A little more than two years in, the Indianapolis Colts may be close to pulling the plug on the Anthony Richardson experiment.
The Colts took a flier on the 23-year-old QB, who had just 13 starts in three seasons with the Florida Gators, with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft — and so far they've got very little return on their investment.
Richardson missed 13 games during his rookie season between a concussion and tearing the A/C joint in his throwing shoulder, and he missed six games last season because of a combination of a hip sprain, a lower lumbar sprain and a benching for ineffectiveness.
Given Richardson's injury history plus general concerns about his development stagnating because of the turbulent start to his NFL career, Indianapolis signed former New York Giants first-round pick Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract to push Richardson and compete for the starting quarterback job.

Anthony Richardson Sr. #5 of the Indianapolis Colts warms up before the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on August 16, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.Considering Jones' tenure in New York was almost as forgettable as Richardson's has been, it wouldn't be surprising if the team was picking near the top of the draft and looking for another franchise QB next April.
Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski believes the Colts will have a top-10 pick and use it to take one of the draft's most coveted passers in LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
"A top-10 pick will likely signal the end of the current regime, with a new general manager and head coach being hired, which is the best time to marry them to a brand-new quarterback," Sobleski wrote. "In this case, Garrett Nussmeier of LSU provides the Colt with a polished passer from the moment he joins the team."
Nussmeier, who is tied for the second-best odds (+900) of winning the Heisman Trophy according to ESPN, has started 14 games in his four years with the Tigers, taking over as their full-time starter last season.
He's thrown for 5,772 yards, 40 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, including a breakout 4,052-yard, 29-touchdown season in 2024, in which he led LSU to a 9-4 season and 44-31 victory over BYU in the Kinder's Texas Bowl.

Garrett Nussmeier #13 of the LSU Tigers drops back to pass against the Baylor Bears during the first half in the Kinder's Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium on December 31, 2024 in Houston, Texas.Given Indianapolis' talent at every other offensive skill position, landing a talented passer like Nussmeier could be just what puts them over the hump from fringe playoff team to perennial contender.
"Nussmeier's insertion into this Colts offense, with the talent already on the roster, is a recipe for success," Bleacher Report scout Dame Parson stated. "He is a natural passer who will be coming off his second season as a starter for LSU.
"He throws with good anticipation, accuracy and ball placement to maximize Indianapolis' talented group of pass-catchers that includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, AD Mitchell and tight end Tyler Warren."

Stefanski likely to reveal Browns' starting QB for opener this week

CLEVELAND (AP) — Coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to announce this week the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. 'I want to get through the next couple days. But certainly that's something that we're going to do here sooner than later,' Stefanski said on Sunday about announcing his starter. 'I need to get the football team in here, talk to the players, those type of things.' The Browns were off on Sunday after their 22-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. They return to work on Monday with practices leading up to Saturday's preseason finale over the Los Angeles Rams mostly being geared like a normal game week. 'We'll give the guys a normal game plan as you would get ready for the game," Stefanski said. "We will do more competitive periods than we would say in the regular season, so we'll do plenty of Browns versus Browns in practice, as well as introducing carded periods where we'll be simulating the Rams offense and defense.' Joe Flacco has not played in either preseason game, but has seen most of the first-team snaps throughout camp as well as getting plenty of work in joint practices against Carolina and Philadelphia. The 40-year old Flacco is the only one of Cleveland's quarterbacks in the four-way competition that has not been sidelined because of an injury during training camp. Kenny Pickett has been mostly limited the past couple of weeks after suffering a hamstring injury on July 26. Shedeur Sanders missed the second day of joint practices against the Eagles and did not play in the game after suffering an oblique injury last Wednesday. Stefanski was optimistic that Pickett or Sanders could possibly return to practice sometime this week. Sanders got the start against Carolina and completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two TD passes. Dillon Gabriel, who did not play in the preseason opener at Carolina on Aug. 8 because of a hamstring strain, played the first half against the Eagles. In five series, he completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards. Three of the drives resulted in points while the other two ended with turnovers, including a 75-yard, pick-6 by Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba. What pleased Stefanski the most about Dillon was that he completed all six of his passes on third down. The Browns were 6 of 8 on third down in the first half. 'Protection was good. We were able to find completions. But those third down conversions were huge,' Stefanski said. ___ AP NFL:

Lions Fans React to Injury Update on Sam LaPorta

Lions Fans React to Injury Update on Sam LaPorta originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Lions are gearing up for another NFL campaign after winning the NFC North title in 2024. Unfortunately, the team just got some unfortunate injury news before the start of the 2025 season. On Thursday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced that third-year tight end Sam LaPorta has suffered an undisclosed injury. The injury is not considered "major," but the 24-year-old pass catcher is expected to miss at least a few days with the issue. "LaPorta will be down. It's not major, but he will miss a little bit of time here," Campbell said before the Lions' second joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. While LaPorta's injury is not considered serious, some Lions fans are sounding the alarm on what could spell future injury issues for the star TE. "I don't like this," one wrote. "He seems injury prone," another added. "This team is cursed, if it weren't for the injuries last year, they would have won the Super Bowl," another said. "Don't overreact. Just be right for Week 1," another wrote. LaPorta burst onto the NFL scene as an elite tight end weapon in 2023, reeling in 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season with the Lions. His record-breaking statistics regressed in Year 2, seeing him collect 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. The Lions will face off against the Dolphins in their next preseason matchup on Saturday afternoon. The team will kickoff its regular-season schedule with a matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sep. 7. News Analysis: Matthew Stafford's injury raises serious concerns for Rams as season approaches

Rams coach Sean McVay was not talking. Aubrey Pleasant deferred to McVay. And Stetson Bennett was so busy leading a comeback victory, he said he did not notice. No one in the Rams organization could answer these questions: How did Matthew Stafford's scheduled workout on Saturday play out? And was he at the Rams' 23-22 victory over the Chargers at SoFi Stadium? A team spokesman declined to comment, saying McVay would address the situation on Monday. Stafford, 37, is preparing for his 17th NFL season. Check that: He would be if not for a back issue that has prevented him from taking a single snap or throwing a single pass during a team practice. In late July, when the Rams reported to training camp at Loyola Marymount and Stafford's back issue came to light, the situation was cause for concern. For everyone, it seemed, but McVay. The Rams had a plan, he said. He was not concerned. Stafford would not practice for the first week, but he would be out there with teammates in Week 2. It did not happen. Nearly a month later, it still hasn't. McVay said last week that the Rams were 'trying to get our hands around' the situation. But time is becoming shorter. The Rams are three weeks away from the season opener against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium. Read more: Whose house? Rams and Chargers fans debate which team is the 'alphas' of L.A. Bennett has started preseason games against the Cowboys and the Chargers. Garoppolo led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl. Bennett is playing with the confidence he displayed while leading Georgia to two national titles. With a physically sound Stafford, the Rams would be regarded as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. With Garoppolo or Bennett... How much time Stafford would need to be ready for the opener is an open question. Three weeks? Two? One? No one questions Stafford's toughness or grit. Or his desire to win another Super Bowl. But for now, his physical condition and availability — and the Rams' prospects this season and beyond — remain in doubt.
