Josh Giddey at centre of NBA trade bombshell as Aussie linked with Steph Curry move

News.com.au2 days ago
Josh Giddey has been linked with a shock switch to the Golden State Warriors, in a move that would turn the NBA world on its head.
The Aussie is still waiting to get his next NBA deal as the Chicago Bulls play hardball on a mega contract extension in an off-season standoff that drags on.
The Australian finished his fourth NBA season on a hot streak, which resulted in his value skyrocketing heading into restricted free agency.
It was widely expected that Chicago would offer Giddey a contract extension worth $45 million per season, but that is yet to eventuate, with the Bulls hesitant to shell out that kind of money, offering him no more than $17m currently.
And now, in a bombshell twist, on Friday, reports have emerged that he could be about to get his mega payday, but instead of in Chicago, it would be in San Francisco.
The Golden State Warriors are currently locked in a stalemate with Jonathan Kuminga, and now there are talks he could head to Chicago, with Giddey potentially heading the other way.
Warriors officials are understood to be of the belief he could form a deadly two-punch combination with superstar Steph Curry as NBA Insider Jake Fischer revealed that an offer is currently being thrashed out.
'I can report that there have been multiple teams that have reached out to Josh Giddey's representation about having interest in Josh Giddey,' Fischer said on Bleacher Report's NBA live stream.
'Golden State is one of them. Golden State would be interested, depending on how the machinations could go in some type of Josh Giddey-Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade, to my understanding.'
If Giddey were to move to the Warriors, it would give them another ball handler and playmaker and free Curry up off the ball, while Kuminga would give the Bulls a young scoring wing.
Whether it eventuates or not, only time will tell. But Warriors fans are definitely sold on the proposition of seeing Giddey team up with Curry in the 2025-26 season.
'This would actually be an ELITE pick-up,' one fan wrote in response to the rumour on X.
'That duo with Curry would be lethal,' another said.

WNBA sex toy incidents: Crypto group admits orchestrating stunts

The WNBA's sex toy throwing drama has taken a bizarre new twist as an unlikely group claimed responsiblity for some of the 'stunts'. A cryptocurrency group has said it organized a spate of 'stunts' in which sex toys were tossed on courts at WNBA games, US media reported on Thursday. USA Today first reported that an unnamed spokesman for a group behind a meme coin called Green Dildo Coin had orchestrated at least some of the incidents, which angered WNBA players and led to at least two arrests. EXPLAINED: HOW DID THE WNBA DILDO THROWING START? 'We didn't do this because, like, we dislike women's sports or, like, some of the narratives that are trending right now are ridiculous,' the unnamed source told USA Today. 'We knew that in order to get a voice in the space ... we had to go out and do some viral stunts to save us from having to pay that influencer cabal, sacrifice our souls and the fate of the project.' On July 29, a sex toy landed on the court as the Atlanta Dream hosted the Golden State Valkyries. — The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) August 8, 2025 In the week since, similar objects have been thrown onto the court or into the stands at several other games, including another game in Atlanta. The WNBA confirmed that one person had been arrested in connection with one of the incidents in Atlanta and on Wednesday an 18-year-old man was arrested for throwing a sex toy at a Phoenix Mercury game which hit another fan -- who was at the game with his young neice. USA Today reported that the meme coin group spokesman said that Delbert Carver, who was arrested for allegedly throwing a green sex toy on the court at the end of Atlanta's home game against Phoenix, was not part of the cryptocurrency group. Nor was Kaden Lopez, who was arrested in Phoenix. According to the statement from the Phoenix Police Department, Lopez said he saw the trend on social media and bought his own sex toy to throw. 'Moving forward, we have a lot more pranks, but they're a lot lighter. They're a lot more tasteful,' the unnamed source told USA Today. The WNBA said in a statement on Thursday it was working with arena personnel to identify culprits and 'ensure appropriate action is taken.' The WNBA did not immediately comment on the reports of the cryptocurrency group Basketball The Sydney Kings have built a superstar roster for NBL26, with Matthew Dellavedova and Kendric Davis signing on, and captain Xavier Cooks concedes there is an added 'pressure' to see success. Basketball Josh Giddey's $46 million-per-season NBA contract demands could be met in an extraordinary twist that could result in a team up with basketball's greatest-ever shooter.

