Shreyas Iyer 'Officially Joins India's White-Ball Captaincy' Race: Report

Shreyas Iyer's impressive performance as Punjab Kings captain in IPL 2025 has now helped him officially join India's white-ball captaincy race.
Shreyas Iyer was in red-hot form for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he maintained his performance for Punjab Kings as well in the recently concluded 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. The right-handed batter from Mumbai, who finished as India's leading run getter in the ICC event played from February 19 to March 19 in three venues across Pakistan and one in Dubai, amassed a total of 604 runs in 17 matches for Punjab Kings.
Apart from his batting masterclass, Iyer made headlines for his leadership as well and captained Punjab Kings to their first IPL final since 2014. Unfortunately, Iyer failed to win his second straight IPL title as captain, but he did enough to catch attention, and according to a report in Indian Express on Saturday (June 7), he has now officially joined India's white-ball captaincy race.
'Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race," one of Indian cricket's influential decision-makers was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Iyer, who has played 14 Tests, 70 ODIs and 51 T20Is so far, last played a Test match for India in February 2024, and his last T20I appearance was against Australia in December 2023. Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title last year, has made a big name for himself as captain in domestic cricket, but he has never got a chance to captain the Indian men's team in any format of the game.
It was expected that he would be considered for a place in India's Test team for the upcoming five-match series against England after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but he was ignored by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Iyer's absence from the 18-member squad came as a surprise for fans around the world.
Iyer, who is playing for SoBo Mumbai Falcons in T20 Mumbai 2025 these days, will next take the field for Team India in August 2025 when the Men in Blue travel to Bangladesh for three-match ODI and three-match T20I series.

Guj delegation in London pitches for 2030 Commonwealth Games
Gandhinagar: A state delegation led by Harsh Sanghavi, minister for sports, Government of Gujarat, met senior officials from Commonwealth Sport in London as part of ongoing efforts to deepen understanding around the Commonwealth Games 2030 bid framework. The delegation also constituted representatives from Commonwealth Games Association India and ministry of youth affairs and sports, Government of India. Along with Sanghavi, senior IAS officers Ashwani Kumar, M Thennarasan, and Banchha Nidhi Pani also met Commonwealth Sports authorities. The proposals are expected to be submitted by Aug 31, and a decision on the selection of host city shall be made by Commonwealth Sport in Nov this year. Over two days of engagements in London, the Indian delegation participated in discussions and presented the preparations undertaken till now with respect to the bid. The Commonwealth Sport team mentioned that they will provide full support and collaborate with the interested host cities towards preparations of the proposals. "We believe that the Games of 2030 should be rooted in sustainability, community participation and above all athlete experience. Athletes are the heart of the Games and every decision we take will be shaped by their comfort, their needs and their performance," said Sanghavi. Emphasizing the importance of legacy for the games, Sanghavi said, "We are designing a model for hosting the Games that focuses on long-term impact rather than short-term spectacle using existing venues wherever possible and ensuring that the Games leave behind a meaningful legacy for local communities."
