Amid festive rush, flyover delay causes traffic woes
As the Onam season approaches, traffic congestion at the junction has worsened, with long queues of vehicles forming during peak hours, causing severe inconvenience to daily commuters.
The flyover project, aimed at decongesting the junction that connects key routes to Nedumangad, Varkala and MC Road, is seen as a crucial infrastructure upgrade for the region. However, local traders have raised concerns about the timing of the construction.
They recently submitted a memorandum to Vamanapuram MLA D K Murali, requesting a postponement of the piling and excavation work until after Onam, citing the potential disruption to their seasonal business.
Speaking to TOI, Murali confirmed the delay. "We understand the concerns of the traders during the festival season. The piling work for the flyover will begin only after Onam. In the meantime, utility shifting has already started, including the removal of electric poles and overhead cables," he said.
KSEB began preliminary utility shifting, which is being handled by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), the main contractor for the flyover project. The utility work is being closely monitored to ensure smooth execution without major disruptions.
While the decision to delay construction may bring relief to traders, daily commuters are bearing the brunt of the congestion. "It's frustrating to sit in traffic for 30 to 45 minutes every morning. We understand Onam is important for businesses, but this junction has become a nightmare for commuters," said Ramesh Kumar T, a private firm employee who commutes daily from Kilimanoor to the city.
Residents and commuters have urged the authorities to expedite the flyover construction post-Onam and provide temporary traffic solutions until then.

IT layoffs, short summer and city slump weigh on India's consumption
India remains a major driver of growth for global consumer companies, but consumption was slightly uneven in the June quarter, with urban markets weighing on performance. Not all city pockets saw a strong demand rise, and early rains dampened summer sales. CEOs of several global consumer goods companies pointed to softer consumer confidence and a sputtering growth trend in recent earnings updates, ToI reported. Dirk Van De Put, chair and CEO at Mondelez International , maker of Cadbury chocolates, told ToI that in emerging markets such as India, Brazil and Mexico, consumers are 'worried' about their personal finances and job security, even though the company gained market share in India during the quarter. 'Consumer confidence is softer in these markets... but emerging markets continue to be an attractive growth engine for us,' Van De Put said. CEO Noel Wallace said the company's India team needs to address urban markets more effectively. Colgate is relaunching the Colgate Total line in India, focusing on entry price points and increasing premium offerings. 'We're not pleased really with the performance we had in India, but we feel good about where we're headed in the back half (later part of the year). We have some higher-end premium innovation coming through the back half and into 2026,' Wallace told investors. The company is also addressing the ₹10 price point in India. While there are signs of recovery, a full revival across city markets has yet to be seen. Tax breaks, lower food inflation and interest rates have put some extra money in consumers' hands, but recovery has been gradual and urban markets still lag rural demand. Job uncertainties and layoffs in the IT sector, which employs a large share of the middle class, present further challenges and could slow the recovery. Beverage giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo were hit by a shorter summer season in the June quarter. Coca-Cola's consolidated unit case volume fell 1%, dragged down by declines in India, where a brief border tension with Pakistan also hurt consumer sentiment, as well as in Mexico and Thailand. PepsiCo's beverage business in India also saw a drop in unit volume, though its convenient foods business performed well. Live Events Procter & Gamble said that growth trends in its emerging markets business have been mixed. Turkey has returned to 17% organic sales growth, India is growing at 5%, and the Middle East remains challenging.

UGC to strengthen scrutiny on ‘Not Found Suitable' decisions in faculty hiring
The government is moving to tighten control over the controversial 'Not Found Suitable' (NFS) provision used in faculty recruitment across universities, according to a report by TOI. A committee set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) is expected to recommend that every instance of NFS be formally reported to the commission for review. Addressing misuse This step comes amid concerns that the NFS clause has been misused to block candidates from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) from securing academic positions . Live Events The issue has also sparked political debates, with the BJP accusing the Congress of historically manipulating recruitments under the NFS pretext, while opposition parties argue that vacancies have surged under the current government. The UGC committee, formed on June 19, is tasked with investigating the extent and root causes of the problem. Early findings indicate that many vacancies in central universities are due to claims of 'non-availability of suitable candidates' despite advertised posts. This has been a recurring concern in parliamentary discussions and other official forums. The panel will conduct a detailed analysis of university-wise and category-wise data to determine if NFS rulings have contributed to unequal representation of reserved categories. It will also suggest measures to bridge such gaps. According to the report, under the new oversight plan, universities must submit comprehensive reports whenever candidates meeting eligibility criteria are declared 'not suitable.' Government sources told TOI that they believe this enhanced review will uncover any biases, procedural flaws, and recommend appropriate actions such as conducting fresh recruitment drives or focused outreach to qualified applicants from underrepresented groups.

The complex also features a community centre with four shops designed to meet residents' needs and provide space for social gatherings. Sustainability was prioritised throughout the project. The complex meets the National Building Code 2016 standards and has earned a GRIHA 3-star rating for energy conservation, renewable energy generation and effective waste management. Overall, the complex aims to provide parliamentarians with a comfortable, functional, and secure living environment, addressing previous housing shortages.
