Olena Perez and her husband tied the knot in May 2022
After a year of trying, she finally discovered she was pregnant on Father's Day 2023
Perez decided to post her mother's reaction to her pregnancy announcement on TikTok, and the video went viralWhen Olena Perez found out she was pregnant after nearly a year of trying, she could barely wait to tell her family.
She decided to break the news during a casual dinner at a sushi restaurant, choosing the patio as the perfect spot to stage a group photo. But instead of a snapshot, someone was secretly recording the viral moment to come.
In the video that was filmed back in 2023, Perez is seen holding up her positive pregnancy test, hoping for a heartfelt reaction, especially from her Ukrainian mom, who often asked when she'd finally be expecting.
However, to Perez's surprise, her mom was so determined to capture the family photo that she neglected her daughter's big news.
'I thought she would be more excited and happier, but this was a typical reaction from my mom,' Perez tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Since posting her mother's reaction online, the video has racked up over 30 million views, with some commenters suggesting the daughter should have announced the news differently.
However, Perez says she had grown tired of being constantly asked if she was pregnant or when she planned to have a baby, and decided it was time to get it off her chest when they all got together.
'It took me a year to get pregnant and I was holding this news to myself for a bit as my parents were traveling and this was the first time we were seeing each other in person,' she explains.
'My mom also insisted on going to a sushi restaurant, so I needed everyone to understand up front why I wasn't eating anything," she adds.
Looking back at the video, the 34-year-old says it was clear that everyone was confused, as no one seemed to be expecting the announcement. Besides her husband, Perez's mom, stepdad, uncle, aunt, and brother were all unaware she was pregnant.
Apparently, Perez's mother thought her daughter had taken out the positive pregnancy test by mistake.
'I was annoyed she ruined the cute content moment, that's for sure, but I know my mom loves and cares about me and she is just the way she is,' Perez admits. 'People can perceive her as cold but to me she's just an Aquarius Sun and Scorpio Moon/Rising.'
Her mom always pushed the family to take photos so she could post them on Facebook. Ironically, on this particular day, they ended up only recording the video – and never actually took a single photo.
''I'm not upset or surprised because my mother is a main character. She loves getting the photo,' Perez explained in a 'story time' update on TikTok.
'She will harass everyone to get a family photo – and thank God, 'cause now we have memories – but that day, we have no memory other than this video that came up in my memories randomly and I decided to repost.'

Perez tells PEOPLE that if her mom hadn't been out of town when she first found out she was pregnant on Father's Day 2023, she would have shared the news with her privately.
'My advice would be to do it in private with just your mom so you can have a moment together and then announce it to the whole family,' she says.
Despite her mom's underwhelming reaction, Perez, who gave birth to her son in February 2024, says she is the most loving grandmother to Mason.
Perez plans on hopefully expanding her family with her husband in the near future.

TikTok Canada halts arts sponsorships including with TIFF, Junos as shutdown looms

TORONTO - TikTok says it's pulling out as a sponsor of several Canadian arts institutions including the Juno Awards and the Toronto International Film Festival as it prepares to comply with a federal order to shut down operations in Canada. Since opening offices in Toronto and Vancouver TikTok says it has invested millions in programs and partnerships supporting local artists and creators over the past five years. But TikTok Canada's director of public policy and government affairs Steve de Eyre says Ottawa is now enforcing its order from last November to wind down operations over national security concerns, and TikTok has no choice but to suspend those initiatives indefinitely. Another group that will be impacted is the education charity MusiCounts, which TikTok says it's provided with $500,000 to date to support high school music programs. The social media giant has been a Junos partner since 2020 and a title sponsor of the Juno Fan Choice Award. It's also worked with TIFF since 2022, sponsoring the festival's Short Cuts and Special Presentations programs, and supporting industry panels that featured Canadian creators. Also among the casualties is the National Screen Institute's TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators that has worked with nearly 400 participants since 2021. Sarah Simpson-Yellowquill, the program's manager, calls the shutdown 'sad and disheartening,' saying the accelerator has been a vital source of career opportunities and mentorship for Indigenous creators. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 7, 2025.

