'Messi Might Come To Al-Ahly': Mahrez Waiting For ARG Star To Step Foot In Saudi
Al-Ahly winger Riyad Mahrez has said that it would be a dream for the team to play alongside Lionel Messi, if he arrives in the Saudi Pro League, and he would like to imagine him as the playmaker with himself on the wing. There has been a murmur around Messi moving to Saudi Arabia over the past few weeks.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped transform the Saudi Pro League after joining Al Nassr as a free agent in January 2023. He believes that the tournament is amongst the world's top five leagues and is a superior product to Ligue 1 and Major League Soccer.
'Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course. Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40-degree weather and see. France only has PSG. The rest are finished," Ronaldo had said in December.
'No. I think the five big European leagues are ahead and then we can start to compete with the other leagues. We're not too far off, I think. After that, the goal isn't to be the best league in the world right now," Mahrez said earlier this month when asked about Ronaldo's statement.
'Those like me who have arrived are here at the beginning of this adventure; we're a bit like pioneers. We're helping them make this league stronger. And frankly, over my two seasons, I've felt progress in the teams, the coaches, the tactics and the organisation," Mahrez added.
After disagreeing with Ronaldo, the Al-Ahly winger was interviewed by CARRE, where he said that he and Messi would make a great duo.
'We heard from the newspapers that Messi might come to Al-Ahly. It would be a dream for us to play together… I imagine him as a playmaker and me on the wing. We would make a great duo," Mahrez said.
'There is no special protection for dribbling players. Maybe Messi would receive special treatment if he decided to come, but not me. I received a lot of beatings," Mahrez added.
Messi's contract with Inter Miami is up in late 2025 and Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahly are 'ready to do whatever it takes' to convince Messi to sign with them, according to reports.

Kranti Goud, Shree Charani must be given time as players, says Punam Raut
New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Young players Kranti Goud and Shree Charani must be given time and the team management and selectors should also keep faith in their skills as they are the future of the Indian women's team, says Punam Raut. Both Goud and Charani made their mark on the recent tour of England in which the Indian Women's team clinched victories in the T20I and ODI series. India will be hosting the Women's ODI World Cup later this year. 'Youngsters like Kranti and Charani are the future, but they need time and faith," Raut told PTI Videos in an interview. 'This is just the beginning for them. The experience they have gained in England will count in the upcoming matches." Charani claimed 10 wickets in the T20I series which India won 3-2 while Goud claimed six wickets in the series-deciding third and final ODI to give her side a 2-1 triumph. Raut said the exposure provided to young Indian players by the Women's Premier League has also made its impact. 'The way WPL has been going on for 2–3 years, a lot of emerging cricketers are coming up. The exposure they have got from playing with foreign cricketers has really helped (and) that experience has added up. We saw the result of that," she said. Raut, however, called for both the players to be given time and a long rope. '(But) this is just the beginning. I want the captain and coaches to have faith in them," she said. 'They might not perform well in the upcoming matches. It can happen, especially with the World Cup coming up in different conditions. But you should believe in them and give them time to move forward." Raut also praised India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for getting a match-winning century in the third ODI. 'It's a positive thing because she is the captain. And when the captain is in form, then he gets a different confidence. Such performances relax the captain and give her space to think and plan for the team," Raut said. Raut said India will have to maintain the momentum. 'When you play at an international level, the whole world watches you. Other teams are watching and preparing too. The upcoming competitions will be tougher. On the World Cup stage, everyone comes prepared," she said. While she aims to make her comeback, Raut also wants to become a coach. 'As long as I am fit, I will always want to come back for India. I'm really looking forward to this season," she said. 'I would like to go into coaching after cricket. I'm already working in that way. I try to share my experiences with youngsters — the challenges I've faced and how I've overcome them," she said. Alexander Isak To Return To Newcastle United Training Camp Amid Transfer Saga: Report
Alexander Isak will rejoin Newcastle United's training after a solo stint at Real Sociedad. Newcastle rejected Liverpool's £110m bid, but Isak remains keen to leave. Alexander Isak is expected to return to the UK this week and rejoin Newcastle United's training setup following a solo stint at his former club Real Sociedad. The Swedish striker was working individually at the Zubieta training facility in the Basque Country but is now preparing to report back to Newcastle's base, as per reports from The Athletic. However, most of the first-team squad, along with manager Eddie Howe, are currently in Asia for the club's pre-season tour, which includes a high-profile friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Seoul, South Korea. Newcastle Reject Liverpool's £110m Bid Isak's return coincides with a major development in his transfer saga. As first reported by The Athletic, Newcastle recently rejected a formal £110 million bid from Liverpool, who had expressed a strong interest in signing the 24-year-old this summer. The Merseyside club had initially made an informal approach earlier in July, suggesting they were prepared to go as high as £120 million, but stopped short of matching Newcastle's valuation, which is believed to be around £150 million. While Newcastle have made efforts to persuade Isak to stay — including offering him a new contract with a release clause effective from next summer — the striker's position has remained unchanged. Sources close to the club suggest Isak has made it clear for some time that he wishes to explore a move away from St James' Park. In a further indication of his intentions, Isak was excluded from the squad travelling to Asia for pre-season preparations. Instead, the forward opted to maintain his fitness privately in Spain, away from the spotlight, while continuing discussions around his future. Newcastle will return to the Champions League this season for the first time in two decades — a compelling prospect for most players, but one that may not be enough to keep Isak, who appears set on a move to a bigger European club. Newcastle have also attempted to lean on senior squad members to help sway Isak's decision, but to no avail so far. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
