The Thursday letters page is not impressed by Xbox's portable plans, as one reader agrees an Alex Garland Elden Ring movie could work.

Bigger than everything
Is GTA 6 really the most anticipated game ever? I don't feel that way. I haven't felt anything for GTA since I pre-ordered San Andreas. I was really hyped for that. Since then, I've been pretty let down by the series. Maybe in the future Rockstar will remake their older games, properly in the new engine.
I guess we don't know anything apart from it looks OK. Not the mind-blowing graphics some people are spouting about.
I hope they've redone the movement controls and shooting mechanics. These haven't changed since GTA 3 for goodness sake.
As for the fact it has cost so many hundreds of millions, what do you expect when they're basically making a Bad Boys interactive film?

GC: Trailer 2 got 475 million views in just 24 hours; it's easily the most anticipated media release of all time, never mind just games.

I really don't know what Microsoft is hoping to achieve with either this newly leaked handheld or their next gen one. We already know that these PC portables don't sell that well, so why do they think theirs is going to be any different? Because it has an Xbox logo on it? If things were that simple the Xbox Series X/S wouldn't be in the state it is.
The only thing that would make sense to me is if it was a portable streaming device, which I'm sure it will be able to do, but the thing that's out this year just looks like a ROG Ally with a different paint job, and those things are very expensive.
And the next gen device is going to have the biggest leap in technology ever, from one generation to a next? Not only do I not believe that for a second but if it does that's not going to be cheap either. Or they're talking about AI and it'll be janky rubbish that doesn't even work properly. None of that sounds like a good idea to me.

Oh hey, did you hear the amazing news? Sony just announced a brand new single-player game. A new IP that looks to be going back to their PlayStation 4 golden age, with an intense narrative, deep characters, and a lush open world to explore. I cannot wait, finally my purchase of a PlayStation 5 will be redeemed.
Hang on, no. My mistake. They've announced a new studio called teamLFG that is made of people that have worked on nothing but live service junk. I just don't know what's going on anymore. Why does Sony hate making video games so much.

Not right now
I've got an alternative take on that EA price annoucement: 'We wish we could increase the prices right now but our next two games are a bit dicey, so we can't really take the risk. Rest assured, as soon as we're convinced that people will once again buy our games no matter how bad they are, we'll start charging £80 for them.'
You watch, the second EA Sports FC gets back up to speed or Battlefield is a big hit they'll suddenly need to increase the prices because of the cost of making games or some other trumped up nonsense, even though they didn't need to this time, when they had to be more careful.
The idea that any publisher will miss the opportunity to increase prices when others are doing it is laughable. Ironically, at the end of all this, Nintendo will probably end up being the cheapest again.

GTA 6 is going to make so much money it's scary. I do think that the Reader's Feature at the weekend had a good point, in that it's going to be so massive it's just going to strangle all interest in everything else for potentially years.
GTA 5 is still in the top 10 for all formats and it's getting on for 15 years old. Just imagine how popular GTA 6 is going to be. It's not that it'll just white out a few months either side of it. If people are already only playing a small number of old games all the time they could be on GTA 6, and nothing else, for the next 15 years.

Wait and see
Interesting idea on what upcoming Switch 2 models we'll see. The problem with a Switch 2 Lite is that the reason the Switch 2 is bigger than the original in the first place probably wasn't a design choice, it's down to the demand for extra space inside the thing for the jump forward in technology… especially the thermals.
An OLED model is definitely a given, maybe with a marginally larger screen by cutting the bezels down like they did for the original. Also, with the cost of the console I can definitely see a TV-only version for a cheaper entry level device, which would be a new front for Nintendo. Dropping the portable hardware would save some cash in the manufacturing, especially now they've got a console that doesn't produce graphics that look like a blurry/jaggy mess on large 4K TVs.
As for pre-order, I'll wait for the OLED one a few years down the road… given how far away a new Zelda likely is and that a new 3D Mario is still MIA I want Nintendo to prove they are ready to keep churning out the goods following this generational jump.
There is also the question of third party support, multiformat titles will be noticeably inferior to PlayStation 5 so this thing will need more Monster Hunter Rises and Astral Chains to be seen as anything more than a first party machine. The Duskblood's could be a good start and Nintendo should be commissioning many more second and third party exclusive titles via its vast money pile. The rumoured Final Fantasy 9 Remake being Switch 2 first would be enticing. Again it'll take time, years even.
I guess my current (large) Switch backlog and Metroid Prime 4 will keep me sweet for a while yet.

