Colts LB Zaire Franklin (ankle) injury update: Returns to practice on a limited basis
Franklin, a Pro Bowler last missed the first week of practices at Grand Park as he continued to recover from offseason surgery to clean up his left ankle.
The Colts decided to avoid putting Franklin on the physically unable to perform list, reasoning that the middle linebacker would be back soon.
Franklin was back in uniform for the first time on Saturday, although he's clearly still working his way back. The Colts middle linebacker went through positional drills, but he did not play in a team setting.
'He's really done a great job with the meeting time,' defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said. 'He knows what's going on, he knows what to do.'
Franklin, who has recorded more than 166 tackles in each of the past three seasons, is the only proven player at linebacker for the Colts, and Indianapolis would like to have its defensive leader on the field as the Colts install the scheme.
'It's a little bit different,' Anarumo said. 'You've got your helmet on, you're standing in front of the huddle and you're making the calls.'
Former Cincinnati linebacker Joe Bachie has been vital in Franklin's absence, stepping into the middle linebacker spot and providing a voice that already has plenty of experience in Anarumo's defense.
Bachie spent most of his Bengals career as a special teamer, but he has looked good in the linebacker spot, particularly in coverage.
'Joe's done a good job, had another interception today,' Anarumo said. 'I have the utmost confidence in Joe.'
But even Bachie knows that as soon as Franklin's back, he will be the man in the middle for Indianapolis.
Saturday's return to individual drills was the next step.
'The fact that he's back to the point he's at from a rehab standpoint, I'm pleased,' Anarumo said. 'I'm not worried about him picking it up and moving forward.'

Steelers sign QB Logan Woodside, OL Andrus Peat
The Steelers announced on Thursday that the club has signed quarterback Logan Woodside and offensive lineman Andrus Peat. Woodside provides depth at a position that got thinner with rookie quarterback Will Howard's recent hand injury. While head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Thursday that Howard may be able to get back at some point during training camp, Woodside is healthy and could potentially play as soon as this weekend. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith previously coached Woodside with the Titans and Falcons. He's appeared in 13 career regular-season games, completing 4-of-7 passes for 34 yards with an interception. Peat, 31, spent last season with the Raiders, appearing in 15 games with one start. A Saints first-round pick in 2015, Peat has appeared in 126 career games with 103 starts. He was a Pro Bowler in 2018, 2019, and 2020. As corresponding moves, the Steelers waived long snapper Tucker Addington and guard Nick Broeker.

Former Saints first-round draft pick Andrus Peat attempting NFL comeback with Steelers
Three-time Pro Bowler, longtime starter signs with Pittsburgh Former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl offensive lineman Andrus Peat has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced the move on Thursday morning, per PennLive's Nick Farabaugh. Peat, 31, is expected to fortify a thin and questionable offensive line tasked with protecting veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Saints selected Peat with the 13th overall choice in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL draft. Despite having played left tackle at Stanford, Peat started just eight games at tackle as a rookie, and he struggled with consistency over his first few years on both the left and right sides. When the Saints moved him inside to guard, Peat responded with three straight seasons as a Pro Bowl alternate from 2018 to 2020. Peat was moved back to left tackle during the 2023 season when it became clear Trevor Penning couldn't hold it down, and did well over 12 starts. During a nine-year career with New Orleans, Peat appeared in 111 regular season games with 102 starts. Injuries were a frequent problem for him. Andrus Peat was with the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He appeared in 15 games but made only one start, and played a career-low 6% of the team's offensive snaps. Peat will now have an opportunity to resurrect his career in Pittsburgh and could even compete for a starting role, most likely at guard, while bringing some versatility to play tackle or inside.
