'Batting today is 'way easier' than 20-25 years ago': Kevin Pietersen after Joe Root's record-breaking knock vs India
NEW DELHI: England batting legend
Kevin Pietersen
has ignited fresh debate in cricketing circles by claiming that batting today is significantly easier than it was two to three decades ago. According to Pietersen, a noticeable dip in the quality of bowling across Test-playing nations has made life simpler for modern-day batters.
His remarks came just a day after
Joe Root
surpassed Australia's Ricky Ponting to move into second place on the all-time list of Test run scorers, behind only
Sachin Tendulkar
. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Pietersen wrote:

"Don't shout at me but batting these days is way easier than 20/25 years ago! Probably twice as hard back then!'
Known for his bold personality both on and off the field, Pietersen—who played 104 Tests for England between 2005 and 2013 and scored 8,181 runs at an average of 47.28—has never shied away from expressing strong views.
This time, he doubled down on the argument by pointing to a star-studded list of bowlers from the past, arguing that the modern game lacks comparable threats.
'Waqar, Shoaib, Akram, Mushtaq, Kumble, Srinath, Harbhajan, Donald, Pollock, Klusener, Gough, McGrath, Lee, Warne, Gillespie, Bond, Vettori, Cairns, Vaas, Murali, Curtley, Courtney and the list could go on and on…' he wrote, before challenging his followers:
'I've named 22 above. Please name me 10 modern day bowlers that can compare to the names above?'
Pietersen's comments come at a time when batting records continue to tumble.

Root's unbeaten 150 against India on Day 3 of the fourth Test in Manchester has now taken his career tally to 11,736 Test runs—closing in on Tendulkar's monumental 15,921.
Manchester weather forecast - Rain, chilly winds in store on Day 4 and Day 5
While many have applauded the consistency and flair of batters in the current era, Pietersen's comments have reopened the discussion on how much the evolution of flat pitches, changed rules, and fading bowling firepower have contributed to inflated batting numbers.

IND vs ENG: 'Are we still stuck in the colonial era?' - Irfan Pathan gives massive verdict on Gautam Gambhir vs The Oval pitch curator saga
Gautam Gambhir angry at The Oval pitch curator (Screengrab) The build-up to the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval has taken an unexpected turn, with a fiery exchange between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and pitch curator Lee Fortis grabbing headlines. The confrontation, which took place on Tuesday during India's practice session, was reportedly sparked by disagreements over pitch access and practice conditions. Gambhir, visibly agitated, was seen pointing at Fortis and shouting, 'You don't tell us what we need to do.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The incident required the intervention of India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who pulled Fortis aside to calm tensions before both parties walked away separately. Adding fuel to the controversy, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to call out what he described as a clear case of double standards. Reacting to an image circulating online of England head coach Brendon McCullum freely inspecting the pitch alongside Fortis, Pathan wrote: 'So an English coach can walk onto the pitch to inspect it? But an Indian coach can't? Are we still stuck in the colonial era?' Pathan's post struck a chord with many fans and former players, sparking a wider debate on the treatment of subcontinental teams and coaches on overseas tours. Curator Lee Fortis downplayed the incident, calling Gambhir 'a bit touchy' and refusing to provide specific details. 'You'll have to ask him (Gambhir) that,' Fortis told reporters when asked what triggered the altercation. 'We've got nothing to hide here.' India head into the final Test trailing 2-1 in the series, with the opportunity to level things after a heroic draw at Old Trafford. In team news, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, as reported by , is expected to make his Test debut at The Oval, adding to the drama of what promises to be an explosive finale.