Homeowners shocked by neighbor's handwritten note after painting their house a bizarre color: ‘I cried'

In a small Michigan neighborhood, a simple splash of paint sparked something far bigger than curb appeal — it stirred hearts and kindled human connection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maureen Clemons and her husband, Mike Peck, wanted to brighten their lives, so they picked up their paint brushes and covered their house in a coat of lavender stain. 5 Maureen Clemons and her husband, Mike Peck, picked up their paint brushes and covered their house in a coat of lavender stain — they never imagined the impact it would have on their neighbors. Instagram/moreangrim 'We wanted something to distract ourselves and make us happy,' Clemons, 35, told Newsweek. 'We picked purple because it felt bright and joyful.' The creative couple, both 35, thought a 'cute cottage vibe' would lift their spirits during the dark times — they didn't think how it would affect others. As the couple painted, neighbors walked by, offering waves, smiles, and even cheers. 'A couple biking by started chanting 'Go purple! Go lavender!'' Clemons recalled. 'Someone even stopped to tell us how happy the color made her — it brightened her day.' But the most touching moment came in December, when a mysterious neighbor named Chris dropped a surprise into their mailbox: a worn copy of the children's book 'Mr. Pine's Purple House' by Leonard Kessler, along with a heartfelt handwritten note. 5 'A couple biking by started chanting 'Go purple! Go lavender!'' Clemons recalled. 'Someone even stopped to tell us how happy the color made her — it brightened her day.' Instagram/moreangrim 'Hi, a while ago I was walking by your house when you were painting. It reminded me of one of my favorite books from childhood, that celebrates individuality,' the note reads. 'I could not remember the exact name, but after some searching I was able to find it. I hope you enjoy the story.' 'Hopefully you won't mind that it's well read.' 5 The most touching moment came in December, when a mysterious neighbor named Chris dropped his favorite childhood book into their mailbox. But his sweet note and the memory of the impact their will be with them forever — literally. Clemons got a tattoo of their beloved purple home on her leg, inked by a local artist in Ferndale who, in a twist of fate, had unknowingly taken a photo of the house months earlier. 5 The couple 'were overwhelmed' by their neighbor's sweet gesture. When Clemons shared the story via a TikTok video on her account @moreangrim, the response was immediate and emotional. 'Sobbing,' a person commented. 'You never know your impact. I'm so glad they shared this,' another said. 'This is the type of whimsy I want to see every day in our world,' someone else wrote. Clemons captioned the video: 'Sometimes humans are so cute.'

He picked out the present. He made a card. He was so excited. Then came the text message that broke his little heart: Advertisement 'I'm very sorry, but we've already reached the limit for children attending the party.' 'Is it 'cause I've been naughty?' It's a scenario that's left the internet scratching its head and one that prompted Melbourne mom Nicole to post a TikTok explaining what had happened to her friend's son. 'I'm still speechless because I just can't fathom how somebody can do that and think it's socially acceptable. Because it's not. It's rude,' Nicole told Kidspot. 4 A mom RSVP'd for her child for a classmate's birthday party, only to be told no. TikTok/@nikkaloola Advertisement Her friend had RSVP'd to a classmate's party. Treating a five year olds birthday party like it's Saturday night at Prince in 2007. KBing people at the door. Insane. ♬ original sound – Nikka 🇦🇺 The party was set to be held at a play center, with a set number of participating children, but Nicole questioned why the father would send out more invitations than he could accommodate. 'I can't comprehend this type of behavior. Because to me it's common sense. You send out enough or you send out less and you wait,' she said. Studio Peace – 'He's impacted the kids' ability to make friends.' 'No awareness. Absolutely none.' After sharing the story, Nicole said her comments were flooded, not just with outrage, but with parents who had experienced a similar birthday party invite burn. It's a full power trip thing,' she explained. 4 'She is not going to go near this family with a 10-foot pole, and that unfortunately will affect his child,' the woman said in the video. VAKSMANV – Nicole summed up the absurdity with a line that resonated with many parents: Why are we treating birthday parties like a nightclub? Advertisement 'I think at least with a nightclub, they are purposefully like, 'We've got caps. We only want the beautiful people in.' I think this particular parent just really had no idea the impact of what he was doing,' she explained. 'He had no awareness. Absolutely none.'