Impossible mission
I have to say that the idea of Alex Garland making an Elden Ring movie is one of the least worst ideas I could think of, if they have to do it. They shouldn't, because a movie doesn't make sense given the way the story is, but if they have to this is probably the best way.
Either they ruin everything by explaining exactly what's going on or they annoy and confuse ordinary punters by not explaining anything. Maybe there's a sweet spot in the middle there, but I dunno. But if anyone can find it, Alex Garland probably could.

PS: Really looking forward to 28 Years Later.
Coming soon
Anticipation is at a fever pitch, especially with the excellent trailer and beautiful screenshots of Grand Theft Auto 6 that released on Tuesday. Since there's also a fair few excellent titles releasing through 2025 and beyond I'd like to take this time to list my 10 most anticipated titles.
10. The Outer Worlds 2 – an anticipated sequel and the continuation of the joy that is Spacer's Choice.
9. Doom: The Dark Ages – a medieval setting and the most ambitious scope in the history of the franchise? Day one on Xbox Game Pass.
8. Fable – another Game Pass title. I'm optimistic for a reawakening of a dormant fantasy IP, but cautiously wary. Peter Molyneux ruined this franchise once.
7. The Duskbloods – FromSoftware. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. A Switch 2 exclusive. Sign me up).
6. Crimson Desert – it looks stunning, and I will be pre-ordering this title. Exquisitely ambitious. Can't wait for this one.
5. Exodus – taking inspiration from Mass Effect. It certainly looks to be living up to the legacy. Ambitious in scope. I look forward to learning more.
4. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – a new beginning for Naughty Dog. Spoken as a fan, I'm glad to see a new development that isn't another retread of The Last Of Us.
3. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach – Kojima returns to the world of parcel delivery services and I am beyond ready. Bonus points to Higgs and his new look.
2. Ghost of Yōtei – Ghost Of Tsushima is one of my favourite games. I am deeply over the moon to see Atsu's story unfold
1. Grand Theft Auto 6 – Never have I ever anticipated a title as much as I have this one. The first trailer blew me away. The second one has rocked my expectations. I will lose myself to this game and I will adore every second of it. I'm the most excited, happy, in love, and deeply drawn that I have ever been. I can't wait for the privilege of playing this masterpiece.

Inbox also-ransJust saw a prediction that console prices (and I assume PC components) in the US could rise by 69% if tariffs go into full effect. All I can say is that the video games industry was nice while it lasted.

This story made me laugh, it's Capcom selling actual herb tea as 'power-ups' from Resident Evil. Strangely it seems you can't mix them though, which seems a missed opportunity.

