'Highly Taxed EV, Made In China': Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams Tesla Launch
In a post on X, the Sena UBT faction leader questioned the presence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the launch event of the showroom.
"And for Maharashtra CM to inaugurate a car showroom/dealer store makes it more cringe. What are we celebrating? Entry of a glorified, highly taxed EV vehicle that is made in China? How is it contributing to India's innovation industry? The white man complex is real," Sena MP wrote on X.

In an earlier post, Ms Chaturvedi said that customers will pay more for a made-in-China car, and the government is claiming it as some "great breakthrough".
"India was aiming to bring the manufacturing of Tesla cars to the country for the domestic market; however, we have been made to believe we should be happy with a first showroom with made-in-China imported cars. Whatever duty is levied, truth is customer pays more for a made in China car and leaders in power make it sound like some great breakthrough," the post read.
Earlier on July 15, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed that if the Centre had not debated on customs duties, the Tesla showroom in Mumbai would have opened in 2021.
Speaking to reporters, Thackeray said, "It's a good thing that an electric car showroom is being opened. If the central government had not debated the customs duty, then the showroom would have opened in 2021 only."He added that it is due to the policy for electric vehicles (EVs) made by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in 2021 that the EV companies are coming to Maharashtra."The EV policy that we made gives EVs major support in Maharashtra, and due to this, many companies are coming here," Aaditya Thackeray said.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the 'Tesla Experience Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai and welcomed Tesla's arrival to India.
The Chief Minister said, "I welcome Tesla here in Mumbai. Tesla has opened an experience centre here, and it is a statement that Tesla has arrived, and it's a statement they Tesla has arrived in the right city and right state."
"It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being established by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra as the state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility policy. I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to do manufacturing in India," he added.

Seoul: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has said Samsung Electronics will manufacture the US electric vehicle maker's next-generation AI6 chip at its semiconductor plant in the state of Texas. Musk made the announcement on Sunday (U.S. time) on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate.' He added that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which has just completed its design phase, will initially produce the AI5 chip in Taiwan, reports Yonhap news agency. Musk also said Samsung, which currently manufactures the AI4 chip, has agreed to allow Tesla to collaborate in efforts to maximise manufacturing efficiency. Tesla's AI6 chip is designed to be scalable -- small enough for use in humanoid robots and self-driving cars but powerful enough for artificial intelligence (AI) data centre. Samsung Electronics said on Monday it has secured a 22.8 trillion-won (US$16.4 billion) order to supply semiconductors to a major undisclosed customer. In a regulatory filing, the South Korean tech giant said it signed a foundry contract set to be completed by December 31, 2033. The contract accounts for 7.6 percent of the company's total revenue of 300.9 trillion won last year and marks the largest chip order ever won by Samsung Electronics. The deal is expected to give a much-needed boost to its foundry division, which has long struggled to catch up with global industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). In its earnings guideline released earlier this month, Samsung Electronics estimated an operating profit of 4.59 trillion won and sales of 74 trillion won for the second quarter. In particular, operating profit failed to meet market expectations, mainly due to the sluggish performance of the foundry and the System Large Scale Integration (LSI) divisions, according to the report.

BYD runs India business remotely amid Indo-China tensions
Chinese car manufacturer BYD , which has already made its space in the Indian electric passenger vehicle market, is forging ahead with its attempts to expand in the country despite roadblocks from the government that are preventing the EV major from conducting key business dealings here. Like many other Chinese companies, BYD has been unable to obtain visas for its executives owing to the geopolitical tensions between India and China since 2020. Bloomberg reported that this situation has seen the EV giant resorting to holding board meetings and high-level business interactions in Colombo in Sri Lanka, Kathmandu in Nepal, and even as far away as Singapore. The report stated that Ketsu Zhang, BYD's managing director for India, has been unable to obtain a work permit since he left the automaker's local base in Chennai. This forced him to work from BYD's headquarters in Shenzhen in 2021 before moving to Tokyo this year. Such situations have created roadblocks for the OEM, claims the report, citing the reason that on-the-ground presence is particularly important for manufacturers, given the need for quick decision making, addressing productivity issues and establishing community ties. Despite gaining popularity, BYD faces operational challenges in India BYD has proved popular with the Indian drivers, as the company's sales numbers in the country in the first half of this year nearly touched the total units sold by the OEM in 2024. However, this has not removed the operational challenges the company has been facing in India. The report has stated that Indian officials have been clear that they won't welcome investment from the carmaker. It also stated that Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said earlier in 2025 that it's a no to BYD due to caution around the nation's strategic interests. India has already rejected BYD's $1 billion plan to build a plant in partnership with a local company. This leaves the Chinese auto company unable to qualify for reduced tariffs on imported EVs in exchange for establishing a substantial manufacturing presence in India, the report further stated. This freeze contrasts with the experience of Tesla. The US auto major's CEO, Elon Musk, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US earlier this year. Tesla opened its first showrooms in India on July 15, with deliveries set to begin as early as August 2025. Interestingly, Tesla doesn't have any immediate plans to establish local manufacturing, meaning it faces import taxes of as much as 110 per cent for fully-assembled vehicles.
