing among the 18 member unions, with his nomination proposed by outgoing vice-chairman Valamji Humbal and supported by Ahmedabad Milk Union chairman Mohan Bharwad.
Outgoing GCMMF chairman Shamal Patel and vice-chairman Valamji Humbal served two terms of two-and-a-half years each, starting in July 2020 and re-elected in January 2023. Patel, chairman of Sabarkantha's Sabar Dairy, led GCMMF during a period of robust growth, with the federation achieving a turnover of Rs 65,911 crore in FY 2024–25, up 11.2 per cent, and a brand turnover of Rs 90,000 crore. Before Patel, Ramsinh Parmar, a former Congress MLA who joined the BJP, served as chairman from 2018 to 2020. GCMMF elections occur every two-and-a-half years, as mandated by the Gujarat State Cooperative Act, ensuring regular leadership transitions. The process involves the chairpersons of the 18 member dairy unions, each with one vote, supplemented by additional votes based on their unions' annual turnover with the federation. Notably, GCMMF has maintained a tradition of unanimous elections since its inception in 1973, reflecting a consensus-driven approach, though of late, seen as wholly guided by political directive from the BJP.The GCMMF chairmanship is a position of immense influence, overseeing a cooperative representing 3.6 million dairy farmers across 18,154 villages, processing around 31 million litres of milk daily—often peaking at 50 million litres. The chairman shapes policies that impact milk pricing, farmer welfare, and Amul's global expansion, making it a role with both economic and socio-political weight.Leadership in the cooperative sector is deeply steeped in politics of the day. Earlier, the Congress tried to woo and field cooperative sector leaders in polls as they would have established their influence in their region. The cooperative leaders did not always agree to enter mainstream politics. In the last two decades, however, since the late Dr Verghese Kurien stepped down in 2006 as the last non-political chairman, the BJP's complete takeover of the cooperative bodies means every leader is not just aligned with the party but holds a position only on receiving a mandate from it.advertisementThe 2025 elections saw no contest, with nominations for Chaudhary and Dhameliya proposed and seconded by BJP-affiliated dairy union leaders, reflecting the party's grip. Bipin Patel, the BJP's cooperative cell convenor, reportedly played a key role in ensuring a smooth transition, underscoring the party's strategic oversight. The cooperative sector in Gujarat, with GCMMF as its flagship, is a microcosm of political influence. This political alignment has often led to concerns from within the community itself about the autonomy of the cooperative model envisioned by founders like Tribhuvandas Patel and Kurien. The BJP's dominance ensures that dairy union leaders, often party affiliates, align with state and national agendas. Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah, a key architect of India's cooperative policy who himself rose the ranks of the BJP alongside a prominent role as chairman of Ahmedabad district cooperative bank, continues to wield significant influence.Meanwhile, Chaudhary and Dhameliya inherit a robust ecosystem, with GCMMF being India's largest food products organisation. The Amul model's success, rooted in farmer empowerment and professional management, has made India the world's top milk producer. Favourable factors include strong brand equity, a vast farmer network, and government support via the ministry of cooperation, established to bolster cooperatives nationwide.advertisementHowever, challenges loom. Global market competition, climate change impacting milk production, and the need to balance farmer payouts with consumer affordability pose hurdles.India's cooperative sector is central to its rural economy, with the ministry of cooperation aiming to replicate the Amul model nationwide. GCMMF is aggressively expanding across India—planning to invest Rs 11,500?crore over the next few years in greenfield and brownfield plants across six states—Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana and Goa—with a focus on modern dairies, bulk milk coolers and product diversification. GCMMF currently exports to about 50 countries and has recently entered the US and European markets.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), a statutory body that governs the chartered accountancy profession in the country, won the bid among the four online bidders. VP Gautham, vice-chairman of the Telangana Housing Board, said that the identities of the parties involved in the auction were not disclosed until the end of the online bidding. He also announced that the state govt earned revenues amounting to Rs 26 crore by selling Rajiv Swagruha Corporation flats in Bandlaguda on Wednesday. On Wednesday, 131 of the 159 remaining flats at Rajiv Swagruha Corporation at its Bandlaguda township were sold and allotted to middle-class beneficiaries through a lottery, said Gautham, the managing director of Rajiv Swagruha Corporation. Meanwhile, on June 11, the Housing Board conducted a land auction for 18 vacant plots in Phase 7 of the Kukatpally Housing Board Colony in Greater Hyderabad. Plot number 22 was sold at a record price of Rs 2.98 lakh per square yard, with officials claiming that the city's real estate sector is booming. A total of 6,232 square yards were auctioned for these 18 plots, with an average price of Rs 2.38 lakh per yard, and the highest price of Rs 2.98 lakh was paid for Plot number 22. Furthermore, Gautham said that the main purpose of the auction was to provide affordable housing to middle-income groups on a no-loss-no-profit basis, in line with the state govt's aim of providing housing at affordable rates in urban areas for the middle classes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The unsold flats included 19 one-bedroom apartments and nine flats for senior citizens. According to sources, this could be due to inappropriate Vastu and entrance. The govt will make a final decision on the remaining flats. Five auctions have been held in over a decade to sell the 2,700-odd 3-BHK, 2-BHK and 1-BHK flats, as well as flats for senior citizens, in Bandlaguda township. Only 28 flats remain. The auction and draw of lots for the flats in Pocharam township will be held on Aug 1 and 2.