This month's Xbox Game Pass roster is the start of a huge year for players

Xbox Game Pass is getting a major new drop of games, after a huge collection of titles were revealed to be on the way to the service over the next year or so A fresh batch of games is set to arrive on Xbox Game Pass, promising to delight both shooter and sports enthusiasts with the latest additions. Xbox Game Pass has faced some stiff competition in the gaming subscription arena. PlayStation has been dominating the game in recent weeks, turning a disappointing drop into a major surprise PS Plus reveal that offers players more Destiny 2 expansions and Another Crab's Treasure. ‌ This was followed by its own PlayStation State of Play as part of the massive reveals of showcase season, announcing big hitters like Sword of the Sea, Twisted Metal 3 and 4, and Resident Evil 2 and 3 set to join the service soon. However, Xbox has plenty more in store. ‌ Since the release of Doom: The Dark Ages, the service has significantly upped its game by introducing Metaphor ReFantazio in a May drop and offering a newly remastered Warhammer 40K: Space Marine on Xbox Game Pass. It's a colossal victory for players, and it appears to be getting even bigger with a substantial recent drop. Moreover, with the bonus announcement of a plethora of games set to join the service over the next year, it's going to be better than ever when they arrive. So, what exactly is new in the latest Xbox Game Pass announcement? Here's what you need to know. Xbox Game Pass update for June 2025 A significant collection of games is set to arrive with the new Xbox Game Pass update, as revealed in a recent blog post. The lineup includes games that will appeal to both casual players and serious gamers. Here's what's included in the latest Xbox Game Pass update: Xbox Game Pass Standard Baldur's Gate Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC EA FC 25 ‌ This is fantastic news for fans of Control, as FBC: Firebreak is launching simultaneously on PS Plus. This means you can assemble a team regardless of your chosen console. It's time to return to The Oldest House. Xbox Game Pass games leaving As always, a small selection of games are departing the service to make room for the newcomers. It's unfortunate, especially since an excellent sandbox game is being removed from the pass this time. Here's every game set to leave Xbox Game Pass on Sunday, 15 June: ‌ Xbox Game Pass' massive showcase roster You've seen everything coming to the service soon, but there's still a robust list of games set to arrive on Xbox Game Pass over the next year or so, as revealed at the most recent Xbox Games Showcase. It's an extensive and impressive collection of quality titles. Here's everything revealed at the showcase to be on its way to the service: Call of Duty Let's not mince words – this is a colossal number of games dropping into players' laps at no additional cost. Whether it's blockbuster hits like Black Ops 7 or the eagerly anticipated Hollow Knight Silksong, it's becoming increasingly evident that if there's a major game heading to Xbox, odds are, it's also coming to Xbox Game Pass – making a subscription practically indispensable for gamers wanting to keep up with the latest releases. The forthcoming year promises to provide fans with plenty to do, and in the face of fierce competition, Microsoft has demonstrated why its subscription service deserves recognition, not only because it essentially pioneered it in the gaming world, but because it continues to be top-notch. A massive influx of games is set to hit the service as if this month's Xbox Game Pass update wasn't robust enough. Brace yourself for a significant loss of free time when these games finally land – particularly with Super Meat Boy 3D. That one's going to be a challenge.

Cillian Murphy will be a ‘very dominant element' in third 28 Years Later movie, Danny Boyle teases

