Kevin Harvick and his Harvick Happy Hour podcast co-host Mamba Smith have shared their thoughts on Denny Hamlin's car erupting into flames at Texas Motor Speedway last weekend.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made it to Lap 75 before his car became engulfed in flames. Harvick analyzed the situation during the latest episode of the podcast.
The 2014 Cup Series champion claimed:
"The flames were really strange, the way that they were almost like it was a fuel fire. It sounds like they broke a valve spring, dropped a valve, and then it exploded. I think this was the third race on that particular engine, based upon the feedback I got from Larry [McReynolds].

Co-host, Mamba Smith, added: "Firstly, I'm glad he's okay, because I felt like he was in that car for a long time for how much smoke was coming through."
He added:
"We haven't seen engines blow like this in a very long time. And, if they're going to blow, at least they're spectacular."
Harvick responded:
"Those margins of speed are getting closer together. When those margins of speed get closer together they wind up pushing things a little further so, finding power becomes a lot harder. It comes in smaller increments which means to push the tolerances and parts and pieces a little bit differently.
"But, we saw this - what I thought was a valve spring issue last year with the Toyota engines and they blew up three or four of them in a row."
He later continued: " I think that when you start hearing valve spring, that to me is terrifying."
Hamlin also addressed the incident on his Actions Detrimental podcast. The 23XI Racing co-owner stated:
"I haven't been in that spot a ton, but you just don't want to get burned.
"You can feel the heat coming from wherever it's coming from, but the smoke is the one thing that I don't want to get in my lungs and stuff like that. You got the safety vehicle people, they're spraying it with all the substance and whatnot. It's just that, but I was able to get out fine."
The 44-year-old added that he was not aware that the car was on fire until he stopped.
"I didn't feel anything until I stopped. A lot of it was because the wind was pushing it back behind the car. But the smoke got bad really quick. When I came to a stop, that's when the smoke started getting me pretty good."

The other Dolphins running back and I don't, I don't really like what I see for the guy behind Devo A Chan who's currently injured. So talk to me about Ollie Gordon. I thought you were gonna pump up Olly and then you hit me with Jalen Wright and I'm like, oh man, I'm with you, man. I mean, they're giving him, they're giving him every, they're giving him every opportunity to seize that RB2 role in Miami that today, August 20th, 2025, seems pretty damn valuable because what's going on with Devon Aan? Calf strain, calf injury, question marks around his week one availability and health. Like this is. This ain't what you wanna hear mere days away from the start of the NFL season. And like it or not, Ollie Gordon, every time he's been given an opportunity throughout the preseason, he's produced, he's flash, he's shown more burst than I thought Jalen Wright had over him. I would not look at Ollie Gordon's profile coming out of Oklahoma State and think Blazer, but when I'm watching him in preseason versus what we've seen from Jalen Wright, he does look like Raheem Mostert even though he ran a damn 4-6 at the combine. This is a player right now, you might say contingency, but the, the, the, the, the, the need to break that glass and press that button, grab that emergency alarm, it, it might be here sooner rather than later. This is a film take on Kyle Williams because, you know, you look at like the preseason usage, the route participation, he's not up there. He's not starting right now at this point. He's not somebody you should be drafting in redraft because he might, again, might not open as one of the starters, but man, when I watch him in preseason, I think he already looks like he belongs, Ray. He already looks like somebody that can beat pressman coverage, which that's what he did at Washington State. In his reception perception profile, an 82nd percentile success rate versus press. Like, he showed an ability to win quickly and do something with the ball in his hands, which I think stands out in this Patriots wide, wide receiver room. Like, I, I like some of these players and I know you're the king of the Keyshawn Bay fan club. I feel like you always somehow bring up DeMario Douglas on this show. I, I know you like these guys and I, and I like Stephon Diggs too, but, you know, let's just say something happens, we get some missed time in here somewhere along the way. I mean, God, we got, we got to get Matt Hollins off the depth chart here. This, this can't, this can't, this can't stand. But like, again, it's not a day one play for Kyle Williams, but man, I think this guy can win and separate at the NFL level. I, I'm, I'm really excited on what I've seen from him in the preseason so far. The film looks good. And I just want to get somebody here with Drake May that can grow and ascend, especially a quick separator like this. At some point, if Kyle Williams gets on the field, I think he, we will be talking about him on like fantasy waiver wire shows. Close
