Mr India was originally conceived for Amitabh Bachchan before Salim-Javed's split, Javed Akhtar reveals: ‘I developed it completely on my own'
Recalling how the idea was sparked, he said that during a film's muhurat (launch), that was to be done by Amitabh Bachchan, the actor was not available in person. So, it was decided that his voice would be played at the muhurat. 'He had to do the mahurat, and because of some reason, they recorded the voice of Amitabh and played it during the muhurat shot. So, that gave me an idea — if this voice is so popular, so effective, why can't we make the Invisible Man with him? We wouldn't have to take his dates also. Most of the time, we could shoot and he would later dub his voice… That is how the idea started,' he shared.
He also recalled how he wanted to weave in a children's emotional angle, believing kids would be fascinated by the idea of an invisible man. However, the idea came to a halt after his professional split with longtime writing partner Salim Khan.
Returning to the development of Mr India, Javed recalled writing the story, screenplay, and dialogue on his own — but initially, there were no takers. 'I developed it completely on my own, wrote the screenplay, dialogue. People were like, 'Arey invisible man… arey ye effect… yeh iss tarah ki films thodi chalti hai… it's a gimmick… woh thodi hit hoti hai… pehli bani Mr X, Ashok Kumar was the hero… then Mr X in Bombay… itna badi hit nahi hoti aisi films.'' (People said, 'Oh, invisible man… these kinds of effects… these kinds of films don't usually work, it's a gimmick… they get a little popular, that's it… there was Mr. X with Ashok Kumar, then Mr. X in Bombay, films like these never become major hits).
However, things changed when producer Boney Kapoor came onboard. According to Javed, Boney liked the concept and wanted to use it to launch his younger brother Anil Kapoor alongside a big-name actress — which finally got the film off the ground.

Javed said that many believed that the reason behind his split with Salim Khan was his closeness with Amitabh Bachchan, but that wasn't the case, which is why he stayed away from working with Big B for the next decade. 'Many people thought, because I was very friendly with Amitabh Bachchan, because I was closer to him, so I parted because of that. So for the next ten years, I didn't do any film with Amitabh Bachchan. I had some offers, but I didn't take them because I didn't want this tag on me that I broke this partnership because of some support,' he said.
In the book titled 'Written by Salim-Javed: The Story of Hindi Cinema's Greatest Screenwriters' by Diptakirti Chaudhuri, this incident is revisited in detail. As per the author, Salim Khan gave a lengthy interview to journalist Anita Padhye for her Marathi book 'Yahi Rang, Yahi Roop' where he spoke about the same. He shared that the director duo presented this idea to Amitabh but the Sholay actor wasn't keen on it. Apparently, Bachchan believed that the invisible-man concept wouldn't work as his fans came to the theatres to see him. The writers believed that Bachchan's voice would be the star of the show, and as per him, this triggered the end of their writing partnership.

Amitabh Bachchan praised External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on the Independence Day special of Kaun Banega Crorepati. On the occasion of Independence Day, Kaun Banega Crorepati offered its audience a powerful gift with a special episode titled Independence Day Maha Utsav. The show brought together three fearless women officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force who had played crucial roles in Operation Sindoor, a mission that dealt a strong response to Pakistan. The patriotic episode wasn't just filled with quiz questions but also with moments of respect, inspiration, and pride. One such moment came when host and megastar Amitabh Bachchan praised India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, drawing parallels between his commanding diplomatic style and that of an Army officer. 'Tough Talk, Like a Soldier" During a round of questions that began directly from the sixth level, the contestants were shown a picture of former External Affairs Ministers Salman Khurshid and the late Sushma Swaraj. They were then asked to identify the next minister in sequence. The officers confidently answered: Dr. S. Jaishankar. Reacting with a smile, Amitabh Bachchan admitted that he often watches Jaishankar's interviews and is deeply impressed by his manner of speaking. 'He speaks so strongly and with such authority that it feels like he could easily be in the Army," Bachchan said. This candid remark instantly became the most talked-about moment of the episode, with viewers applauding the megastar for acknowledging Jaishankar's firm and fearless presence on the global stage. Fans on social media even hailed it as proof of India's diplomatic strength and Jaishankar's growing popularity. Heroes of Operation Sindoor Adding to the patriotic fervour were the three officers who graced the stage: Colonel Sophia Qureshi (Army), known for her exemplary service during United Nations missions. Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (Air Force), celebrated for her daring spirit in the skies. Commander Prerna Devasthali (Navy), who thrives on the challenges of the sea. These officers were instrumental in Operation Sindoor, where they played decisive roles against Pakistan. Their entry was welcomed with a standing ovation from the audience and from Amitabh Bachchan himself, reflecting the immense pride the nation feels for its women warriors. A Patriotic Celebration The special episode was a blend of knowledge, inspiration, and national pride. Along with the quiz, the show featured stories of sacrifice and courage from the three officers, interspersed with patriotic songs and tributes to the tricolour. A visibly moved Amitabh Bachchan remarked, 'It is an honour for me to share this stage with these brave daughters of India on this day." Shah Rukh Khan Gives MAJOR Update On King: ‘Insha Allah Will Be Done Fast'
Shah Rukh Khan's witty reply during #AskSRK wins fans! The superstar revealed an update on his next film King with Suhana Khan, assuring fans that shooting will resume soon. Shah Rukh Khan, last seen in Dunki, has left his fans eagerly awaiting his next big-screen outing. The superstar is set to headline King, a high-octane action thriller where he stars alongside his daughter Suhana Khan. The film, already touted as one of the most ambitious projects of his career, has now hit a slight roadblock due to health concerns. During his trademark #AskSRK session on X (formerly Twitter), a fan asked him when his next film would release. In his witty yet candid response, SRK wrote, 'Did some good shoot… starting soon again. Only leg shots then move to upper body… Insha Allah will be done fast. @justSidAnand is working hard to finish." While his optimism reassured fans, reports indicate that King's production schedule has been temporarily affected by the actor's recent injury. Did some good shoot….starting soon again. Only leg shots then move to upper body….Insha Allah will be done fast. @justSidAnand is working hard to finish. — Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk) August 16, 2025 According to Mid-Day, the filming has been delayed after SRK sustained a shoulder strain while shooting an intense action sequence at Golden Tobacco Studio in Mumbai. Sources close to the production revealed that although the injury is not life-threatening, it required medical attention abroad. SRK has since flown to the United States for precautionary treatment, and doctors have reportedly advised him to take at least a month's break. The disruption has forced the makers to pause schedules that were originally lined up at Film City, Golden Tobacco, and YRF Studios through July and August. The next phase of shooting is expected to resume around September or October, depending on his recovery. Despite the delay, expectations from King remain sky-high. The film sees SRK as a seasoned assassin operating within the dark underworld, while Suhana plays his protégé, training for dangerous missions. The ensemble cast includes Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi, Abhay Verma, and Raghav Juyal. Anil Kapoor reportedly essays the role of SRK's mentor and handler, guiding him through the perilous world of espionage. With international stunt coordinators on board, King promises edge-of-the-seat action on par with global blockbusters. Though unconfirmed, industry reports hint at a possible 2027 release window. Until then, fans remain patient, keeping their 'fingers crossed" just as SRK himself said. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
