KLIA drug busts uncover RM2.65m in cannabis, ecstasy and meth
KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said that on April 17, a man was arrested for trying to smuggle out 14.65kg of cannabis buds worth almost RM1.44 million in his checked baggage on a flight to a European country.
He said the man was subjected to a baggage inspection after his travel was blocked by the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) due to a blacklist record.
'During the baggage scan, the man attempted to flee but was apprehended by Customs personnel.
'The inspection found that the cannabis buds were packed in vacuum-sealed plastic to avoid detection,' he told a press conference yesterday.
Zulkifli said on May 16, Customs found 5.31kg of ecstasy worth almost RM900,000 that was being smuggled in through a consignment at a cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone.
He said the drugs, believed to have originated from a European country, were packaged and declared as laptop components.
Then, on May 24, he said that 10.18kg of syabu, worth nearly RM300,000, concealed in a consignment along with clothing, was also intercepted.
He said investigations into both drug shipments are underway, but face obstacles as the smugglers were likely using fake company names and addresses.
'We have gone to the (premises) as declared in the consignment information, but the company either does not exist or is using someone else's address,' he said. — Bernama

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 11 — The owner of a hardware shop on Jalan Bertam Perdana in Kepala Batas on the mainland has been released on police bail after having his statement recorded for allegedly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down in front of his premises. He gave an assurance that police would be transparent in their investigations. 'Police investigations found that the shop owner hoisted the flag upside down, while one of his workers stood beside him recording the incident. However, a video of the incident has gone viral,' he said. On claims that certain quarters intended to hold a demonstration over the matter, Anuar confirmed that police had received information about the planned protest, initially scheduled to be held in front of the premises today. Education Ministry orders safety audit of all schools after Zara Qairina dorm tragedy
KUALA LUMPUR — The Education Ministry today said it will carry out an immediate safety audit of all schools, including fully residential institutions and hostels, with findings to be presented to the ministry's top management within three months. In a press statement, the ministry said the audit will focus on compliance with safety-related SOPs. 'The existing complaint system, including the Anti-Bullying Portal, will be reformed,' it said. 'It will be simplified and will include an anonymous reporting option to protect the identities of complainants and witnesses,' it added. The move follows public outrage over the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school dormitory in Sabah. Her body was later exhumed for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying, and thousands have rallied for a transparent investigation. The ministry said it will establish a safety reform committee comprising academics, non-governmental organisations, experts from various fields, police, and representatives from the Parent, Community and Private Sector Involvement network. It also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on bullying, saying offenders may face suspension or expulsion, while administrators, teachers and education officers who fail to manage complaints according to guidelines will face disciplinary action. A new intervention programme called Bangkit Bermaruah will be introduced for students suspended from school, focusing on community service and character development. The ministry said psychosocial support will be strengthened at every level, with guidance and counselling teachers playing a key role in prevention and intervention. It urged all parties to work together to tackle bullying in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, adding that creating a safe school environment is a shared responsibility.

MOE denies shielding parties in school bullying cases, vows full cooperation in Zara probe
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning.
