Popularity of red carpet shouldn't overshadow cinema: Boman Irani on Cannes Film Festival

Time of India17 hours ago

Actor-director
Boman Irani
says he understands the glamour aspect of the Cannes Film Festival but believes the spotlight should remain on the artistes who are finally getting their moment in the sun.
Irani, who attended the film gala last month for the screening of
Anupam Kher
's director "Tanvi The Great" at the Marche du Film, said what filmmaker
Payal Kapadia
and
Neeraj Ghaywan
have achieved at the festival is inspiring.
"There is nothing wrong with having the red carpet, people and the glamour. The glamorous side of the world gets represented far more strongly than the cinematic side of it. However, what happens is that everything goes hand in glove.
"But there has to be a bit of imbalance at this point of time. I saw a photograph of Payal and
Neeraj
Ghaywan together; to me, that's the festival.
People who love cinema will find inspiration in what Payal and Neeraj have done," the 65-year-old actor told PTI in an interview.
Ghaywan's second feature film "Homebound" received a nine-minute standing ovation at the prestigious film festival following its screening in the Un Certain Regard section. He had earlier premiered his acclaimed debut feature Masaan at Cannes in 2015.
Kapadia made history in 2024 by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the prestigious Grand Prix -- the second-highest honour at Cannes -- for her debut feature "All We Imagine As Light".

This year, she returned to the festival as a member of the main competition jury.
Irani said the achievements of the two filmmakers at Cannes have made them popular all over the country.
"If Payal had gone there 15 years ago and won, I think it would have been a small little article in the newspaper and forgotten about. But today, thanks to all of this, Payal is now a household name.
"Neeraj is a household name, and it's so beautiful to see the two of them also walking during the red carpet with great aplomb, which makes me feel beautiful about it," he added.
Irani, who made his directorial debut with "The Mehta Boys" earlier this year, said he has no issues with people, "who don't understand or are not interested in cinema", attending Cannes and walking the red carpet.
"To each his own. As long as the festival is getting a lot of benefit out of that through whoever, I don't know whether I can call them influencers or whatever, the glamour side of it, it's fine. But the immense popularity of the red carpet should not overshadow the cinematic achievement," the actor added.
During his time at Cannes, Irani also seized the opportunity to watch
Spike Lee
's film "Highest 2 Lowest".
"I was there for Spike Lee's film, Denzel Washington, all of them were there, it was so beautiful (to see them). At the end of the day, everybody is there to have a good time, humble people talking about their movies, cinema, and talking to anybody and everybody. It's so wonderful."
On the acting front, Irani is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie, "Detective Sherdill", fronted by Diljit Dosanjh.
It is slated to release on June 20 on ZEE5.
The actor expressed his fondness for detective films and reminisced about iconic characters like Karamchand and others.
"I find Byomkesh Bakshi, Karamchand, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Hercule Poirot to be some of my favourites, they all are so amazing," Irani said.
"Detective Sherdill" is produced by
Ali Abbas Zafar
and Himanshu Mehra, and directed by debutant Ravi Chhabriya.
The film also features Diana Penty, Banita Sandhu, Sumeet Vyas, and Chunky Pandey among others.

Park Sung-hoon on playing a trans character in 'Squid Game': Wanted to avoid caricature

