Delivery delays and empty shelves at Co-op after cyber attack

Some Co-op stores have been left with empty shelves as the major cyber attack the retailer is battling disrupts deliveries of fresh stock.
Stores are open and trading, however some were only able to accept cash payments on Monday and Tuesday – something the firm says is now resolved.
The disruption comes after the company admitted to the BBC on Friday the attack on its systems had resulted in 'significant' amounts of customer data being stolen.
A Co-op spokesperson told the BBC deliveries to its stores were impacted by the 'sustained malicious attempts by hackers to access our systems'.

'Some of our stores might not have all of their usual products available, and we would like to say sorry to our members and customers if this is the case in their local store,' they said.
Cyber criminals behind the attack claim to have the private information of 20 million people who signed up to Co-op's membership scheme, but the firm has not confirmed that number.

It has told customers visiting its website that it believes only members' personal data such as names, contact details and dates of birth – not bank details, transaction information, or passwords – have been extracted. Payment problems
Shirine Khoury-Haq, chief executive of the Co-operative Group, apologised for the breach in a message to customers on Monday.
'This is obviously extremely distressing for our colleagues and members, and I am very sorry this happened,' she said.
'We recognise the importance of data protection and take our obligations to you and our regulators seriously, particularly as a member-owned organisation.'
The attack on the Co-op was revealed only days after Marks and Spencer said it had been targeted by ransomware.
It suspended online orders and took down several services as it struggled to respond to the incident.
Meanwhile, Harrods said on Thursday it had been hit by attempted attacks from hackers.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned that criminals launching cyber attacks at British retailers are impersonating IT help desks to break into organisations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is meeting Monday with Trump at a golf property owned by the president's family near Turnberry in southwestern Scotland — then later traveling to Abderdeen, on the country's northeast coast, where there's another Trump golf course and a third is opening soon. During his first term in 2019, Trump posted of his Turnberry property, 'Very proud of perhaps the greatest golf course anywhere in the world. Also, furthers U.K. relationship!' Starmer is not a golfer, but toggling between Trump's Scottish courses shows the outsized influence the president puts on properties bearing his name — and on golf's ability to shape geopolitics . While China initially responded to Trump's tariff threats by retaliating with high import taxes of its own on U.S. goods but has since begun negotiating easing trade tensions, Starmer and his country have taken a far softer approach. He's gone out of his way to work with Trump, flattering the president repeatedly during a February visit to the White House, and teaming up to announce a joint trade framework on tariffs for some key products in May. Starmer and Trump then signed a trade agreement during the G7 summit in Canada that freed the U.K.'s aerospace sector from U.S. tariffs and used quotas to reduce them on auto-related industries from 25% to 10% while increasing the amount of U.S. beef it pledged to import. The prime minister's office says Monday's meeting will also touch on Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza, and that it hopes to welcome the Trump administration working with officials in Qatar and Egypt to bring about a ceasefire. Starmer plans to stress the urgent need to cease the fighting and work to end starvation and other suffering occurring amid increasingly desperate circumstances in Gaza . Also on the agenda, according to Starmer's office, are efforts to promote a possible peace deal to end fighting in Russia's war with Ukraine — particularly efforts at forcing Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table in the next 50 days. Protesters, meanwhile, have planned a demonstration in Balmedie, near Trump's existing course, after demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday to decry the president's visit. Discussions with Starmer follow Trump meeting Sunday with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry course. They announced a trade framework that will put 15% tariffs on most goods from both countries — though many major details remain pending. On Tuesday, Trump will be at the site of his new course near Aberdeen for an official ribbon cutting. It opens to the public on Aug. 13 and tee times are already for sale — with the course betting that a presidential visit can help boost sales. There are still lingering U.S.-Britain trade issues that need fine-tuning after the previous agreements, including the tariff rates Washington imposes on steel imported from the U.K. Even as some trade details linger and both leaders grapple with increasingly difficult choices in Gaza and Ukraine, however, Starmer's attempts to stay on Trump's good side appears to be working. 'The U.K. is very well-protected. You know why? Because I like them — that's their ultimate protection,' Trump said during the G7. Also likely to improve Trump's mood is the fact that the U.S. ran an $11.4 billion trade surplus with Britain last year, meaning it exported more to the U.K. than it imported. Census Bureau figures this year indicate that the surplus could grow. The president has for months railed against yawning U.S. trade deficits with key allies and sees tariffs as a way to try and close them in hurry. Here are the trade deals Trump has made ahead of Aug. 1 tariffs