Probe Agency Restitutes Rs 380-Crore Assets In Bank 'Fraud' Involving Ex-MLA

New Delhi: Attached assets worth Rs 380 crore have been restored to a designated Maharashtra government authority for distribution to the about 5 lakh "duped" depositors of a cooperative bank, controlled by a former MLA, as part of a money laundering proceeding, the Enforcement Directorate said on Wednesday. The case pertains to the Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd. in Panvel where it was alleged that its erstwhile chairman, Vivekanand Shankar Patil, in connivance with other officials of the bank, "cheated" the lender and "siphoned off" the funds for private investments. Patil, a four-time MLA of the Shetkari Kamgar Paksha Party, was arrested by the ED in June 2021. The money laundering case of the ED stems from a February 2020 FIR filed by the Pune Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The police alleged in its chargesheet that the then chairman Patil and other officials of the bank prepared 63 "bogus" loan accounts using "forged" documents without following the RBI guidelines and standard banking norms, and "siphoned off" Rs 560 crore for personal gains, the federal probe agency said in a statement. The ED said its probe found that funds were "diverted" to various entities "controlled" by Patil and his relatives. "He (Patil) purchased various properties and assets using the funds siphoned off from the bank and these proceeds of crime were utilised for the purchase of immovable properties at different locations in Raigad district of Maharashtra," it said. These assets, worth Rs 386 crore, were attached by the ED under two provisional orders issued in 2021 and 2023. The ED also filed a chargesheet in August 2021 before a special PMLA court in Mumbai. The ED said the liquidator appointed by the RBI for the bank filed an application, under section 8(8) of the PMLA, before the court seeking restitution of assets. The ED gave its consent, the agency said. The court issued an order on July 22 directing the release of the property -- Karnala Sports Academy at Panvel -- to the liquidator and to put it up for auction, the ED said. The court also ordered the Competent Authority (Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors) to "realise" the land at Posari, Raigad by auction for distribution amongst the depositors. "The bank had more than 5 lakh depositors having total deposits of Rs 553 crore, and they lost their hard-earned money. "In the larger interest of depositors and currently ongoing restitution efforts, ED took steps to expedite the process resulting in the restitution," the agency said. The PMLA provides for the process of restitution even before completion of the court trial in order to provide succour to the victims of frauds like bank loans and Ponzi scheme cheating. The fraud came to light after an audit was done at the instance of the Reserve Bank of India during 2019-20, when it was found that Patil was siphoning off funds from the bank through 67 "fictitious" loan accounts. The funds were sent to the loan accounts of entities/firms/trusts owned or controlled by Patil including Karnala Charitable Trust, Karnala Sports Academy and Karnala Mahila Readymade Garments Cooperative Society Limited, the agency had claimed in a statement issued in October 2023.

CM Yogi Adityanath Launches Youth Conclave and Expo-2025 in Lucknow

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the CM Yuva Conclave and Expo-2025 at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Gomtinagar, on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward empowering youth through self-employment under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan. The two-day event aims to integrate entrepreneurial opportunities with direct access to resources and financial support for young aspirants across the state. The Chief Minister inspected stalls showcasing franchise businesses, mobile enterprises, and advanced machinery. A key highlight of the event was the launch of the U.P. Mart Portal, a digital platform designed to connect aspiring entrepreneurs with suppliers, service providers, and institutional guidance. This integrated portal will serve as a one-stop solution for young entrepreneurs seeking streamlined access to tools and training. During his address to the audience, MSME Minister Rakesh Sachan announced that loans totalling Rs 2,751.82 crore have been distributed to 67,897 youths to date. This includes Rs 1,607.81 crore granted to 39,223 beneficiaries in the current fiscal year alone. The scheme targets 1.5 lakh youth, offering interest-free, collateral-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh—supplemented by a 10% subsidy—for individuals aged 21–40 with at least a Class VIII qualification. Since its launch on January 24, 2025, the initiative has seen over 6 lakh registrations. The conclave drew participation from more than 150 franchise brands, 75 machinery providers, 50 mobile business models, 25 major banks, and 30 government departments, alongside academic institutions such as IIT Kanpur, HBTU, AKTU, Lucknow University, Ambedkar University, and Amity University. Several MoUs were signed during the event to deepen partnerships in entrepreneurship and skill development. Youth attendees benefited from direct interactions with businesses and received financial literacy and entrepreneurial guidance from banking and departmental experts. Ten beneficiaries were felicitated with loan cheques on stage, and twelve others received letters of consent to initiate ventures with leading brands. Notably, well-known franchise brands like Garage have announced a waiver of franchise fees for the youth of Uttar Pradesh, providing additional incentives for aspiring entrepreneurs. The event featured panel discussions led by senior officials, academics, bankers, and successful entrepreneurs, who shared insights on startup strategies, innovation, and financial planning. Success stories from scheme beneficiaries such as Prabhunur Kaur (Kanpur), Vijay Pandey (Lucknow), Shashank Chaurasia, Tuba Siddiqui, and Amar Deep Singh (Sitapur) served to inspire the attendees. Minister Sachan praised the launch of the CM Yuva Mobile App and the U.P. Mart Portal as milestones in strengthening the state's entrepreneurial framework. He emphasised the significance of district-wise participation, directing officials to ensure representation of at least 50 youth from each district. With more than 5,000 students, apprentices, and innovators in attendance, the conclave reaffirmed the state's commitment to fostering a self-reliant and economically empowered youth community.
