Baker, Emily Mayfield surprise Oklahoma Sooners walk-on WR with scholarship
The Oklahoma Sooners have college football's most famous and most successful walk-on player of all-time as one of their alumni, former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield. He began as a walk-on at Texas Tech and then Oklahoma, before the Sooners put him on scholarship in 2014. On Wednesday morning, Mayfield showed some love to one of the Sooners' current walk-ons in a surprise announcement.
OU's team meeting on Wednesday featured a video message from Mayfield and his wife Emily. They were handing out the first of two Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation Walk-On Scholarships. This scholarship awards a walk-on player at OU with a $10,000 scholarship.
The Mayfields shared a personalized message to walk-on wide receiver Jakeb Snyder, telling him that he had been awarded the scholarship.
"We wanted to say congratulations,' Emily said. "Your hard work and mindset really stood out to us and truly spoke volumes. Staying late, running extra routes, studying film, and showing up every single day.'
"As a former walk-on, I know the grind,' Baker said. "No promises, just work. That's why I'm proud to name you, Jakeb Snyder, OU receiver, Oklahoma native and first-ever recipient of the Baker and Emily Mayfield walk-on scholarship.'
Snyder is entering his third season with the Sooners in 2025. He had played defensive back for each of the last two seasons before making the switch to WR this offseason. Snyder made two game appearances as a redshirt freshman in 2024, playing on special teams against Temple and Maine.
Prior to walking on in Norman, Snyder helped lead the Bixby High School Spartans to three consecutive state championships. During his senior season, he led Bixby with 53 receptions for 459 yards and six touchdowns while adding 55 tackles, including three for a loss, and four interceptions on defense. Snyder chose a walk-on role at Oklahoma over a scholarship offer from Navy.
The role of the walk-on player is still being defined in the NIL/transfer portal age of college football. Originally, it looked like roster limits were going to be capped at 105 total players beginning this year, before a new policy was put in place that allowed walk-ons already on the roster to be grandfathered in during the transition period. However, those roster caps will eventually be in place, limiting the number of walk-on players that teams can carry each year.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is heavily in favor of keeping more walk-ons on the team, and he told reporters in a press conference earlier this summer that some of his walk-ons practiced with no promise of a roster spot once the season started. They've now been grandfathered in, but not every walk-on across the country was that fortunate.
Players like Snyder and the other walk-ons the Sooners have on their current 111-man roster decided to stick around, despite there being no guarantees, and they were rewarded with the grandfather policy. Snyder now heads into the new season on scholarship, a testament to what hard work can accomplish.

Dodgers regain NL West lead from Padres as Snell shuts down his former team in 6-0 win
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Snell limited his former team to five hits in six innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers regained the NL West lead with a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. The Dodgers drew six walks over the first two innings against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease, when they scored five runs on just one hit. Teoscar Hernandez hit his 20th homer of the season in the fifth inning. Michael Conforto had a two-run single in the first inning for Los Angeles (70-53), which pulled even with San Diego (69-54) by winning the opener Friday. The Padres had taken sole possession of first place in the division Wednesday. Snell (3-1) was making his first start against the Padres after leaving the club following the 2023 season, when he won the NL Cy Young Award. He walked two and struck out three. Cease (5-11) gave up two hits but walked six in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs — three earned. The first three Dodgers batters of the game – Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Will Smith – all walked and scored in the first inning. Ohtani and Smith also walked in the second and scored when Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill dropped Freddie Freeman's flyball at the warning track in right-center field. Key stat San Diego made three of its first four outs of the game on stolen-base attempts, as Smith threw out Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts at second base in the first two innings. Up next Padres RHP Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.61 ERA) and Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.08) will face off Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series. ___

Colts Predicted to Replace Anthony Richardson With Heisman Trophy Frontrunner
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A little more than two years in, the Indianapolis Colts may be close to pulling the plug on the Anthony Richardson experiment. The Colts took a flier on the 23-year-old QB, who had just 13 starts in three seasons with the Florida Gators, with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft — and so far they've got very little return on their investment. Richardson missed 13 games during his rookie season between a concussion and tearing the A/C joint in his throwing shoulder, and he missed six games last season because of a combination of a hip sprain, a lower lumbar sprain and a benching for ineffectiveness. Given Richardson's injury history plus general concerns about his development stagnating because of the turbulent start to his NFL career, Indianapolis signed former New York Giants first-round pick Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract to push Richardson and compete for the starting quarterback job. Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski believes the Colts will have a top-10 pick and use it to take one of the draft's most coveted passers in LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. "A top-10 pick will likely signal the end of the current regime, with a new general manager and head coach being hired, which is the best time to marry them to a brand-new quarterback," Sobleski wrote. "In this case, Garrett Nussmeier of LSU provides the Colt with a polished passer from the moment he joins the team." Nussmeier, who is tied for the second-best odds (+900) of winning the Heisman Trophy according to ESPN, has started 14 games in his four years with the Tigers, taking over as their full-time starter last season. He's thrown for 5,772 yards, 40 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, including a breakout 4,052-yard, 29-touchdown season in 2024, in which he led LSU to a 9-4 season and 44-31 victory over BYU in the Kinder's Texas Bowl. "Nussmeier's insertion into this Colts offense, with the talent already on the roster, is a recipe for success," Bleacher Report scout Dame Parson stated. "He is a natural passer who will be coming off his second season as a starter for LSU. "He throws with good anticipation, accuracy and ball placement to maximize Indianapolis' talented group of pass-catchers that includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, AD Mitchell and tight end Tyler Warren."
