Petronas' asset rationalisation ensures maximum resource use, says PM
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this ensures that the company remains competitive and sustainable in the long term.
He said that with Petronas being among the top ten in its field globally, the company must consider long-term perspectives in light of the uncertainties in the global oil and gas market.
"Petronas is making calculated decisions to release older assets and reinvest in new ventures to ensure maximum resource utilisation.
"Some assets are being sold to reinvest in new ventures, ensuring maximum utilisation of resources," he said during the Minister Question Time at Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 14).
Anwar said these decisions are made with commercial prudence, without political interference, to maintain Petronas' esteemed reputation.
Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH-Balik Pulau) has queried about Petronas' strategy amidst declining global oil demand and energy transition challenges.
Anwar highlighted Petronas' ventures into alternative energy sources, such as solar and green hydrogen projects at Kenyir Lake.
"These initiatives align with our low-carbon strategy and diversify our energy portfolio," he said.
In an additional question, Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) expressed concerns about the potential impact on employees due to Petronas' ongoing restructuring efforts.
Anwar acknowledged that over 5,000 workers might be affected by these changes, but reassured that comprehensive support measures are in place to assist those affected.
"We are ensuring that those affected receive training for new opportunities, with guarantees such as a year-long salary," he said.
Anwar said Petronas is committed to minimising the impact on employees by collaborating with government-linked investment companies and providing avenues for reskilling and upskilling.
Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) then raised concerns regarding Petronas' strategy on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports and how it would maintain its profit portfolio.
Anwar clarified that Petronas imports only what is necessary.
"Our import strategy is aligned with maintaining a competitive and commercially viable portfolio.
"Petronas balances imports and exports to maintain profitability," he said.
He said Petronas continues to export LNG to major markets, ensuring that these projects remain commercially viable and beneficial.
Anwar gave his assurance that any import requirements are balanced with the company's overall trade strategy and are intended to support both domestic needs and international trade relationships.

Anwar: No nation is safe when racial hatred thrives
CYBERJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to reject attempts to incite racial hatred and not be swayed by those exploiting sensitive issues to divide national unity. Speaking at a town hall during the launch of Multimedia University's (MMU) Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE), he reminded the audience that Malaysians must rise above destructive tendencies. "Remember, we are anak Malaysia who should love our country. "We must put an end to this destructive culture of corruption and racism, of inciting racial hatred, constant quarrelling, provoking and insulting religion or race. "This is not education. Education should lead us towards good and transformation," he said. He added that the country must be safeguarded against such elements, including bullying and abuse. Anwar said that Malaysia is a nation of laws with a firm legal system, and that violations would be dealt with regardless of a person's status or background. "This is a nation of laws with rules that must be respected. The National Unity Ministry exists because, to me, political stability is essential. "This country must also learn from others. Nowhere in the world has racial or religious hatred ever brought safety or stability," he said at the Temu Anwar programme. He was responding to a student's question on government efforts to strengthen unity and combat racism. "No country can remain safe if voices of racial or religious hatred are allowed to flourish. We must be firm in ensuring no one fans such divisions," he said. The prime minister also praised the maturity of today's youth in prioritising unity. "My outlook is very hopeful when I see young people today being positive and mature in their views on unity. But we must also recognise there are still groups trying to incite and distort facts," he added. Citing the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Anwar again stressed that the government has never concealed facts or protected anyone. "If it involves murder or bullying, I don't care whose child it is — if a crime has been committed, we will investigate and prosecute," he said. Also present at the launch were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. MMU's new FAIE will feature state-of-the-art laboratories to foster creativity and collaboration between students, researchers and industry partners, ensuring graduates remain competitive in the digital economy. The faculty will introduce a new Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Applied AI) programme, a three-year full-time course beginning in July 2025. Existing engineering programmes will also be enhanced with AI components to equip students with advanced technological skills. Applied AI covers technologies such as machine learning and automation to address real-world challenges, including smart healthcare, autonomous vehicles, intelligent farming and personalised digital assistants.

Malaysia to roll out carbon tax in 2026, aligned with climate policies, market goals
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's carbon tax, set to be rolled out next year, will be aligned with national climate change policies and the domestic carbon market, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he said it would also take into account the ongoing fuel subsidy rationalisation. "The framework for the implementation of the carbon tax will be aligned with national climate change policies and the domestic carbon market, while also taking into account measures such as the fuel subsidy rationalisation, which has already begun," he said in his winding-up speech for the 13th Malaysia Plan. He said the carbon tax would not only support industrial decarbonisation efforts but was also crucial in safeguarding the nation's exports from the impact of the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He added that the ministry is also studying international best practices, including those from Norway, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Japan, as well as Singapore and Indonesia. These countries, he said, have implemented or are in the process of implementing carbon taxes and Emission Trading Schemes (ETS). The government plans to introduce the carbon tax next year as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In its initial phase, the tax will focus on the iron, steel, and energy sectors, which are the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
