South Korea's Lotteria expands to Malaysia in partnership with Serai Group

KUALA LUMPUR: South Korean giant Lotte Corp, through unit Lotte GRS is bringing the globally celebrated burger franchise Lotteria to Malaysia in partnership with Serai Group Sdn Bhd.
The initiative is part of Lotte's wider ambition to expand its K-burger footprint across Southeast Asia and beyond.
Serai Group said the collaboration, signed at the iconic Lotte World Tower in Seoul, marks a milestone in its continued growth as a key player in the Malaysian food and beverage (F&B) industry.
Under the partnership, Serai Group plans to open 30 Lotteria outlets across Malaysia within the next five years, with the first store slated to open by the end of 2025.
The agreement does not grant Serai Group the rights to sub-franchise the Lotteria brand or operate outlets beyond Malaysia.
Founded in 1979, Lotteria is one of South Korea's most beloved quick service restaurant brands.
With successful entries into markets like Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Mongolia, the brand now turns its sights to Malaysia, bringing with it a commitment to both localisation and quality.
Serai Group is known for homegrown F&B brands such as Serai, Jibby & Co and Jibby Chow, and sees the partnership as more than a franchise launch.
"It is an opportunity to introduce a fresh, dynamic fast-food experience that blends international appeal with local sensibilities.
"We see this as more than a brand launch, it's an opportunity to localise global favourites in a way that resonates with Malaysian tastes and values," Serai Group managing director Datuk Mohd Najib Abdul Hamid said in a statement.
Lotte GRS chief exceutive officer Woo-Chul Cha said it aims to ensure the successful localisation and sustainable growth of the Lotteria brand in Malaysia.

Malaysia aims to expand cocoa cultivation to 10,000 hectares by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) has set a target to expand Malaysia's cocoa cultivation area to 10,000 hectares by 2030. This initiative aims to meet rising demand for high-quality Malaysian cocoa, up from the current 5,985 hectares. Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin highlighted the Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Programme as a key strategy. The programme, led by KPK and the Malaysian Cocoa Board, focuses on boosting cultivation through the plantation sector. Chan also announced an upcoming engagement programme in Tawau to promote cocoa farming in Sabah. He shared this during a Dewan Rakyat session in response to a question from Datuk Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau). Recent data shows dried cocoa bean prices surged by 141 per cent to RM24,274 per metric tonne in 2024. This marks a significant rise from RM10,073 in 2023, reflecting growing market demand. When asked about cocoa-based products, Chan emphasised KPK's focus on branding premium local cocoa. The ministry promotes single-origin and fine-flavoured cocoa to attract global chocolate makers. KPK also provides tailored support to farmers, including fertilisers and pest control measures. These efforts aim to enhance soil fertility and reduce crop losses from pests and diseases. The expansion plan aligns with Malaysia's goal to strengthen its position in the global cocoa market. Farmers will benefit from targeted assistance to sustain and grow their cocoa cultivation. The initiative underscores Malaysia's commitment to high-quality cocoa production and agricultural sustainability. With rising prices and demand, the sector presents new opportunities for local producers. The government's support aims to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness in the cocoa industry. - Bernama

Sim welcomes Tengku Zafrul to PKR, praises him as ‘effective technocratic Minister'

Sim described Tengku Zafrul as a capable leader with the right values and breadth of experience to strengthen the party. Sim Tze Tzin. Photo: Facebook SHAH ALAM - Bayan Baru Member of Parliament (MP) Sim Tze Tzin has warmly welcomed the Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz into Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), lauding his track record as an effective technocratic Minister with both corporate and global experience. In a statement posted on X, Sim described Tengku Zafrul as a capable leader with the right values and breadth of experience to strengthen the party. Recalling their first meeting, Sim said that he first knew Tengku Zafrul when he was still the CIMB Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 'It was 2020 in a Hari Raya Open House. He sat beside me and we had a very engaging and intellectual conversation on economy and investment. A discussion that left a lasting impression on me. 'He has proven to be an effective technocratic Minister, navigating complex financial challenges during Covid pandemic,' he said, praising Tengku Zafrul's leadership during his tenure as Finance Minister in 2020. Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. Bernama FILE PIX He added that Tengku Zafrul's work as Miti's Minister in 2022 further demonstrated his capability, particularly in supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's efforts to secure record-high foreign and domestic investments. 'One of his most notable recent achievements was successfully negotiating with the United States (US) to reduce tariffs from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, a move that greatly benefited Malaysian industries. 'Tengku Zafrul is young, energetic (he likes to run) and hardworking. He has extensive Malaysian corporate experiences as well as global experiences. Not many leaders in Malaysia have this breadth of experiences. 'I observed that his political outlooks are very aligned to Keadilan: moderate, multiracial and global minded. Yesterday (Friday), Tengku Zafrul officially announced to join the big Keadilan family. 'I believe he will contribute towards building a stronger Keadilan. Welcome Tengku Zafrul, I look forward to working together and running together with you,' he said. The Miti Minister confirmed that the party had accepted his membership application and that he is now part of the Ampang PKR division. 'I can confirm that I applied to join the party and I informed the secretary-general on the matter,' he told Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion in World Expo 2025 on Friday. Asked if his application had been accepted, Tengku Zafrul replied: 'Yes,' adding that it was approved following the party's leadership council meeting about two weeks ago. In May, Tengku Zafrul resigned as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief and as a party member, after earlier stepping down as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year. He had also informed PKR President and Prime Minister Anwar of his intention to join PKR. His move came shortly after PKR figures Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned as Ministers, following their losses in the party's internal elections. Speculation about Tengku Zafrul's defection from Umno to PKR had been ongoing since late last year.
