Sahara: French Equality Minister Bergé Affirms France's Support for Moroccan Sovereignty
Marrakech – French Minister for Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination, Aurore Bergé, reaffirmed France's unwavering position on Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara during her visit to Rabat on Monday.
'I want to firmly recall the unchanging position expressed by President Emmanuel Macron: the present and future of the Sahara fall fully within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,' Bergé stated to the press after a meeting with Morocco's Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita.
The French minister noted that her official visit to the North African country builds on the strengthened exceptional partnership desired by President Macron and King Mohammed VI following the state visit in October 2024. 'This partnership has opened a new chapter between our two countries that we are writing together for the long term,' she said.
Bergé pointed out that her visit takes place 'in a spirit of responsibility and seriousness regarding issues of common interest.' She expressed her conviction that Paris and Rabat want to move forward together within a framework of equality and shared growth for decades to come.
'Our two countries have much to learn from each other'
She also acknowledged Morocco's progress under King Mohammed VI's leadership, noting the country has engaged in 'decisive political, economic and social modernization, as evidenced by the major reform of the Family Code.'
'Our two countries have much to learn from each other. Facing the major challenges of our time—economic, social, demographic, climate, security—I am convinced that our destinies are linked,' she insisted.
On women's rights promotion, Bergé called Morocco 'an essential partner' in 'feminist diplomacy,' adding that both countries are working together to strengthen cooperation in combating all forms of violence against women.
On the first day of her three-day work visit, Bergé also met with Morocco's Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah. Their discussions centered on common challenges related to women's employment, as well as how to promote economic inclusion and gender-responsive budgeting.
They stressed the importance of removing barriers to women's access to the labor market and the value of models such as the social economy and women's cooperatives.
Fettah stated that women's employment is a strategic priority, particularly as unemployment remains at a concerning level and women's jobs prove especially vulnerable during crises.
She also talked about the potential of women's cooperatives as an effective lever for promoting economic inclusion in different regions and within vulnerable social populations.
Regarding gender-sensitive budgeting, Fettah noted that Morocco, a pioneer in the region, must now strengthen the evaluation of these policies' impact and demand concrete, measurable results.
For her part, Bergé stressed the need to address barriers limiting women's access to employment by tackling inequalities in career choices, parental role distribution, and work organization.
She added that gender equality must be conceived as a global dynamic concerning both businesses and public policies, following an inclusive approach that leaves no category excluded.

Maroc Telecom Raises $300 Million in First Private Bond Issuance
Marrakech – Maroc Telecom has successfully completed its first private bond issuance on the Moroccan market, raising MAD 3 billion ($300 million) from institutional investors. The operation marks a key benchmark in the telecom giant's financial optimization strategy. The bond, structured as a private placement with a two-year maturity and in-fine repayment, was issued at a fixed rate of 2.37%, including a risk premium of 20 basis points. The strong interest from investors, as the company noted in its statement today, reflects confidence in Maroc Telecom's solid fundamentals and sustainable growth trajectory. The raised funds will serve two main purposes: proactively refinancing part of the company's existing debt and providing new financial flexibility to accelerate strategic investments. These investments will target key areas towards deploying 5G, expanding fiber optic, enhancing the customer experience, and developing innovative solutions for businesses. This financial operation is part of a broader revival and consolidation strategy, as the group reaffirms its ambition to play a driving role in Africa's digital transition. Present in eleven countries, Maroc Telecom remains a leading force in the telecommunications sector, with 53% of its shares owned by the Telecommunications Participation Company (SPT, controlled by Etisalat) and 22% by the Moroccan government. The bond issuance comes shortly after Maroc Telecom secured a long-term financing partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Group subsidiary dedicated to the private sector. The agreement involves a total loan of €370 million (approximately MAD 3.7 billion) to support Maroc Telecom's subsidiaries in Chad and Mali. The IFC partnership aims to improve mobile connectivity and internet quality in these countries, supporting 4G service deployment and expanding internet access to more people and businesses. This aligns with the African Union's goal of building a secure single digital market in Africa by 2030. Maroc Telecom reported revenue of MAD 36.7 billion ($3.67 billion) last year, marking a 1.2% increase, with its Moov Africa subsidiaries showing 4.6% revenue growth. The group's African operations performed strongly across key segments, with mobile data growing by 15.6%, fixed internet by 21.1%, and Mobile Money services by 14.4%. In a related development, Maroc Telecom recently transitioned to a unified governance model, replacing its previous dual structure with a streamlined Board of Directors. Mohamed Benchaâboun, appointed in February, continues as CEO, leading the company through its digital transformation and innovation initiatives across Morocco and Africa. 'Marhaba': Morocco Prepares for Transit of 7.5 Million Passengers, 2 Million Vehicles via 13 Maritime Routes- Minister
The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, announced on Monday at the House of Representatives that, in preparation for the 'Marhaba' operation, his department has taken a range of measures, in close coordination with all stakeholders, to ensure the transport of 7.5 million passengers and 2 million vehicles via 13 maritime routes. In response to a question on "transport fares across all modes," Kayouh stated that 29 ships have been mobilized, with a weekly capacity of 500,000 passengers and 130,000 vehicles, distributed over 13 maritime lines, totaling 7.5 million travelers, 2 million vehicles, and 7,800 crossings. He added that authorizations have been granted to 59 airline companies to operate approximately 2,135 weekly flights between Moroccan airports and 141 international airports. Kayouh also noted that the Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has mobilized four additional aircraft for the summer period and will offer a total of 6.6 million seats- an increase of 700,000 seats compared to 2024- reflecting RAM's commitment and involvement in efforts to facilitate the return of Moroccans residing abroad. The minister recalled that, as part of its strategic choices, the Kingdom adopted the 'Open Sky' policy in 2006 - a decision that has paid off, with over 50 airline companies, including several low-cost carriers, now operating in Morocco and connecting the country to numerous destinations, mainly in Europe. UNHCR Official Lauds Morocco's Humanist, Solidarity-Based Approach to Refugee Rights
The Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Morocco, François Reybet-Degat, praised on Friday in Rabat Morocco's commitment to refugee rights, highlighting the Kingdom's humanist and solidarity-based approach in this area. Thanks to this approach, enshrined in the National Immigration and Asylum Strategy (NIAS) launched in 2013, Morocco has become both a transit and host country for asylum seekers, currently hosting 18,463 refugees and asylum seekers from more than 60 countries, noted Reybet-Degat during a press conference in Rabat held on the occasion of World Refugee Day. The Kingdom has established itself as a key player in managing migration flows in Africa and beyond, he emphasized, adding that the UNHCR works closely with Moroccan authorities to integrate refugees and asylum seekers into national education, healthcare, and employment systems. "Morocco embodies a tradition of hospitality and openness," stated the official, commending the efforts made to ensure the inclusion of refugees in national initiatives. On a global scale, Reybet-Degat noted that the number of forcibly displaced people has increased for the 13th consecutive year, reaching a record 123 million people, including 43 million refugees. This figure was 41 million in 2010 and has nearly tripled in just a decade, he pointed out. MAP: 20 June 2025