After months of delays, President Trump's long-awaited global tariffs are slated to take effect at the end of this week. Trump on April 2 announced 'reciprocal' tariffs on dozens of other countries, using trade deficits to help calculate the tariff rate. But a week later, he lowered those rates to 10 percent for three months as markets reacted negatively, allowing time for countries to negotiate. As the 90-day window was nearing its end earlier this month, Trump sent letters to countries informing them of the new 'reciprocal' rate that, he said, would take effect Aug. 1. The White House has managed to secure some significant trade deals since the president's unprecedented sweeping tariffs were first announced in the spring. Trump on Sunday announced a trade deal with the European Union, setting tariffs at 15 percent for European goods, including automobiles — lower than the 30 percent rate Trump had threatened to impose on the EU next month. The EU will purchase $750 billion worth of energy from the U.S. as part of the deal, Trump announced, and agreed to invest in the U.S. $600 billion more than the current investments for other goods. Trump similarly reached a deal last week with Japan, setting a 15 percent tariff on Japanese goods — lower than lower the 25 percent tariff Trump had threatened to impose. Also in that deal, Trump said Japan would invest $550 billion in projects in the U.S. and would open its markets to U.S. automobiles, rice and other agricultural products. The Philippines agreed to a trade deal with the United States that would lower U.S. tariffs on its exports to from 20 percent to 19 percent, Trump announced last week. Trump had originally set a 17 percent duty on imports from the Philippines in April before warning that figure would rise to 20 percent last month. An agreement with Indonesia would also set a tariff rate of 19 percent on its imports. Trump announced an agreement with the United Kingdom in early May, in what is considered the first major deal struck since the president announced his sweeping tariffs in April. That agreement set the tariff rate at 10 percent, down from 25 percent. The U.K. is allowed to export 100,000 cars to the U.S. at a 10-percent tariff rate, as opposed to the 25-percent rate announced March 26, marking a win for the British car industry. Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to talk about the implementation of that deal when they meet Monday in Scotland. The US and China announced in late May the contours of a deal to stave off a trade war between the two countries temporarily. The U.S. reduced its tariff rate from 145 percent to 30 percent, and China reduced its rate from 125 percent to 10 percent. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are set to hold talks Monday for the third time this year, with The Associated Press reporting that China is expected to press for the U.S. to remove its 20 percent tariff related to fentanyl. Both countries have an additional 10 percent baseline tariff in place. The White House sent dozens of letters this month informing countries of what they should expect their tariff rate to be, come Aug. 1. Trump has insisted he would not further extend the tariff deadline, but Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday that the president would be open to continuing discussions even after the tariffs are in place. One in eight high earners with no inheritance ‘trapped by financial outgoings'

One in eight (12%) people with a salary over £100,000, but with no parental wealth to fall back on, feel 'trapped' by their current financial commitments, a survey has found. More than two-fifths (44%) do not feel that they are able to comfortably meet their financial commitments each month, according to the research commissioned by wealth manager Killik & Co. Despite their high salaries, nearly a fifth (18%) of high earners in this group admit that their financial commitments are causing them stress and anxiety. Over a quarter (28%) said that the cost of supporting loved ones is reducing their financial savings while 26% said their own personal financial commitments are impacting their financial cushion. The most common monthly financial commitment, aside from household expenses and utility bills, was insurance (66%), including health, home and car cover. Nearly half (47%) of those surveyed have commuting costs, and 45% have private healthcare or other medical expenses. Over a third (36%) have credit card debt to pay. This group is also largely focused on the short term, the research indicated, with the majority (56%) thinking only a year ahead when planning finances and only 3% planning more than five years in advance. Will Stevens, head of wealth planning, Killik & Co said: 'A high tax burden, loss of free childcare, family dependants and mortgage costs all stack up and make it difficult for even those on the highest salaries to build up financial resilience. 'If they are not due an inheritance, it's clear even those on six figures and above are struggling to build up savings to ensure longer-term financial stability for their family. 'Provided money is managed carefully, this doesn't need to be the case. Upweighting pension contributions, managing salary increases and childcare support, and seeking financial advice to ensure your estate is well structured from a tax perspective, can all help high earners avoid the common traps which block them from accumulating wealth.' More than 2,000 people across the UK who are earning £100,000 or more and do not stand to inherit money from parents and whose parents cannot support them financially were surveyed by Censuswide for the research carried out in April and May.
