TAWAU: A 17-year-old female was arrested last Saturday for allegedly attempting to extort RM5,000 from a driver by threatening to 'sell' his girlfriend. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was apprehended in the Fajar area by a police team led by Inspector Kasinam Kadri at 5.30pm. The arrest followed a police report made by a 47-year-old man who claimed he received threatening WhatsApp messages on Aug 5, at 9pm. The messages included photos showing bruises on his girlfriend's body, which the complainant believed were not sent by his girlfriend. The victim received another message on Aug 6, at 2.47pm, demanding RM5,000 in exchange for the safe return of his girlfriend. He was also threatened that his girlfriend would be 'sold' if he failed to pay the demanded sum. Following these threats, the victim reported the matter to the police. During the investigation, police identified and arrested the suspect, who is originally from Sandakan. An iPhone 13 believed used in the extortion attempt was seized. Jasmin said the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment, fines, whipping, or both. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KUDAT: A sand tugboat worker died after falling overboard near Pantai Bangau, Sikuati, on Thursday. Mohd Azman Idris, 31, is believed to have fallen while reconnecting a snapped anchor rope in rough seas. Kudat Fire and Rescue Station Chief Darickson Galanang said 12 personnel, led by PBK II Rasidi Sadai, were dispatched to the scene located 39km away after receiving a distress call at 4.46pm. The team mobilised a fire engine, an EMRS unit and a utility vehicle for the rescue operation. 'The distress call came from a worker of Syarikat Kibing Sikuati, reporting that three crew members had been swept away by strong currents,' he said. Cops nab three Ah Long with 24 ATM cards

SEREMBAN: Police arrested three suspected unlicensed money lenders, also known as "Ah Long," yesterday as part of an operation in the city. The men, aged 38 to 45, are believed to be part of a syndicate that actively found customers, put up posters, and ran unlicensed lending activities in and around Seremban. Police seized two vehicles, eight mobile phones, 24 ATM cards, 35 sets of borrower documents, five copies of identification cards, a Malaysian passport, and photos of borrowers who did not repay their loans. Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the operation was launched following intelligence and information gathered by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID). He said the case is being investigated for unlicensed money lending under Section 5 (2) of the Moneylenders Act, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both. Mohamad Hatta advised the public to be cautious to avoid becoming victims of unlicensed money lenders.
