Report: WWE's Mindset Behind Placing Main Roster PLEs Against AEW PPVs
It was reported earlier this week that WWE has plans to run a yet-to-be-announced premium live event on September 20 to go head-to-head with AEW All Out. Later in the week, it was reported that WWE is also interested in changing the date of John Cena's retirement match to go head-to-head with AEW Worlds End.
For a company that claims that AEW isn't competition, why the sudden, drastic change in strategy?
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is in the process of delivering a 'major full court press' against AEW with additional assistance from TNA to hurt their overall business.
'They (WWE) really want TNA to become the other promotion because they can control TNA,' Dave Meltzer said. 'And it's a—this is a major full court press, —They just want this guy (Tony Khan) out of the box. And they know that if the numbers stay good, that he's going to get a renewal at a much bigger number, just like they did, and a number that will make him increase.
'It's already very profitable. The number will make him incredibly profitable, and they'll never get away with him, you know, away from him or anything like that. So they feel that they need to make sure this is the last contract.' [H/T: WrestlePurists]
Will John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar negatively impact AEW All Out next month?
Meltzer also spoke on the upcoming unnamed WWE premium live event going head-to-head with All Out, with a main event attraction of John Cena versus Brock Lesnar.
'It is [John] Cena and Brock Lesnar on September 20th,' Dave Meltzer said. 'I think that's very clear now. And that's going to go head-to-head with All Out in Toronto. And you know what the effects of there are, we don't know. The one thing we do know is that for All In: Texas, it didn't hurt at all, and it probably hurt NXT a lot worse.
'Now, when it's main roster pay-per-view with Brock Lesnar against John Cena head to head with AEW, or will AEW go to the afternoon, or what? I don't know what Tony Khan's response is going to be. Obviously, the last time he moved to the afternoon, he can easily do that again. Wouldn't be that difficult to move Toronto to the afternoon. It's probably beneficial to do that. But we'll see.' That suggests a new wrinkle in the show's mission. The original concept behind this 'Evening News' iteration was to emphasize more feature and enterprise reporting. In its earliest weeks, even CBS News' Washington bureau veterans tried to examine the effects of Trump-era policies on people in places like Baltimore or Canada. And yet, critics complained that the show was at times giving short shrift to breaking headlines. The format tweak could potentially give 'Evening News' a shot of the latest headlines while still leaving some room for the distinct elements it brings to the mix. Speculation on 'Evening News' has grown since the disclosure that its current executive producer, Guy Campanile, would leave the show and return to his former home, '60 Minutes,' where he has long worked as a producer. One of the concepts behind the new 'Evening News' was to adopt some of the spirit of '60,' which generates its own headlines by pursuing stories both tied to headlines and completely disconnected from them. But evening-news audiences, accustomed to a format that has worn well for many decades, didn't bite. Approximately 3.74 million viewers watched 'CBS Evening News' for the five-day period ended August 4, according to Nielsen. CBS News executives had hoped their new 'Evening News' might pick up viewers as Tom Llamas picked up the reins at NBC following a decision by Lester Holt to step away from the 'Nightly' role. NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared that, after renewed contract negotiations and Hendrickson returning to Bengals practice, the team is now open to trading last season's league-leader in sacks. Peliserro says that no deal is close, but the Bengals have shifted their stance after initially having no interest in moving on from Hendrickson. The Colts have been linked to Hendrickson ever since the situation went sour with his current team. Indy's defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo, worked with Hendrickson for four seasons, helping him hit the 17.5 sack mark in each of the last two seasons. NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared that Indy is among the teams who have expressed interest in Hendrickson, adding that the Bengals' desired return is not expected to be cheap, asking for at least an 'impact player' as compensation. < This report isn't exactly news when you consider the strength of Anarumo and Hendrickson's partnership on the field. But the Colts have a plethora of pass rushers of their own already who they believe can make an impact, including Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu and rookie JT Tuimoloau. Still, general manager Chris Ballard tends to be aggressive when pursuing pass rush. Previously in his tenure, he's made trades for franchise cornerstone DeForest Buckner, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and signing Samson Ebukam as a free agent back in 2023. In the return for Ngakoue, a player requested by then-defensive coordinator Gus Bradley due to schematic familiarity, included a player in cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. So, Ballard is no stranger to being aggressive for a player he wants. But with the depth the Colts currently have on the edge, the price may be a bit too high to go after Hendrickson.

Orioles promote top prospect Samuel Basallo for MLB debut
HOUSTON (AP) — Baltimore's top prospect Samuel Basallo will make his MLB debut Sunday after the Orioles selected his contract from Triple-A Norfolk. Basallo, rated Baltimore's No. 1 prospect and the No. 8 prospect in baseball by is a catcher and first baseman, but was batting sixth and serving as the team's designated hitter Sunday in the series finale against the Astros. 'This is the first big Latin American signing that we've had that shows up and it's a really good one,' Baltimore interim manager Tony Mansolino said. 'So we're excited about him. We expect him to be competitive and do well.' His promotion comes a day after the team brought up No. 3 prospect outfielder Dylan Beavers. Basallo, a 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic, hit .270 with 23 homers and 67 RBIs in 76 games for Norfolk this season. He will be the team's backup catcher behind star Adley Rutschman and get work at first base. 'Adley will function as our No. 1 catcher because that's what he is,' Mansolino said. 'He's a really good catcher. Basollo will function as the No. 2 catcher, catch day games, Adley won't catch four in a row, things like that.' Mansolino added that Basollo would start at catcher Monday night at Boston and that he'd get him in the lineup at first base during the team's next homestand. Also on Sunday, the Orioles reinstated OF Colton Cowser from the 7-day concussion list and optioned OF Daniel Johnson and 1B/OF Ryan Noda to Norfolk.
