Strictly winner and Gladiator star to headline Southport Flower Show

Southport Flower Show returns this week for four days of horticultural highlights, celebrity guests, television chefs and even a real-life Gladiator.

The finishing touches are being made to show gardens, exhibits, and trade areas at the town's 34-acre Victoria Park. Competition judging takes place later this week.

Celebrity guests include Emmerdale actor turned farmer Kelvin Fletcher and wife Liz from TV series Fletchers' Family Farm; punk icon Toyah Willcox; wildlife cameraman and Strictly winner Hamza Yassin; Zack George – Steel from Gladiators; Christian Lewis from The Wilderness Family; and children's TV favourite Justin Fletcher.

Last year the event reached its milestone 100 th anniversary, attracting 50,000 visitors across the four-day event.
Gates open to the public at 10am on Thursday. (14 August). Show times are 10am to 6pm Thursday to Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
A packed programme spanning the four days features celebrity guest Q&A sessions in the Garden Theatre and live demonstrations in the Cookery Theatre; live music performances on the Piazza Stage; and an outdoor show arena hosting dog display teams, birds of prey, and horse shows.
This year sees more family attractions than ever before. Alpacas are visiting for the first time, and a new children's trail highlights include conservation, scarecrow festival, children's yoga, doodle wall, and tennis skills.

He commented: 'Victoria Park is a real hive of activity with show gardens reaching the end stages of build, garden and cookery theatres being kitted out, marquees and exhibits dressed, and traders arriving to set up their stalls. Every single individual involved plays a vital role in the ongoing success and appeal of Southport Flower Show. It never ceases to surprise me each year just how committed and focused everyone is to get things exactly right. It's incredibly inspiring.
'Our special guest line-up spans all four days with plenty of opportunities to hear from the celebrities and watch the chefs live in action at the two dedicated theatres. Join us for a day bursting with colour, live entertainment, food, shopping – and not forgetting the beautiful blooms which await you.'

Thursday 14 August: David Domoney, Kelvin and Liz Fletcher, Christian Lewis, Rosemary Shrager, Martin and Jill Fish.
Friday 15 August: Toyah Willcox, David Domoney, Carole Baxter and George Anderson, Gladiator Steel Zack George, Phil Vickery, and Martin and Jill Fish.
Saturday 16 August: Carole Baxter and George Anderson, Hamza Yassin, Nick Bailey, Cherish Finden, Nancy Birtwhistle, and Martin and Jill Fish.

Tom Skinner has hit back after fans lambasted his Strictly Come Dancing appearance. The former star of The Apprentice was announced as one of this year's celebrity contestants on the hit BBC show. However, viewers were quick to make their feelings known about the decision to sign up the star. Toms, 34, was unveiled as the tenth contestant for the new series of Strictly. And in the Instagram post of the announcement, fans fumed with the organisation. "Big yikes and no from me," said one. "Do some more research please, BBC babes." "Wow absolutely disgraceful decision," added another, while a third said: "Oh no. This man is so offensive." And a fourth said: "Yeah Strictly ... this ain't it. This is such a bad vibe choice. Ugly opinions and deeply polarising. Can't help but feel like this is going to be an own goal." On Twitter /X, Tom has over 400,000 followers on X. And he admitted that he has seen some of the criticism headed in his direction today. In a new post on the platform he wrote: "They say don't read the comments on social media. But I couldn't help myself. "I've had absolute pellets all day on my instagram lost about going on strictly." He then shared a link to Instagram as he went on: "Have a look at some of these on Instagram …. Why are some people so angry that don't even know me. Not Bosh." Earlier, he had posted: "Well the news is out about me going on Strictly. Never in a million years did I think I would Recieve the amount of messages of support (and the also amount of hate). "But thank you to everyone. You're absolutely legends. I'm gonna sit and have a few cold ones and take in what's actually going on. Life is crazy. Gotta grab everything with both hands and take it for what it is. Hope you have a wonderful afternoon. Love you all. Bosh." The backlash comes after Tom, since his appearance on the Apprentice, has become known for his social media content. He sometimes post controversial opinions, as well as takes on business, politics and family life. As well as Tom and the BBC facing the fume of fans, a number of the stars of Strictly also felt the wrath online. Strictly, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in September, with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas as judges.

The professional dancer, who could end up pairing with Tom, simply wrote: "Welcome," alongside a pink love heart emoji and a bow. "Don't see this as a good thing for strictly," one user responded alongside a sad face and nauseous face emoji. ‌ Maisie Smith says Strictly was 'scarier' than Celeb SAS despite 'crying every day' Shirley Ballas also faced backlash after saying "welcome" to the star. Others so far revealed to be taking to the dance floor include Olympic sprinter and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who was the first contestant confirmed for the 2025 line-up on Monday. Love Island winner Dani Dyer was the second celebrity confirmed for the new series, with Alex Kingston and Jimmy Floyd Hassebaink quickly following. Actress Balvinder Sopal was then the fifth contestant to be revealed as part of the line-up, before TikTok sensation George Clarke was announced.