Cillian Murphy will be a 'very dominant element' in third 28 Years Later movie, Danny Boyle teases While the 49-year-old actor won't be reprising his 28 Days Later protagonist Jim in the upcoming horror flick, Murphy will appear in its 2026 sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and now Boyle has revealed Jim will have a much bigger part to play in the third and final entry in the 28 Years Later trilogy 28 Years Later director Danny Boyle has teased Cillian Murphy will be a "very dominant element" in the third film. While the 49-year-old actor won't be reprising his 28 Days Later protagonist Jim in the upcoming horror flick, Murphy will appear in its 2026 sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and now Boyle has revealed Jim will have a much bigger part to play in the third and final entry in the 28 Years Later trilogy. ‌ Speaking with Collider, the 68-year-old director said: "There's a story arc across all three films. The principle of this is what we sold to Sony. And they immediately said, 'Don't say it's a trilogy. We said, 'No, we are going to say it's a trilogy.' Because it is! We're not going to lie to people! ‌ "Not all the characters run through all three films, but some of them do. There's a character in this one, played by Ralph Fiennes, who is a massive part of the second film. "Cillian Murphy is an element in the second film and a very dominant element in the third film." Boyle added he and scribe Alex Garland had written 28 Years Later to be a story that is "influenced" by 28 Days Later, though would not continue the plot elements introduced in the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later - which was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and saw the Rage Virus makes its way across the English Channel and begin to spread across Europe in the final scenes. Article continues below Boyle explained: "What Alex and I decided to do was make an original film. But it's a story influenced by 28 Days Later. "But it does not follow what happened in 28 Weeks Later, where the virus got into Europe. For story reasons, we suggested that Europe had driven the virus back across the channel. Then they could isolate the island of Britain and let it die out." Boyle teased the 28 Years Later trilogy would have "ambitious storytelling", though suggested it would not be on the same scale as the Mission: Impossible series. ‌ He said: "It's ambitious storytelling! It's not ambitious like Mission: Impossible scale. But it's ambitious in terms of its intellectual ideas and its emotional reach through the genre. It's a wonderful genre because it's got that flex in it. If you've got enough horror in it ..." 28 Years Later - which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Jack O'Connell - follows a family of survivors navigating a decaying Britain as the Rage Virus persists, and is now more dangerous than ever. As old and new allies collide, humanity's last hope may lie in confronting the horrors of the past. Article continues below While Boyle and Garland have a clear plan for the 28 Years Later trilogy, the filmmaker revealed the scribe had initially penned a "more traditional sequel" to 28 Days Later. He said: "Alex originally wrote a script that was more a traditional sequel. Like a 'weaponise the virus' type idea. You know, the military or the government, or a corporation weaponises the virus. Classic Alien-type idea, where you keep the thing going by doing that. "We just didn't want to do that. There was something fresher we could tackle."

Call Of Duty is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 promises Activision and Microsoft

Despite no sign of a Switch 2 launch for this year's Call Of Duty, Activision swears it's still working on bringing its flagship shooter series to Nintendo fans. Back when Microsoft was trying to push through its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, one of its key arguments was that the buyout would allow for the Call Of Duty games to be released on Nintendo hardware. Microsoft even signed a 10-year deal to bring the series to the then unannounced Nintendo Switch 2, promising future games would launch on Nintendo's platform the same day as the Xbox and PlayStation versions, and 'with full feature and content parity.' And yet Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, the first new entry in a post-Switch 2 world, is not scheduled to launch for Nintendo's console. We're clearly not the only one to notice this oddity as Activision has felt the need to clarify that it does intend to follow through on Microsoft's promises. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Activision is keeping exact details to a minimum, only telling Eurogamer that 'We're committed to getting the franchise on Switch. Both teams [are] working on it. Will share details when ready.' This leaves it vague as to whether Black Ops 7 will be first in line for a Switch 2 port at a later date or whether Activision will prioritise bringing its backlog to the platform. Either way, it's not exactly the simultaneous day one support Microsoft initially promised. It's also unclear if Activision intends on bringing the Call Of Duty games to the original Switch, but that seems unwise. Modern Call Of Duty games are graphically demanding, so they'd be better suited to the more powerful Switch 2. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Activision's statement comes after Kotaku also reported that Microsoft and Nintendo are still planning on getting Call Of Duty on Nintendo hardware, with an announcement coming in the future. More Trending It may be that Nintendo wants any sort of announcement reserved for one of its Nintendo Directs, rather than an Xbox showcase. A new Nintendo Direct is expected later this month, since the company typically holds one in June, although nothing formal has been confirmed by Nintendo. Whether there's actually any demand for Call Of Duty on Switch 2 remains to be seen and it was very obvious that Microsoft's comments during the Activision Blizzard acquisition (which included newspaper ads and advertising on the Tube) was purely for their own benefit. Call Of Duty games have appeared on Nintendo consoles plenty of times before, including the GameCube, Wii, and Wii U – as well as no less than five entries on the DS handheld. The reason there's no Call Of Duty on the Switch seems to be simply because previous entries haven't sold particularly well on Nintendo formats, and so it was no longer worth the effort of trying to port them.
