How Mumbai Indians Can Finish Top Of IPL 2025 Points Table?
Last Updated:
Mumbai Indians have done remarkably well after starting their IPL 2025 campaign with four defeats in five matches.
With just two matches remaining in the IPL 2025, none of the four teams that have made the playoffs – Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians – has managed to clinch a top two berth. After a defeat to Chennai Super Kings in what was their last league match of the competition, GT, the current table-toppers, will not top the table and the best they can now hope for is a second spot, but it's something not in their hands now as they require other results to go in their favour.
Which means the remaining three teams – PBKS, RCB and MI – are all in the fray to top the table. It has been quite a remarkable turnaround for MI, the five-time IPL champions, after they began their season with four defeats in five matches.
The Hardik Pandya-led side has since lost just one match as they stormed into the playoffs. Currently with 16 points from 13 matches, they will next face PBKS, and the winner will definitely ensure a top-two finish.
Here's how MI can top the table
MI have a superb net run-rate (NRR) of 1.292, which is the best among all 10 teams of the season so far. They now face PBKS in Jaipur on Monday. With GT losing their last two matches, they cannot finish at the top of the standings. So, the winner of MI vs PBKS will replace the Shubman Gill-led GT at the number one position.
The loser though will drop out of the top-two race.
MI will get to 18 points and, thanks to a better NRR than GT (0.254), they will take the top spot. And to stay there, MI will hope RCB, who have 17 points, lose to Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match. A win for RCB though will push MI to the second spot since the Rajat Patidar-led franchise will take their tally to 19 points.
A defeat for MI, though, will keep them to the fourth spot.
The teams that occupy the first two spots after the end of the IPL league stage, square off in the first Qualifier. The winner of this match gets a direct entry into the final while the loser then faces the winner of the Eliminator in the second qualifier or, in other words, gets a second chance at making the title clash.
The teams finishing third and fourth square off in the Eliminator.

Shreyas Iyer 'Officially Joins India's White-Ball Captaincy' Race: Report
Last Updated: Shreyas Iyer's impressive performance as Punjab Kings captain in IPL 2025 has now helped him officially join India's white-ball captaincy race. Shreyas Iyer was in red-hot form for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he maintained his performance for Punjab Kings as well in the recently concluded 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. The right-handed batter from Mumbai, who finished as India's leading run getter in the ICC event played from February 19 to March 19 in three venues across Pakistan and one in Dubai, amassed a total of 604 runs in 17 matches for Punjab Kings. Apart from his batting masterclass, Iyer made headlines for his leadership as well and captained Punjab Kings to their first IPL final since 2014. Unfortunately, Iyer failed to win his second straight IPL title as captain, but he did enough to catch attention, and according to a report in Indian Express on Saturday (June 7), he has now officially joined India's white-ball captaincy race. 'Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race," one of Indian cricket's influential decision-makers was quoted as saying by Indian Express. Iyer, who has played 14 Tests, 70 ODIs and 51 T20Is so far, last played a Test match for India in February 2024, and his last T20I appearance was against Australia in December 2023. Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title last year, has made a big name for himself as captain in domestic cricket, but he has never got a chance to captain the Indian men's team in any format of the game. It was expected that he would be considered for a place in India's Test team for the upcoming five-match series against England after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but he was ignored by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Iyer's absence from the 18-member squad came as a surprise for fans around the world. Iyer, who is playing for SoBo Mumbai Falcons in T20 Mumbai 2025 these days, will next take the field for Team India in August 2025 when the Men in Blue travel to Bangladesh for three-match ODI and three-match T20I series. Ricky Ponting on why it was right call to give Test captaincy to Shubman Gill over Jasprit Bumrah: ‘You can't have a captain coming in and missing games'
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said that India had made the right call in appointing Shubman Gill as Test captain as opposed to the likes of the more experience Jasprit Bumrah due to the latter's injury history. 'I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple,' Ponting told The ICC Review. 'Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there, so I think it's the right decision.' 'Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him (Gill) a good crack at it for a long period of time,' he added. India will be without the experience of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, all of whom retired from the format while the veteran pacer Mohammed Shami also couldn't make the cut for the England tour after his fitness was found not up to the mark. Speaking on that, Ponting said it was tough to replace experienced personnel but he was also hopeful that Indian could handle the transition better than other countries. 'It's always very hard to replace players like that, (given) that have been around for so long that have played that much Test cricket. But if any country can do it and do it quickly, India can, because of the amount of young talent that they have,' Ponting said. 'I've seen it first hand for 10 years now around the IPL and we've seen the emergence of (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and these sort of guys that have come into international cricket with India and (have) done really well pretty much straight away. The skill side of it's one thing to replace and India will replace the skill side of it easily enough, but the experience is the big thing that's going to be missing for them. Now even with a young captain with Shubman Gill, they'll still have some experience around with KL Rahul and Bumrah and these sort of guys. But if you look at a rebuilding sort of phase, India can cope with it better than most other teams,' he added.