Morice Norris's head knock prompts early end to Detroit Lions-Atlanta Falcons NFL preseason game

An NFL preseason game between Detroit and Atlanta has been called off early after a frightening head knock to Lions player Morice Norris. Detroit safety Norris was hurt with 14 minutes 50 seconds left in the final quarter while trying to tackle Falcons running back Nathan Carter. The 24-year-old was attended to for about 20mins on the field before being taken in an ambulance to a local hospital, with the preseason game ending with 6mins 31sec to go after the teams made it clear they had no plans to continue playing. The Lions later said in a statement that Norris was stable and had "feeling and movement in all his extremities". The Lions led 17-10 when played was stopped and coaches Dan Campbell and Raheem Morris made the decision to not finish the game. "Raheem Morris is the ultimate class act," a visibly emotional Lions coach Campbell said. "We agreed it just didn't feel right to finish that game." Morris said it was "common courtesy" for the coaches to decide to not finish the game. "It was tough to watch. It was tough for the other team to see getting a teammate hurt that way," Morris said. "It was the right thing to do for Dan and his crew and his team and everything we had going on right there, I thought that was the right thing. "You never like to see anybody get hurt in any type of game or any type of way. It was a tough deal for those guys, a tough deal for us, a tough deal all across the board." Campbell said Norris's mother was with him at the hospital. Norris flew up to hit Carter low and the running back's midsection snapped the defender's head back after the mistimed hit, with Norris immediately unconscious. Lions quarterback Kyle Allen said it was hard to see a teammate in the hands of medical staff for so long. "When it's taking that long, with that many people and that many trainers around him, you're just hoping for the best," he said. "It's just awful. … You sign up for football and you understand the risk, you understand the injury risk. You never think something like that is going to happen. "At the end of the day we're all out here as football players. We may be on 32 different teams but we've all played football our whole lives and had our own injuries and been through it." When play resumed, Falcons quarterback Emory Jones took a snap and then held the ball as players from both teams stood at the line of scrimmage and the clock continued to run. Finally, with 6min 31sec left, an official announced the game had been suspended. Allen said the decision to not finish the game was easy to make. "I don't think anyone on that sideline wanted to play," Allen said. "We weren't part of that decision but you could look in anyone's eyes and see that." Though the decision to not finish the game seemed dramatic, there were two precedents from preseason games in consecutive weeks in August 2023. New England's game at Green Bay in Week 2 of the 2023 preseason was called off when Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden was carted off in the fourth quarter. after colliding with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a tackle. A week later, a game between Miami and Jacksonville was not completed after Dolphins receiver Daewood Davis was taken off in the fourth quarter, hit hard by Jaguars linebacker Dequan Jackson while trying to catch a pass. The two frightening injuries happened some eight months after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field during a regular season game at Cincinnati in January 2023. Hamlin has enjoyed a remarkable recovery and resumed football the following season and spent last year as a Bills starter. AP

NFL pre-season game suspended after sickening scene leaves player in ambulance

Detroit safety Morice Norris was in 'stable' condition on Saturday (AEST) after being taken from the field in an ambulance with a frightening injury that halted the Lions' NFL pre-season game against the Atlanta Falcons. 'Morice Norris is in stable condition and has feeling and movement in all his extremities,' the Lions said in a statement after the scary scenes unfolded at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. 'He will remain at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta overnight for observation.' Norris was attempting a tackle on Atlanta's Nathan Carter when he appeared to take an inadvertent knee to the head. He lay motionless on the ground for several minutes and was tended by medical staff from both teams as concerned players looked on. 'He's breathing, he's talking. It's good. He's got some movement,' an emotional Lions coach Dan Campbell said in comments on Norris's condition at his post-game news conference. 'Now they'll just run more tests.' Both teams agreed to let the remaining 13 minutes on the clock run out. The coaches sent players back onto the field but after the ball was snapped they stood together in a show of support for Norris at the 50-yard line. The contest was officially suspended with 6:19 remaining and the Lions leading 17-10. Campbell said he agreed with Falcons coach Raheem Morris on halting play. 'Raheem Morris is a class act,' said Campbell, who added that 'it just didn't feel right to finish that game.' Morris said the decision to let the clock run down was a 'simple' act of respect to Norris, his family and the Lions. He said it was 'tough' to talk to his own players after the game. 'There's not a lot of times that happens,' the Falcons coach said. 'I can't sit here and tell you that I have been through a lot of those or seen a lot of those. I don't think any of us have.' Campbell said Norris's mother was at the hospital with him and that several Lions players would also stay in Atlanta. Norris, 24, joined the Lions as an ungrafted free agent in 2024. He played in two regular-season games last season playing mostly on special teams and played in the Lions' playoff loss to Washington. He was re-signed by the Lions in January.