South Korean star Park Sung-hoon says as a cis-gender actor playing a transgender woman Cho Hyun-ju in the globally popular " Squid Game ", he approached the character with empathy and hoped viewers would also warm up to her. In a virtual interview with PTI, the actor spoke about the challenges of portraying a character like Hyun-ju, the massive global popularity of "Squid Game" and his wish to travel to India someday. A prominent name in the Korean entertainment world with his roles in "Memorials" (Into the Ring), "Not Others", "The Glory" and "Queen of Tears", Park's casting initially attracted criticism in the media but he was eventually praised for his sensitive portrayal. "That (backlash) was the most difficult part of playing this character... Because I'm a cis-gender actor playing a transgender woman, there could be backlashes and concerns about that," Park told PTI. "Squid Game", created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, revolves around a deadly contest where 456 players, all facing financial hardship, play a series of deadly children's games to win 45.6 billion won in prize money. Park, who is returning for the third and final chapter of the series, said he realised early on that authenticity was the key to playing a character like Hyun-ju, a former sergeant in the South Korean military who has been discharged for wanting to transition. Unemployed and disowned by her family, she gets into the games in the hope to earn enough money for a gender-affirming surgery. "I wanted to avoid caricature and I didn't want to imitate any mannerisms or cliches... I really focused on the qualities that she has. She's a very selfless person, she's charismatic, has leadership, and is very brave. "Because she's such a cool character, I thought her being a transgender woman was just one of the qualities that she has. If I am empathetic of her when I'm portraying her, I just hoped that the viewers would warm up to her. Like Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim), the old lady, warmed up to Hyun-ju in 'Squid Game'," he added. The third season of "Squid Game" is slated to premiere on Netflix on June 27. The first season of the show premiered on September 17 in 2021 and quickly became the most watched show on the streamer by attracting more than 142 million member households in the first four weeks of its release. It also won lead star Lee Jung-jae an Emmy Award. Park joined the show in the second season, which aired on Netflix on December 26 last year. The actor is happy that he got to play such an important role in the series but found it difficult to say goodbye. "It is always very sad to let a character, series or movie go, especially when you have such a cool character like Hyun-ju," he added. The 40-year-old actor said the many characters and their backstories in "Squid Game" make it easy for viewers to put themselves "in one of the character's shoes and resonate with that person". "It also talks about the sacred value of life and whether humanity is walking down the right path towards evolution and whether the voting system, for example, is the best way in a free democracy. So, it poses a lot of great questions that we all need to think about," he added. Does he have any plans to visit India someday? The actor said he would love to. "I was talking to Anupam Tripathi, who played Ali in season one, and I got very curious about this beautiful country, India, and I definitely want to visit there," he said. Season three of "Squid Game" will also feature Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, Lee David, and Roh Jae-won.

'Kathanar The Wild Sorcerer': to Aadu 3': 3D Wave in Mollywood

Mollywood is embracing 3D technology, with filmmakers exploring its potential beyond fantasy genres. 'Aadu 3' is venturing into 3D, showcasing this shift. Jonita Doda highlights the immersive experience of India's first 3D romantic film, 'Salmon 3D,' while Tovino Thomas acknowledges the challenges of 3D filming, emphasizing that content remains paramount, regardless of the format. (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Watching a movie in 3D is always an immersive experience, despite some critics. Coming to Mollywood, the industry seems to be shifting its gears to a new realm, and the most basic one would be 3D movies. Let's take a look at the 3D wave happening in the Malayalam film industry. 'Aadu' venturing into 3D Jayasurya and Midhun Manuel Thomas' hit series 'Aadu 3' is reportedly in 3D format. This shows how the Malayalam filmmakers are pushing the boundaries of 3D by not only limiting it to fantasy or fictional movies. Director Midhun Manuel Thomas surely would have seen the scope of storytelling via 3D, enhancing the theatrical experience; otherwise, a talented scriptwriter and filmmaker like him wouldn't be opting for such a format. (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'It adds a new dimension to the cinematic experience' - Jonita Doda In an exclusive conversation with the actress Jonita Doda, who has been part of India's first-ever romantic 3D film 'Salmon 3D' revealed that it adds a whole new theatrical experience. Talking to ETimes, the 'Salmon 3D' actress said, 'The USP of our film lies in two key aspects. Firstly, it is India's first-ever romantic 3D stereoscopic film, which adds a whole new dimension to the cinematic experience. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! Salmon 3D - Official Malayalam Trailer (Picture Courtesy: Facebook) 'Shooting with 3D cameras is a very tough thing to do' - Tovino Thomas Now let's move on to the production part of a 3D film. In a conversation with Mid Day, the 'ARM' actor Tovino Thomas said that shooting a movie in 3D is quite challenging. He said, 'Shooting with 3D cameras is a very tough thing to do. It takes more time and effort.' Coming to 'ARM', what the makers did was 3D conversion rather than shooting in 3D camera. He said, ''People won't be able to tell whether we shot it with 3D cameras or converted it later, because the technology has come so far. We already have clear guidelines on how to shoot for 3D conversion — there's a specific approach to follow, and our cinematographer was fully aware of that from the start.' Do all films require 3D? Well, the answer would be a clear NO! While 3D may enhance the theatre-viewing experience, not all stories are perfect that way. There may be several sequences added just for the sake of creating that 3D visual, and this would serve no purpose to the actual storyline. For a movie like 'My Dear Kuttichathan', 3D experience is well worth it. But if one were to pick a 3D format for a film like 'Drishyam', it would be a complete no and would feel complete injustice towards the content of the movie, unless there are some genuine reasons for adding 3D elements (hopefully there won't be any). Coming to the upcoming Jayasurya starrer 'Kathanar The Wild Sorcerer', it's quite sure that the 3D elements will work as everyone knows the storyline and how it can be perfectly suited for a 3D experience. Shooting in 3D or not, as we always say, the content of a movie matters.
