
Nike's price hike triggers similar moves from Adidas and Puma
Both German brands had previously signaled their reluctance to initiate price hikes, opting instead to monitor competitor behavior in a volatile market.
'We should probably expect a similar decision from both Adidas and Puma because this is not Nike-specific—it's an industry-wide issue. Everyone will be affected by these tariffs,' Krankowski added.
President Donald Trump has imposed a blanket 10% tariff on all imports and a steeper 30% tariff on Chinese goods. Vietnam—a key manufacturing hub for sportswear—may also face a renewed 46% tariff as early as July, which could further pressure brands.
Nike described its price adjustments as part of its regular seasonal planning and did not specifically mention tariffs.
Puma stated on Thursday that it is in discussions with U.S. retail partners but has not finalized any pricing changes. Adidas did not respond to a request for comment.
'Historically, when the leading brand adjusts its prices, competitors tend to follow suit shortly thereafter,' said Federico Borin, an analyst at Janus Henderson.
How much brands raise prices will depend on their assessment of U.S. consumer tolerance—a factor shaped by brand strength and product demand.
Adidas, which has seen strong demand for retro models like the $100 Samba and $120 Gazelle, is better positioned to implement increases, said Simon Jaeger, portfolio manager at Flossbach von Storch in Cologne, Germany, which holds shares in both Adidas and Nike.
Jaeger noted that Nike's hikes remain moderate but expressed concern over the broader U.S. retail climate: 'What concerns me more is that the U.S. consumer in general is not as strong as a couple of years ago.'
According to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers, consumer sentiment declined further in May, while one-year inflation expectations increased.
Given weakening demand, sportswear companies will need to manage retailer inventories with caution to avoid oversupply and markdowns, Jaeger added.
Puma, which has faced slowing U.S. sales, may have less room to maneuver, Krankowski said.
The brand aims to sell 4 million to 6 million pairs of its $100 Formula 1-inspired Speedcat sneakers this year, but underwhelming performance has cast doubt on its ability to support higher prices.
'Puma doesn't have a major first-mover advantage right now, especially since other brands are capturing more momentum,' Krankowski said.
Higher-end brands are also adjusting strategies in response to Nike's move.
Swiss brand On, which sells running shoes starting at $130, plans to raise prices on select U.S. products beginning in July. The company stated that this move aligns with its ambition to be the 'most premium' global sportswear label and is not directly tied to tariffs.

Beyoncé-worn fashion upstart Farm Rio raises prices, slows exports to US
A Brazilian fashion company known for colorful prints sported by celebrities, including Justin Bieber and Beyoncé, is selectively raising prices to cushion the impact of tariffs while scaling back exports to the US. Azzas 2154 SA, owner of the Farm Rio brand, has already increased some prices in the US and is considering shifting parts of its production to Europe from China, chief executive officer Alexandre Birman said during an interview at Bloomberg's headquarters in New York. 'We don't know where tariffs will stop, but we've temporarily slowed US-bound imports,' Birman said. Azzas, one of Brazil's largest apparel exporters, is navigating turbulence in both the US and its home market, where high interest rates have fueled concerns about demand. Globally, sales for mid-tier fashion-focused brands have largely held up, but companies have warned that the outlook for the second half is unclear. Brazil's apparel sales have remained strong so far this year, but higher tariffs could hinder Azzas' international expansion. Still, Birman sees opportunity in Brazilian footwear manufacturing as companies seek alternative sourcing countries to avoid US duties. 'If tariffs on Chinese goods rise above 50%, we become competitive,' he said. 'In that case, we'd need to accelerate investments to expand local output, as China's production quality has improved significantly in recent years.' The US hiked tariffs to as high as 145% before scaling back to 30% for 90 days as the countries worked toward an agreement. US President Donald Trump has also raised tariffs for countries across the board and threatened the EU with a levy of 50% if no deal is reached. US states and small businesses are challenging the levies at the US Court of International Trade, which had previously ruled against the tariffs. Although a federal appeals court has temporarily allowed them to remain in effect, the future of US trade policy will depend on a mix of court decisions and ongoing negotiations with foreign governments. In subsequent comments to Bloomberg, Birman said that Trump's policies are causing uncertainty. If duties continue to rise, Azzas may move apparel production to Turkey or Portugal — a shift that would also support the European rollout of its Farm Rio brand. The company currently has a limited number of stores in the region. It's also looking to expand in the Middle East, Mexico and South America. The Farm Rio brand has six stores in the US and more than 100 in Brazil. Birman said that Azzas, formed from the 2024 merger of Arezzo and Grupo Soma, has seen only a 'small impact' from tariffs so far. