Florida basketball head coach Todd Golden made it clear during a Monday appearance on The Field of 68 podcast: Thomas Haugh is stepping into a major role for the Florida Gators next season.
Golden revealed that Haugh is expected to start at the three-spot for the Gators next season–provided forward Alex Condon returns for his junior year.
"Tommy (Haugh) is the consummate teammate, the consummate winner," Golden said. "He came off the bench for us, and then when Condo (Condon) went down with an (ankle injury) in the middle of the year, he stepped into a starting role and played fantastic. And obviously, Tommy didn't start for us but he finished most games for us."
Haugh, a 6-foot-9-inch forward from New Oxford, Pennsylvania, averaged 9.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 40 games played during the 2024-25 season. He shot 48.5 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three-point range.
Haugh also logged incredible performances late in the season, including a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds against Texas Tech during the NCAA Tournament.
Golden noted that if Condon returns, the Gators plan to start Haugh at the three, Condon at the four and rotate on of their bigs at the five to create matchup problems for opponents.
"We hope that we get (Tommy's) running mate back (Condon), and if we do, we'll start Tommy at the three, Condo at the four and of the other bigs at the five, and try to overpower people a little bit," Golden added. "Tommy, he's a definite NBA player. I'm really glad and fortunate that he's coming back for sure for the Gators next year."
Haugh, who posted double figures in 22 games this season and recorded five double-doubles, is expected to be one of Florida's top two-way players next season as the Gators push for another deep NCAA Tournament run.

Why 2025 is a season of intrigue for Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway

Florida football finally broke out of its multi-season slump last fall thanks in large part to the efforts of then-true-freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, who led the Gators to their first bowl victory since 2019 as well as an 8-5 finish overall. Suffice it to say, Lagway's heroics ostensibly saved Billy Napier his job. However, while the pressure has lessened a tad on the head coach's hot seat, the Orange and Blue have high expectations this year while facing what is arguably the toughest schedule among FBS teams. Napier has put his full trust in his sophomore gunslinger despite some injury concerns during the preseason. "This guy's got a lot of ceiling," Florida's skipper offers. "There's a lot there, fundamentally and overall football knowledge. The impressive thing about him is the mental makeup, the humility. He just shifts into this competitor. He goes to a different space as a competitor. It's not too big for him." With that said, ESPN college football reporter Chris Low recently took on the task of evaluating the intriguing aspects of all the Southeastern Conference's 16 starting quarterbacks, offering up the following for Lagway. The intrigue behind DJ Lagway "As a freshman this past season, Lagway had moments when he was everything everybody thought he would be when he came out of Willis, Texas, as a five-star recruit. He's got a great arm, ideal size (6-3, 247 pounds) and the awareness and escapability in the pocket to extend plays," Low begins. "Lagway wasn't the Gators' full-time starter until the last part of the season, after Graham Mertz tore his left ACL in the third quarter of a 23-17 overtime loss to Tennessee. It was in that game that Lagway showed his vast potential in a very hostile road environment. His 27-yard touchdown pass on third-and-19 to Chimere Dike with 29 seconds remaining tied the game before the Vols won in overtime," he continues. "Lagway had 12 completions of 40 yards or longer this past season and was 6-1 as a starter, helping lead the Gators to four straight wins to close the season." DJ Lagway's path to success "The lingering question with Lagway is his durability and whether he can stay healthy. He battled an injury to his throwing shoulder in the spring and was limited. Most recently, a strained left calf held him back. He didn't participate in the Gators' first scrimmage, but according to insiders, has continued to throw regularly and looked good," Low offers. "He also missed a game and a half this past season with a hamstring injury. Lagway also put the ball in some dangerous spots at times, but what freshman doesn't? The bottom line is if he stays healthy, he has greatness written all over him." Florida's DJ Lagway among The Athletic's most interesting college football people

The upcoming college football season is packed with intrigue, no doubt, as the nation's favorite gridiron gang returns to the field this fall. From players to head coaches to athletic directors — and even including members of the media — there is no shortage of characters to play lead roles in the 2025 campaign's dramatic unveiling. With just one week remaining before Week 0's opening kickoff, The Athletic's senior writer Joe Rexrode put together his list of the top 25 most interesting college football people. Among those selected was Florida Gators sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, who carries the weight of the entire program on his shoulders heading into his first year as a true starter. His late-season heroics last fall helped save Billy Napier's head coaching job while also snapping a streak of futility for the Orange and Blue. Expectations remain high for the gunslinger out of Willis, Texas, but injuries have unfortunately ruled the narrative surrounding him of late. "Unfortunately, some of the intrigue relates to Lagway's preseason injuries, and he's had a few of them dating to the hamstring he pulled last season against Georgia," Rexrode begins. "That's the only game the Gators lost with him as a starter, winning the other six, and there's plausible hope that he can turn the Gators into a Playoff contender and cement Billy Napier as the long-term answer in Gainesville." "He's a potentially special player. But he has to play. In less than a month, it's Florida at LSU, at night," he concludes. Rexrode's colleague Ralph D. Russo at The Athletic recently referred to the loss of Lagway as Florida's worst-case scenario. "Nothing is more important to the Gators' success than quarterback DJ Lagway's health, but something similar can be said for just about any team," Russo states. "The difference between living up to this ranking and falling flat against a difficult schedule comes down to whether coach Billy Napier and his staff are up to the task of getting the most out of the talented roster they built." Long story short: it all comes down to DJ whether the Gators succeed or fail. Whether that is fair or not remains to be seen.
