Malaysia unveils cloud policy to drive RM110bil digital economy boost
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the NCCP serves as the nation's strategic blueprint to drive a sovereign, secure, inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem, positioning Malaysia as a premier investment destination in the regional digital economy.
He said the policy directly supports the objectives of MyDigital and the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, not only by setting the strategic direction but also by unlocking real economic potential.
He added that a recent study by the Asian Development Bank Institute and AWS projects that even a one per cent increase in cloud adoption could contribute up to RM10.5 billion to Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP).
"This figure is not just a statistic. It represents new jobs, greater opportunities and stronger economic resilience for our country.
"Moving forward, by accelerating cloud strategies from 2024 to 2028, we have the potential to unlock an additional RM110 billion in economic value," he said at the NCCP launch today.
Also present were Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong and the ministry's secretary-general, Fabian Bigar.
Gobind said the NCCP will drive investment in cloud technologies, boost the competitiveness of local businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and create a conducive business environment for innovation to flourish.
Previously, he noted, cloud initiatives in Malaysia were implemented in silos, creating a risk of falling behind in the fast-evolving global digital economy.
He said the NCCP addresses this gap by adopting a whole-of-nation approach, bringing together government agencies, the private sector, cloud service providers, academia and the community.
He added that the policy will be aligned with existing national digital strategies, including MyDigital, the National Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Policy and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) to ensure Malaysia remains on track to attract high-value foreign investments.
According to Gobind, the NCCP is anchored on five pillars, which are public sector transformation, private sector growth, data security, digital inclusion and environmental sustainability, forming a complete framework for building a globally competitive digital ecosystem.
Beyond economic growth, he said, the policy will deliver tangible benefits to the people, from equitable access to technology to the creation of high-skilled jobs.
"The NCCP is not just a technology agenda. It is an economic agenda. Investments in green data centres, cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity will strengthen our digital sovereignty while boosting GDP growth.
"Therefore, the Digital Ministry calls on all stakeholders to work together in implementing the NCCP in an integrated manner, ensuring Malaysia maintains its momentum as a key player in the global digital economy," he said.

Felda secures 94.97% of FGV shares, triggers delisting from Bursa Malaysia
FGV Holdings Bhd is set to exit Bursa Malaysia after the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) successfully acquired nearly 95% of the company's shares through its voluntary privatisation offer, which closed today. The total stake acquired by Felda and parties acting in concert (PACs) amounts to 3.46 billion shares, surpassing the 90% threshold required to trigger delisting. The takeover, launched on May 26 2025, offered RM1.30 per share, the same price as Felda's previous 2020 bid. This is below the independent valuation range of RM1.83 to RM1.99 per share. Felda Asset Holdings Company Sdn Bhd, a Felda subsidiary, led the offer with support from the Pahang state government, Felda management via Koperasi Kakitangan Felda Malaysia Bhd (Felkop), and individuals including Sulong Jamil Mohamed Shariff and his spouse Salina Samsudin. Following the closing, Bursa Malaysia will suspend trading five market days later, after which FGV will be formally delisted. Shareholders who did not participate in the offer can require Felda to acquire their shares under the same terms, with at least three months to exercise this right. FGV's listing in 2012 raised RM10.5 billion, one of the year's largest global IPOs. However, the company struggled in later years due to underperforming acquisitions and low public shareholding, which fell below 25% in 2021. With Felda now in full control, the authority plans to restructure FGV and prioritise the interests of its settlers, marking a new chapter for the plantation group. –TMR

Chinese and Asean experts gather to explore the region's digital future
KUALA LUMPUR (Xinhua): South-East Asian nations are poised to accelerate their adoption of new technologies and the digitalization of their societies, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said. China's significant advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border systems, and other emerging high-technology fields will enable members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), including Malaysia, to ensure their efforts reach all levels of society, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, Gobind said in his remarks at the 2025 China Mobile Southeast Asia Cooperation Conference. "Building a digital future requires deep cooperation with partners such as China. China holds significant advantages in next-generation network deployment, edge intelligence, AI applications, and cross-border digital platforms. Malaysia highly values its cooperation with China in the digital domain, and we welcome further collaboration," he said. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said in his remarks that in recent years, digital economy cooperation between China and Asean has entered a new stage of comprehensive depth, with Malaysia and China in particular having signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) to enhance investment and cooperation in the digital economy. "These emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities brought by the digital economy, green development, and AI. This not only brings development benefits to the people of both countries but also sets a new benchmark for regional digital economy development," he said. Meanwhile, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. "Southeast Asia is emerging as a global hub for AI, driven by a young population, strong economic growth, and supportive national strategies. Its rapidly improving computing infrastructure is laying a solid foundation for AI development and deployment," he said, adding that China Mobile is willing to work with partners from all sectors through close collaboration. Under the theme "Envisioning Intelligent Ecosystems, Empowering the Digital Future," the conference, organized by China Mobile, brings together leaders from government, the telecommunications industry, and academia to discuss the region's digital landscape. - Xinhua

RM1.12bil in losses to online scam in first half of 2025, says Home Ministry
KUALA LUMPUR: Online scams in Malaysia have caused a staggering RM1.12bil in financial losses in just the first half of 2025 alone, says the Home Ministry. Earlier on August 5, the Digital Ministry said online scam financial losses in 2024 reached a worrying RM1.58bil, a 2.53% increase from the year prior. The Ministry said the government would further intensify its efforts to curb online scams in the country, which include strengthening the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC). This would involve the creation of new positions involving various schemes, taking into account the establishment of the 24/7 Network function under a single governance entity. 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also agreed for the NSRC to be placed under the direct supervision of the Home Ministry. 'It has been decided that it will be led by the police,' the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply dated Wednesday (Aug 13). The ministry was responding to a question from Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH-Segamat) on the amount of money lost by Malaysians due to online scams and the steps being taken to address the issue. It also said that the feasibility of drafting a Cybercrime Bill is currently being studied as part of efforts to combat cybercrime in the country. The ministry added that the SemakMule portal, which enables the public to check bank account numbers, phone numbers and companies used by scammers, currently has 265,869 bank accounts, 211,265 phone numbers, and 12,724 company names recorded.