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil-based company is focused on accelerating synergies and improving its cash flow as it merges operations. He added that the group is streamlining operations with an eye on return on invested capital and hasn't ruled out deals related to its brands. The company also owns high-income brands including Animale, Maria Filó, Cris Barros and Fábula, among others. Birman also has a brand under his own name that sells shoes costing from $400 to $1,000. Actress Emily Blunt wore the shoes during the 2023 Oscars. Quarterly results Birman said the integration is starting to deliver results, with gains expected as the company streamlines logistics and shipping operations and combines areas such as e-commerce and customer service. Revenue rose sharply in the first quarter compared to a year earlier. Investors are watching closely for signs of progress. Ruben Couto, an analyst at Banco Santander, said in a recent note to clients that the company's negative operational cash flow and high capital expenditures contributed to higher debt last quarter. To counter this and instill financial discipline, employee bonuses are now tied to Azzas' free cash flow, Birman said. Management also plans to lower capital expenditures by 120 million reais ($21 million) next year by reducing spending on technology and opening new stores via franchisees. Birman downplayed a report from Valor Econômico, a Brazilian newspaper, that there's tension with Grupo Soma founder Roberto Jatahy. 'There are points of divergence that generate interesting debates,' Birman said of his relationship with Jatahy. He added that 'everything is governed by a valid agreement, including a 10-year lock-up plan, to uphold its terms.' Last year, the company's major shareholders agreed to a lock-up plan that restricts the sale of their stakes except in specific cases. Birman and Jatahy are major shareholders in the combined entity, and Soma generates about 30% of the revenue. Azzas' Brazil-listed stock has advanced more than 50% so far this year, with much of the jump following the company's first-quarter earnings release last month. Birman added he has a 'deep' relationship with Farm Rio's founders, Katia Barros and Marcello Bastos. Left Party MP expelled from German parliament over Palestine t-shirt
Left Party MP Cansin Köktürk was thrown out of a German parliament plenary chamber on Wednesday for wearing a t-shirt with the word "Palestine" printed on it, a move deemed a political statement by the parliamentary leadership. Bundestag President Julia Klöckner intervened during the session, reminding MPs that political messages on clothing are not permitted in the chamber. "We have agreed and these are the clear rules of the House," Klöckner said, "that neither stickers nor any other form of denomination on T-shirts play a role." She continued, "I have asked Ms. Köktürk to change her sweater - and we did not make that public - but you apparently refuse. I would then ask you to leave the meeting. Please do so." This is not the first time Köktürk has attracted attention in parliament. On her very first day as an MP, she appeared in the Bundestag wearing a scarf resembling a Palestinian keffiyeh, prompting members of the conservative CDU to call for an official ban on such symbols. Köktürk later took to X to respond to the incident, writing: "Germany will continue to supply weapons to Israel. Not a word about over 50,000 dead and injured children. The EU steel sector was on high alert on Wednesday following the implementation of 50% US tariffs on steel and aluminium, a move that might divert global steel imports formerly heading to the US towards the EU. "With the doubling of US blanket tariffs on steel to 50% without exceptions, we expect massive deflection of the 27 million tonnes of steel previously destined for the US towards the European market,' director general of the European Steel Association (EUROFER) Axel Eggert warned in a statement. 'We are being flooded by cheap foreign steel,' he added, 'without swift action, we will not just be underwater — we will drown.' Kerstin Maria Rippel, the chief executive of the German Steel Federation said the 50% tariffs marked 'a new level of escalation' in the EU-US trade conflict. On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order, which the White House shared on X, claiming that the rise of tariffs on steel and aluminium would 'provide greater support' to US industries, and would 'eliminate the national security threat' posed by imported steel and aluminium. Last March, Trump had re-established tariffs on steel and aluminium, which were initially imposed in 2018 and 2020 under his first mandate. The steel sector has already been struggling with Chinese overcapacities flooding the EU market, but since the US imposed tariffs across the globe the bloc is facing overcapacities from multiple countries. Import penetration in the EU is up to 30% in 2025 in a context of depressed demand, Eggert claimed. In Brussels, the pressure has intensified following Trump's increased tariffs at a time when the EU seeks to negotiate a resolution to its trade dispute with the US. 'The 50% tariffs have clearly not helped the negotiations at all,' said one EU diplomat. On Wednesday, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič acknowledged in an X post that the two sides 'are advancing in the right direction at pace', and are 'staying in close contact to maintain the momentum', following his meeting with his US counterpart, Jamieson Greer in Paris on the sidelines of an OECD trade ministerial. But quizzed by journalists later in the day, Šefčovič said he 'strongly' regretted Trump's latest 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium, adding: 'It doesn't help, especially as we are making progress.' A group of EU high-level experts, including Tomás Baert, trade advisor to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has been in Washington since Monday to negotiate the technical details that could help the EU and the US break the deadlock. Besides the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium, the EU is also facing a 25% tariff on cars and a 10% levy on all other imports. The US also has launched several investigations into pharma, semiconductors and aircrafts that could lead to further tariffs. Trump has further threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all EU goods as of 9 July if the negotiations fail to meet his expectations. The US and the EU exchanged proposals two weeks ago, but both sides have dismissed the other's offers. The EU offered a deal of zero-for-zero tariffs on all industrial goods and purchase of strategic products such as US energy, tech and agri-products, whereas the US expected the EU to review some of its regulations.
